My cousin was a saddle maker. I spent a summer as a boy (70 now) runnin hides through the lye in a big trammel. He used the rawhide to cover saddle trees made of Sugar Pine and make string. I got to stichem too. Can't say that I miss that slimy stinkin damn stuff. :)
