I got the same thing on my figured maple bown I just started. Roughing gouge, bowl gouge, finishing scraper. 3 different shaving styles. Nice looking bowl, I like the contoured rim.
I'm going to offer it locally this week at my Open Studio exhibit as it's made from local wood - if I don't have any takers, I'll happily reach out! If you're in the Bay Area in CA, DM me and I can set it aside, if you like
I LOVE your channel, I love how organized, your vids are. Nice work. I really wished I saw this when I was starting out in March. I ended up getting the new Rockler 12-24 and I love it, i got a cheap bandsaw off is marketplace, just to get me started (RoyobI 9in for $50) and 3 really nice carbide tools from Rockler, I also have some cheap ones from Amazon, but rarely use them. I have a dust collection system (since my partner has one already) and the nova chuck, I also got a vacuum chamber and pressure pot for resin work. (I have a lot of free punky wood). Next purchase of a bench grinder and jig system and decent hss tools and another chuck for bowl jaws, (I hate changing chucks) Also wouldnt mind a bigger lathe… but for now until I get the final setup will I upgrade that… maybe in a few years. I have spent many hours on it so far and am loving it. I fall between the 2.5 and a 3 since I blew a lot of money on a resin set up. Thanks again for this, this video is really amazing.
Thanks so much for watching! It sounds like you're off to a great start. Once you start to get the hang of HSS you're going to really be off to the races. Can't wait to see what you do with your gear!
Yeah sorry I don’t agree.. your opinion is junk.. I have turned bowls for 55 years..I have Cole jaws that are 30 inches but never think like you on finish ever.. I have made over 1100 bowls over the years and no complaints.. All were given away too!
If you've never sold them, then you don't really know what works, do you? 55 years without testing your take on finishing is absolutely wild. I'll give you credit for longevity, but I'd encourage you to examine your craft a little more carefully.
You have no idea dude.. some of my turnings were recently sold at estate auction.. Folks I gave bowls to for 1300 and 1400$.. Most of my turning have recessed dove tails on the bottom and many do not..
😂😂@@terrytenley9327 alright man, show me your spot in the journals and I'll believe you. I didn't see any bowls with this method at AAW, the Smithsonian, or the Museum for Art in Wood, and I think that speaks volumes. Unless your bowls are huge and expensive because of size, I just don't believe your random dumpy bottom heavy bowls sell for thousands at "estate auctions."
I always liked the bottom of the bowl to be flat as described in the first part of the video. The trick to doing this is to make sure the bottom is a little concaved towards the center to ensure the outer edge of the base is the only thing in contact with the table top. Otherwise, as the wood moves in the center, there will always be some part of the base that does not contact a flat surface and the bowl will rock slightly.
In the other video, you mention that you need to turn a "tall" chuck on these and lose wood. Is there any reason why you couldn't glue on a sacrificial chunk of wood, turn the tenon on that, and then just remove it at the end? while on screw-chuck, turn the other side flat, then glue on a sacrificial block, then remount and turn the tenon wood glue, full 24 hour cure - it should be strong enough
That was a great video - very focused on the task at hand, quick-paced, and a nice comparison at the end - thank you (liked and subscribed) What lathe is that? I see Laguna. 15/24 or 18/36 ?
I’m a new turner and I also just bought a Rose Engine Lathe (simple unbranded aluminum and steel but very capable) and am learning. Thanks for your inspiration.
You would be a good replacement for that Mike Peace guy. Please stay with traditional tools. Carbide tools is like using a MIG welder. Everyone thinks they are a Pro after using one for just a week or two.
Carbides have their place. All tools can be used together. Lovely little box Brad & a really cool camera view on this video. Really nice to watch👍🏴
