I'm just a busy guy that gets involved in bunch of different shenanigan's. I am not an expert in anything and I enjoy learning new things. If I think it's interesting I'll try to make an entertaining video to share. You will see videos about automotive, home projects, tractors, travel, GMRS Radio, CB Radio, guns, welding projects and e-bikes. Who knows what else might be happening. You will also find "shorts" of all types. Maybe someday I'll find one subject but for right now this channel is just a great American variety show.
its going to be a LOOOOONG time before GMRS replaces CB on the road. IF you want to keep in touch with truckers and a few other people you definitely need a CB. If you are traveling in a group of cars that is where you need GMRS.
Hey Paul, another great video, I just grabbed one and in less than 24 hours recieved my gmrs permisson slip. Still trying to figure out things, especially the repeater stuff. I'm in 02780 and I see on the web there are lots of repeaters, just trying to figure out. Thanks for all the vids......
As an OTR driver I do not know of anyone that uses FM on a C.B in the US. Its AM and only when there is a back-up r, with the squealch up, just enough range that someone can tell you a tire is going flat or the strap-downs need tightening.. Too much proselytizing and complaining about... well... everything. Satellite radio ended banter on 19, for the most part.
I recently got my callsign and a TIDRadio H3, should be here (Amazon) today around 1800. cannot wait test it out and am glad I purchased it for mainly emergency comms. I plan on buying more and am prepping as we speak for the chinese and T ists to come and mess up my day, (thanks uncle joe)
Is this a 12, or 18k MrCool DIY? I have a 18 and also a 24k. Wish they’d make these things disassemble much easier. Seems like the blower wheel of the 18k unit I have which is in a bedroom gets way more junked up than the 24k unit that I have in my garage workshop where I grind carbon fiber constantly. The shop unit is mounted a foot higher than the 18k unit though.
The numbers 0-5 on top of the screen is for the transmission power in watts. Push the transmit button and look *really carefully* and you can see a faint thin red bar under the numbers. It should go up to 5 when TX Power (menu item #2) is set to High, and up to 2 or so when TX power is set to low.
Another feature: menu item #3 is a power save option when monitoring . The setting 1:3 means the radio listens for 1 second and then sleeps for 3. The max is 1:8, so you may not hear the first 8 seconds of a transmission (!). I have mine turned off (always listen, never sleep) and seem to get great battery life, so I'm not convinced how useful this feature may be.
I heard an anecdote on Reddit that someone tried doing a radio check multiple times and got no response whatsoever...but as soon as they said "Trump is not my president" the CB lit up with folks wanting to let him know his mic was working. :D
I recently did a trip going up to Cleveland, Ohio on I-71 North and back down to southeastern Ohio and was surprisingly able to get quite a few contacts on channel 19. We made roughly 7 contacts, most of them being radio checks. The rest were very immature and stupid chatter sessions but honestly very fun. We even passed one of the people we made contact with and waved at them. When we were in the Cleveland area, there was a great amount of radio chatter on channel 19. Mostly unintelligible, and most likely skip, but still very incredible and I've never heard that much chatter on the radio before. Very great video, I'm happy to see others trying to make contacts on CB. 73!
umm that 1/4 wave doesnt lose power, its 0Db.. that 5/8 is 4 or 5 DB and it does have a ground plane as the magnet mount IS the ground plane!! and no im not radio police, you just have alot to learn
@@paulethier3416 we all started somewhere.. 50 years ago for me!! Ground plane is VERY important.. What was the issue with the NMO base mount kit antenna with the 4 ground radials??
I'm going to try smaller/cheaper ups battery backup to 12v 20amp switch. I have a huge generator. So this should work for cool down untill I switch over to it.
Just starting out with GMRS in Manchester NH. Have 3 tidradio TD-H3 1 HAM 2 GMRS. Need to see if my landlord will allow a base antenna. I did think of using a mobile antenna in my apartment as well.
Good song! I’m saving my pennies for one of these. I had a Wrangler but I gave it to my mom. I dig the adjustable sights and 22 mag cylinder on this one. Thanks for the video!
@@paulethier3416 Yes, national VHF calling freq. I call out all the time, occasionally get an answer but usually not someone on the road. Local repeaters have action but you have to program them in along your route.
I don’t think it matters. They are advertising different radios but all the ones that I know about except all programming and there are videos on RU-vid that show you how to unlock the radio. It’s pretty simple but none of my friends had to do that and neither did I.
Nice review! Another nice feature: the LED's on top will "breath", that is illuminate briefly every few seconds. I dropped my radio in tall grass during a fire department exercise. When I realized it was gone I was able to quickly locate it even though it was getting pretty dark. You can adjust or turn this feature off in the menu.
OK, sweet mine was doing that and I wondered what that was. I didn’t see it in the owners manual but I didn’t really read the owners manual that detailed so this is great thanks.
GMRS/FRS is used more as a travel group service meaning a convoy of campers to stay in touch. You won't even hear anyone on GMRS Emergency so if you have an emergency be sure to have a cellphone. GMRS/FRS is also more used in Campgrounds, at resorts, at amusement parks, at the lake and by off road groups and bigfoot hunters. The CB is still king of the interstate.
