Hi, my name is Adrian, and I love playing creative tycoon builder games without getting too stressed about being 'perfect' but always doing my best to understand how they work. So, I have lots of "Lets Plays" for you with a sprinkling of Tutorials and some First Looks at games I think I, or you, might enjoy.
I'm also a great fan of theatre, real ale and 'old' music that I remember from my youth - check out my playlists for some of my favourites.
You can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and various Discord servers (where my ID is just 'Ajax'). I also have a (sort of) personal Blog. I also used to hang out on Tumblr and the Sims forums but don't visit those places much these days. :(
If you use any of those 'socials', use the links below and say "hi".

lol hilarious historical discussion on new Orleans. mostly correct, but the language morphed into Cajun which I understand to be a sort of "dirtier" version of French (not in a bad way). the local pronunciation I've always heard is closer to "naw-linz" but sometimes a little bit of "r" - naaah'r-linz. lots of fun ways to pronounce it really :)
Thank you. 😊 I must admit to enjoying adding some extra context to my videos, especially when I know half (or less) of the whole story! 😂 I also found this little article which pretty much lines up with your pronunciation, though I think I'll keep to my 'French' variation for this series. 😎 www.thesouthernthing.com/2014/07/how-to-correctly-pronounce-new-orleans.html
Hi, as far as I'm aware there are no real social interaction features in the game. The dev described it so: "There's no concept of romance, everyone just has opinions of each other and if opinion is high enough between two people with the right organs they can make a baby" I can't find it but I recall some discussion about adding more "social" features but that was said to be currently beyond the scope of the game mechanics. So, yeah, just the opinion value and then being housemates and then becoming parents.
This game ticks a lot of boxes for me. But I just can't reconcile a brand new starting company with tens of millions in the bank. I feel the game would have a better flow if the player started a fraction of the size and built up more slowly. It's just a little too arcadey at present.
Hi, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. 😊 It could have been interesting, as some other "dev tycoon" type games do, to start in a garage with a few thousand and build from there. Though, as the focus of this game is immediately grander, you start as not just designer but also manufacturer, distributer and marketer, rather than sub-contracting those jobs out, that huge pot of venture capital is kind of necessary. I guess that design choice was what the dev felt was consistent with the 'grand strategy' concept of the game.
Thank you. 😊 Honestly, I was annoyed that I'd picked a different shade, but you might be right, a variation could look more interesting. I shall try that in my next freeplay episode. Cheers. 👍
Yeah, I would suggest that I'm better at spotting 'issues' when I'm not recording which kind of splits my attention to details but I'm not sure that's entirely true. 🤔😂 And, of course, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. 😊
Enjoyed the episode. It was nice to see some boats in the test. I had forgotten about them. It was a close test for all of us, each using different methods.
Thank you. 😊 As I was already using boats for that factory and as I wasn't happy with those truck routes in St Albans I, perhaps recklessly, ignored that option. Yes, once again, a wonderful variety of solutions.
Thank you, yes, I was very lucky with the trains on that run, they made it look nicely busy. Must admit, I often seem to spend more time trying to decide what music to use for a soundtrack than I do editing the video! Really happy to hear that you liked it.
Having a lot of updates is nice knowing the dev is working on the game, which is a big reason I bought it, but the downside is, I tend to want to restart, on a new update or just wait for things to slow down. As such, I have not played at all since your last episode. I keep up with the updates on discord, and keep them in mind for, when I see where the game ends up. I also don't want to burn out before it is done either. Usually for the Gym I just tell them to do everything at the same priority. That way when the guy wants to work out he can spread out the negative effects, if you do that it is rare that you will get injured, but really I don't worry much until I get up to 25% or more, before I a lower any priories. Generally, your guy will consider how, high that negative stat is, and choose one of the other workouts instead. None of the negatives are too bad if they lead to a status, you will want to stop them from doing that activity, and maybe get treatment in the hospital but for the most part it's not horrible to have one negative status appear, they only last 2 or 3 months in most cases. I would have taken to bonus and quit that old job. Anything over 160 hours is going to risk burning you out unless you really love to work. But if you are keeping the job always take the pay raise, it pays out more money than a bonus in about 8 months, if I remember right, also odds are next year you get offered a new higher raise. Every year your skills get better, so you more than recover any negatives to work performance, and it will go above 100%. There is no reason to schmooze your boss unless that was literally the only option. The job list defaults to the ordering jobs your person would most like. I usually look at the best, most interesting one there for a future job, and then choose a good path to get there. Like Real Estate Agent was the best, followed by Lead Developer and Chief Technology Officer. Then after I pick a future job, I look for what I am actually qualified to do that gives the right XP for that later job. I am sure the Software Tester will be a great start to go down the Lead Developer route, but there is little thinking needed to look at the list and see what they game says your character would like to do.
Hi, thanks again for watching and offering such useful insights. Yeah, setting a mixed routine at the gym is a very sound idea and perhaps (read: definitely!) I get too worried about the slightest negative impact. I should maybe chill a little and let him take the knocks. :) I have a feeling I've said this before, but I will try to remember your advice on the job review and go for a raise ... or bonus and run! Interesting point about the job list, I hadn't noticed that (but I often miss a lot of details when recording!) It would make sense for the game to offer the most likely to be suitable jobs first.
