Hey! Do you have any advice for someone who has primarily done digital art and struggles with more traditional mediums like paint? My skills really shine in my digital work and I’m worried I may not be able to show them what I can do traditionally, but I really want to. Help? 😭
Hi!!! May I ask what major you are going for? Painting isn’t important unless you’re fine art or illustration. The first year of Ringling you mainly do charcoal or pencil drawings when it comes to traditional mediums
Awesome! I wouldn’t prioritize learning a new medium for your portfolio. Knowing your fundamentals of art is way more important, as well as anatomy! I would connect to an admissions counselor for more up to date information for your portfolio !
@@dracanthrope110 thanks so much!! I toured recently and they said the portfolio should be at least half traditional and observational, that’s why I ask. I’ll try and connect with a counselor :)
Your portfolio is awesome :D and congrats on getting into CA!! I’m a sophomore in HS rn and ringling has been my goal school since like the 5th grade 😭 I was wondering what grade you were In when you made most of these pieces? I’m not sure if I should be trying to build out a portfolio now or if I’m late to start 😅Also I’m looking to get into digital art and wondering what tablet/program you used. Whatever I have to do I’m just really committed and want to be In animation so badly! Thank you and congrats again :-))
Start as soon as possible! Most pieces were made the summer prior to applying to Ringling. I started using a surface pro and Autodesk sketchbook, but now I use procreate on an iPad and I highly recommend it! Draw everyday, study from life, look at artists that inspire you and learn from them, and have fun!! 💙
Just curious since I didn't see any 3D in the portfolio; how much of each skill would I have to show? Would they want me to focus on the major (ex. character design, 3D, 2D) or do they want a general scope of skills?
You do not need any 3D experience! When I applied, they mainly cared about my drawing skills and the foundations. I would contact an advisor in case the criteria had changed :)
i watched this hoping it would help me.. it has helped me realize i probably will not get accepted into the computer animation program so i dont even think i want to try anymore😭😭😭😭
@@dracanthrope110 And is there a specific app which you use to build it? And how long before did you start preparing it? Sorry for the questions im just too nervous about this i feel like im going to cry
@@luramumu I used google drive to organize all of my pieces, however each program has a different way of submission. I start working on my portfolio a year in advance, however the oldest piece I believe is only a few months. It’s no problem! 💙
wow these are so cool! congrats again! how did you get references for the figures? did you go to a live model class or if online, where’d you get them?
Hello! First off- congratulations!! Your work is amazing and getting scholarships let alone getting accepted to all of these schools is no easy feat! very happy for you!! If its okay to ask, how probable is it for a foreign student to get into ringling? I live around in southeast asian and ringling has always been my dream school, but unfortunately i think my location is whats stopping me :(
I used my good drive to organize my portfolio before submitting, and I am unaware of how submitting portilfios is like this year. I would make sure to review the portilfio page(s) and read through common app.
congratulations- ur work is amazing!! <3 i was just wondering why do u prefer ringling over scad? bc im about to apply to both scad and ringling for illustration in the next few weeks. also i havent really looked into sva all that much, but how does it compare with ringling and scad?
1.) I felt Ringling was best fitting for me. I loved the campus, area, community, and how they treated their students. To not spread misinformation, I also didn't hear great things about SCAD from students and other sources.
SVA is similar to both with another amazing animation program. If you're thinking illustration, I would look at the art school in Rhode Island! SVA is great too though ;)
I’m going into highschool as a freshman this fall. I’ve been trying to figure out what college I wanna apply to once I’m in Junior year (I honestly don’t know if that’s the time you apply). I highly doubt I can get into this college or this program, but I’ll have better chances if I have practice with the things they’re looking for. ✨Time to work on values and hands/feet more✨
YOU CAN IMPROVE SO MUCH IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS!!!!! You apply senior year ;) and as long as you put in the time and effort you got this!! While looking at colleges take in the location, background of the school, interview students currently going, and cost.
i got accepted too with the same exact scholarship for CA!! are you in the groupme? I’d Love to get to know you more!! i hope this didnt come off as creepy
I love this!! Thank you for the useful info, I don’t know anything about dog behaviour so this was great. I also loved the illustrations, they worked really nicely with the audio!
