Thank you, LWV, for conducting this debate. The folks in favor of this initiative were well-spoken, and tended to answer questions well, while Laurie--the one representing the "against" side--started out looking angry, and continued to get even more angry as the debate continued, while seeming to ignore many questions, and, instead, use them as an opportunity to just repeat what a terrible idea the initiative is. Ultimately, I still am voting against this, as I'd like to see more community debate about ways to solve these problems before raising property taxes when rents and mortgages in Whatcom County are already absolutely ridiculous (thanks, COVID!). We DO need to do more to make sure there is adequate childcare available, and we are taking better care of the children in our community... but we seem to have a lot of well-intentioned ballot initiatives around here that seem to have been lacking in thorough analysis, and/or community involvement during the crafting process, and I fear this may be one of them.
