The title references a nickname given to a piece of classical music. Which piece is it?

"Moon River" Lyrics by Johnny Mercer Moon river, wider than a mile, I'm crossing you in style someday. Oh, dream maker, you heartbreaker, Wherever you're going, I'm going your way. Two drifters off to see the world, There's such a lot of world to see. We're after the same rainbow's end, Waiting 'round the bend, My huckleberry friend, Moon river and me.

English: The lotus-flower fears The sun’s splendour, And with bowed head, Dreaming, awaits the night. The moon is her lover, And wakes her with his light, And to him she tenderly unveils Her innocent flower-like face. She blooms and glows and gleams, And gazes silently aloft- Fragrant and weeping and trembling With love and the pain of love. Source in video description.

To sit together on the bank of a flowing stream, To watch it flow; Together, if a cloud glides by, To watch it glide; On the horizon, if smoke rises from thatch, To watch it rise; If nearby a flower smells sweet, To savour its sweetness; To listen at the foot of the willow, where water murmurs, To the murmuring water; Not to feel, while this dream passes, The passing of time; But feeling no deep passion, Except to adore each other, With no cares for the quarrels of the world, To know nothing of them; And alone together, seeing all that tires, Not to tire of each other, To feel that love, in the face of all that passes, Shall never pass! Absolutely amazing! I wish I can improvise this well too! Although I'm a bit confused in what way is this "Italian style"?

Hi, so glad you enjoyed! Great question! The title is a little bit of a misnomer as it's more of a reference to the film's title. However, there are some elements which at least suggested an Italian style to me when I was listening to the original song and improvising off of it. The original song is in a 6/8 or 12/8 rhythm, which resembles, at least in feeling, the Baroque form of a Siciliana. A Baroque Siciliana was generally a slow, minor mode piece in 6/8 or 12/8 which lilting rhythms. As the film was set in Sicily, I originally thought this explanation fit quite well. However, there are characteristic rhythms to a Siciliana, which I felt neither the original nor my piece fulfilled. Other elements that reminded me of the Italian style was the use of the lament bass figuration, which was prominently used in some Italian art songs in the Baroque. In most Italian music (broad generalization), the texture is also homophonic, meaning it's one voice supported by accompaniment. While I improvised, I tried to mimic the basic structure of an Italian art song, with an introduction, verses, interludes, and a postlude. Although there were some elements which suggested an Italian style to me, the short version is I just wanted to find something that resembled the title of the original film. That's the long and short of it. Thanks for asking the question! Glad you enjoyed it.

Italian: Amarilli, mia bella, Non credi, o del mio cor dolce desio, D'esser tu l'amor mio? Credilo pur: e se timor t'assale, Dubitar non ti vale. Italian: O mio babbino caro, mi piace è bello, bello; vo'andare in Porta Rossa a comperar l'anello! Sì, sì, ci voglio andare! e se l'amassi indarno, andrei sul Ponte Vecchio, ma per buttarmi in Arno! My dear Agnes, Can it be you- The angel there, To guide him through? My dear Agnes, How much is true? He writes my name, But claims it’s you. Dear, dear Agnes, how you shine! Burning the way for them to see. Papa, Trotwood, what is mine? Why does the light not fall on me? My dear Agnes, Bound by my home, I live a life, But not my own! Please dear Agnes, Help me to see. Your light burns bright, Except for me. And was that man the boy you shield? Was he Trotwood, your brother- Maybe Daisy-another? Or was he David Copperfield? Burning away that they might see. Agnes Wickfield, can you be me?

This improvisation has all the earmarks of an Andrew Wright one. Either it is or, someone is doing a good job of imitating him! Whichever in truth it might prove, it is awfully good and affecting.

Here is a copy of the poem. Shades of Autumn Shades of autumn bless the moment, A kiss passed through nature's veil. A journey to nostalgia... A story which is told in Braille. Think of a picture in flame and amber, A reprint of currier and Ives. Time to reflect was in September. Now, seconds speed by... another leaf dies. Shades of Autumn hold the moment A picture colored in rhyme, The partner of a rainbow, A painting completed by time. As the moments pass on the tones turn grey, Galloping darkness races the breeze, November's chill stills the memory. Blow a kiss to the past/ it's time for tomorrow --- was there ever a time so grand - The seasons past had their many pleasures, Perhaps, the happiest times of all. Yet, nothing can surpass the splendor Of the days that come midway in the fall. (This stanza goes overtop the second "Think of a picture....") Blow a kiss to the past/ it's time for tomorrow --- was there ever a time so grand - Shades of Autumn pass with sorrow, The age of winter is at hand. Shades of Autumn bless the moment A galaxy to caress the flight... Words by Bernie Cohen