Sorry if this is a silly question but how do you make sure you get accepted into the animation program? I'm worried about being recommended to the wrong major but does that only happen if you apply for the wrong major accidentally and if you apply late and the animation majors are full? The second thing would be how digital work is looked upon, such as if I did digital figure drawings and environments.
Keep in mind the animation program has a deadline for its applicants. You must apply by January 15th, the early application I believe was November 1st (which is when I applied, and got my acceptance in December). They will let you know if you were accepted into the computer animation major or not (yes, you can be denied). You are allowed to apply for another major. It is possible for the spots for the program to be taken up, so don’t apply last minute. Digital art is fine, but when talking to admissions and the head of CA they HIGHLY recommend it is kept at a minimum. I too recommend figure drawings are done traditionally.
@@dracanthrope110 I see, and are the 2d &3d animation treated as different majors or different specializations, that if you generally don't get into animation you don't get into either 3d or 2d animation?
@@apple-og6ec there is not an option between the 2 at Ringling, but there is a SVA. I’m assuming you’re regarding Ringling, which focuses primary on 3D and only teaches 2D at a minimum.
Hello! first off, congratulations! your portfolio is really amazing, I especially loved the last piece with the hands :). If I may ask, what was your application transcript like grade-wise? I'm not too good in school, and would like to know if it makes a huge impact on acceptance. Thank you so much!
Thank you!! I had a 4.5 weighted gpa overall, which is basically all A’s with maybe 1 or 2 B’s. I wouldn’t say grades make a huge impact, they mainly look at your portfolio. Grades just show how you are as a student, so it does play a part in their decision, but if your artistic talent and passion are noticeable then you should be good!! Always talk to an admissions counselor though ;)
Hiiiii, I am working on my portfolio to apply to Ringling for Fall 2023 and your videos have motivated me a lot (p≧w≦q) do you mind if I dr you on ig to ask more about the portfolio?
I started working on my portfolio a year in advance to submitting it-- You need 10-20 (at least that was my requirement). Don’t feel pressured to submit as many pieces as possible, your portfolio is only as strong as your weakest piece. Having 10 really good pieces is all you need!
Hiiii im actually loving ur work. One of my biggest dreams is to get into ringling. But im actually really nervous but really excited too, i have been working in my portfolio about a month ago and i'm really enjoying the process, can i ask u a question? Are u using photos of references for these anatomy drawing or is it just direct observation?
That’s awesome!! The anatomy studies are a mixture of both direct observation (real life) and photos on the internet. I highly recommend doing people studies irl.
Do you have any tips for where to start? I’m in 11th grade going onto 12th grade. And I want to have a very good chance to get accepting into computer animation. Any help will be very useful to me. And I’m also looking for scholarships too. I will be graduating in 2023 ☺️
Start working on your portfolio IMMEDIATELY!!! Practice everyday! Focus on observational drawings (people, places, animals, objects, hands/feet), your portfolio should be 70% ish of this. Figure drawings are VERY important especially for CA. As for scholarships, I use bold.org and fastweb the most, those are good starters! :3
@@Pastelvanillaa after talking to admission counselors and the head of CA, they recommend doing observational work (mainly figure drawings) traditionally. Personally I recommend having some sort of variety to your portfolio to show a range in skills (I had charcoal, ink, digital, and acrylic). For illustrations and character work those can be digital, and from my portfolio I did still life’s digitally- but I still had a nice blend of the two. If you want, go ahead and make a quick portfolio of your best work and send it to an admissions counselor, they’ll be able to guide you better.
Hey! Congratulation! I finished my application today in hope to get into Illustration for fall 2022... Can you remember how long it took you to get the answer? I'm so stressed lol
Hello, i wanted to study 3D animation but I received a letter today saying I was accepted to Fine art major fall 2022. Does your letter specifically indicating you are accepted to computer animation major? I thought I made mistake clicked on fine art on common app.
Y’all I can’t Spotify has an ad for this now And when it comes on I think it’s playing in my playlist and I get so mad that it’s just the stupid ad Why would you do this to me
Well, start practicing! If it’s in relevance to this video, start drawing sketching everyday! Especially figure drawings. Draw from life- still objects, moving people, feet/hands, and environments! And don’t forget to show who you are as an artist :)
