We are Ashley & Travis, two sailors hailing from Kemah, TX who just purchased (well a few months ago) a new to us sailboat.
She is a Taiwainese classic--1987 SLOCUM 43. In our videos you will find a pretty raw glimpse into buying a sailboat in a foreign country and all the hoops, joys and crazy things that we come across along the way.
I (Ashley) was born and raised on sailboats since a baby-so to say its a hobby for me is a understatement, it is in my DNA. My dad had an established yacht repair company (Mobile Yacht Services) where I grew up for about 20years. I remember bucket baths and helping sanding and sailing when I was super young...and loving it. Fast forward after owning several of my own sailboats, I am now 40 and FINALLY pursuing my dreams of cruising.
Travis is a "jack of all trades", extremely intelligent & capable man, and one of the only people I have met that I would trust my life at sea with...and to share the adventure! Join us
@@LeahLand-z1k the work is coming along great(ish)! Like all boat projects, a little slower than we’d like! Ha. But we accomplished a lot in a little over 5 weeks. We are about to head off to do a charter job in the Caribbean to make a little money to replenish the kitty! Stay tuned for the next episode which drops this Saturday! ❤️
Yeah. I think 15/20min must be the sweet spot for a lot of channels. Entering Mexico with all of our stuff was…nerve racking but in the end it all ended well. We had lists of every item in the car in both Spanish and English and paid our taxes. It was just such a long drive!
Pretty good show from an iPhone. Looking forward to all the episodes, love the slocum, solid vessel. Where did you find the listing? Being Costa Rico and all- maybe it’s covered in a future episode.
@@SailingPAPILLONso you were checking listing in other countries? How? Looking for my first big boy vessel, currently on a 23’ Merit Sprint- trailer, day sailor
@@MrFormeypi mostly FB market place, yachtworld (tried to avoid due to us wanting to purchase directly from an owner), most major sailboats listings online, even Craigslist. We looked in all places. FB is actually where we ended up finding her. Biggest thing is to get aboard lots of different types of sailboats and if you can charter them, do it! We had no idea we’d like a Slocum until we got aboard and spent a few nights before purchase (one major plus on going directly thru an owner to purchase is the entire approach to purchasing can be done with you and their comfort levels).
Check out Aldino on Sailing Magic Carpet, very gifted boat maker who refit his boat with external chain plates and he also has a beautiful rub rail that he to cut- turned out perfect.
Check out the Duracell Project for chain plates. I know others have also done it, but they're the ones I recall first. Magic Carpet I believe did it too.
Ahh yep. I’ve been following them both for a bit! Lol We are going a little crazy with hull grinding, chainplate grinding/polishing and teak work all in a day, every day. But everyday we get a LITTLE bit closer!!
@@louismartinez4467 LOL…that car door panel was taken off to fix a door handle that broke. Also taken to the same metal shop! Unfortunately they didn’t have the right welding tool…someone else may tho, fingers crossed 🤞
@@LeahLand-z1k it is coming from moisture seeping through and around where the old chainplate used to be! Caused a lot of damage over the years. Thank you so much for taking time to commentb
@@mvweebles3483 since no one was hurt it was very simple. Both parties called their insurance agents, an adjuster was sent out for both and it was decided then and there what was fault etc. Easiest process I’ve ever dealt with.
@@danratsnapnames thank you!! We are stoked to be getting some projects done and moving forward even tho it’s like the surface of the sun here in Mexico lol We will be back in Texas in a few weeks!
@@travistucker7317 we would have loved to but we have our chainplates removed and the rigging secured well…would have loved to be able to use the mast tho!! 👍
@@travistucker7317 yeah! We got it done though, and making progress on the major jobs! Side note…Mexico does NOT sell Acetone. Something we learned today whilst driving to every place imaginable to find it!
@@travistucker7317 we thought @that! They only have tiny bottles from what we’ve found thus far and we need a gallon plus! Lol 😝 Comedy of errors! I think we will use alcohol in the end. There is one more spot we will inquire with today tho!
We will be hauling out for the first time this year! Super nervous but it needs to be done, wished we were further south, Chiapas looks more refreshing than the desert haul outs here in northern Baja 😂
@@sailingtengai it’s a pretty popular spot for most! The marina is nice and the prices for being on the card are great. It’s great to get a good look at the bottom and do maintenance. We are currently driving down to the boat now from TX…will be there in 3hrs!! ❤️❤️🙏🦋
Yep!! We are about to grind her down to bare fiberglass this month and put on some nice new antifoul. Likely so sparse by the waterline because the diver cleaned it well there is my guess
Hey everyone! Thank you guys for watching...it means a lot to us as we are trying hard to grow the channel & learn! Please let us know if there are certain things you all like or dislike! <3 Cheers!
@@SailingPAPILLON looks great so far. I personally love doing teak. I did find that Cetal on the bulwarks held up better in the tropics though. But topsides, nothing looks better than what you're doing.