For what it's worth, I name you as the winner here, too! :)) Thank you so much for the series again! I love watching your episodes and it also helps with the development. In the new version, you won't have issues with finding a new manager haha! :D (as far as I remember I've changed that already). Please do not start a series with the version that you can find in the Discord branch - it is not ready for that. But I will release a new version into the open beta public branch in 1-2 weeks, that will be a proper candidate for that. You are the best!
Thank you, you are too kind. 😊 I've only had a quick look at the Discord beta so far, looks to be that much more challenging and I need to get my head around the new logistics/marketing systems. So, yes, I will certainly wait for the public version before I start playing it seriously.
You are right, and I may well do that as I develop this area. Though if we get faster and more powerful lorries before then I may stay with road routes. 🤔
This looks interesting but I wonder if it needs something more to increase longevity. I did play a demo of a game kind of like this but it was co-op and while it said you could play solo, it was rather chaotic because it was balanced for a team of people working. But it seemed to have more interesting systems for making beer, and cooking, but those systems are what made it to where you needed more players.
I'm only at the very start so far, but I understand there is quite a lot more to the game, including various interactions and quests for the world beyond the tavern. Yeah, I've seen a number of other pub/brewery sims that include more of the 'cooking' simulation (though this does also include a fair amount of kitchen work) but passed on them as I'm not really a fan of "simulators", I much prefer "managers".
@@AjaxpostPlays I think I may agree with you on the managers being better, at least for this kind of game, though it is hard to find a good manager where you don't end up just watching a well oiled machine, with little input or control. Like Tavern Master is a pretty solid one but once you start the day you are pretty much just watching. I do sometimes like a casual simulator, like the Farming Simulator games, where it is open enough for you to do what you want, at a slow casual pace, you can even knock the clock down to real time speed so you literally have all day. If i am doing the work in a game, I don't like feeling swamped nor hurried.
@@colmortimer1066 I _think_ Tavern Master may have been the dev's first project and is pretty good for what it sets out to do but does have limited replay value. I understand he might be adding another update to it sometime soonish as well as releasing his new game, Blacksmith Master(?) which builds on what he learnt on the Tavern project.
Why do you have only 2k subs? U have such a great communication and content, if you allow me to express my youtube experience owing some channels i recommend you to create a “brand image” (profile pic/ banner / tubnails style) define a color and shapes pattern to your channel visual image, even though you have a great content your branding looks very amateur, you have over 1k videos you should have like 50k subs at least!!!
Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment and for the kind words. 😊 Though, actually, closer to 3,000 subs. 😎 To be honest I am, and intend to stay, an "amateur" RU-vidr, and although I use a number of common 'brand' elements I know that I am not an artist or designer by any stretch of the imagination. Considering that this is never going to be a 'job' in any sense I'm OK with that. Likewise, I'm not sure what I would do with 50,000 subscribers ... for one thing it could mean having to pay extra tax and I really don't want that faff! 😂
I don't think food gets wasted. They seem to cook 2 meals but you eat like 1/3 or 1/4 of a meal at a time. The rest is saved for next meal. Think of it as time spent cooking for each set of meals. You spend 30 hours cooking and this gives you about a week worth of meals. I think the cooking time is a little long, but it seems to work in the game okay. With the performance review I would only do the lowest option, that is unlocked. I never had to Schmooze the boss. If you go to your job everyday, you are going to qualify for the bonus, and taking the slight hit to take a bonus you should make that up and qualify for a raise next time. The only exception is when you are about the change a job, or a few times I kept a job an extra month or two to get to the performance review, just to take the bonus then quit right away. If you are not going to stick around the bonus is likely to be better than a raise. I would have chose all 4 Overconfidence, Endorphin rush, Energetic and Inspired on your birthday, they are all great buffs and the Energy + of Endorphin rush and Energetic Stack. This works out to your energy bar decaying at half the normal rate, so you sleep about half the amount of time for a year. Which gives you more time to work out and recover the health cost you spent, and get your fun bar maxed which will recover your spent happiness points. Why not just give in and buy a year long Gym membership? 8 Months of gym membership costs the same as the 1 year. And 400 euro is not that much to not have to worry about it for 12 months. I think you ended up buying 8 months in this episode, or at least close to it. :)
I did see food expiring several times, which I assume is 'waste'. First time I saw the performance review I assumed I would get a pay raise, but it looks like it's only a bonus first time round at least ... which is nice but both would be better. 😉 My 'cautious' self coming out here ... always leave something in reserve, like 'Happiness' and don't spend on things you might not use. You're right, if I plan to make gym visits a regular thing, the annual pass would make a lot of sense - the monthly thing was mostly the 'real' me thinking! 😂
@@AjaxpostPlays I guess I could be wrong on the food, but I was thinking they ate it. It seemed most the time I got any message about it was right after someone ate. but there have been a lot of changes too. I'll have to monitor it closely. I think you can get a raise your first performance review, you just need a lot of skill, and probably a full time job. So it is hard to get your first job. You can really see the skill effects when you own your own business. Unskilled employees do .85 hours of work for every needed for a job in 1 game hour, while a very skilled worker can do 1.25 hours of work in an hour. As far as being cautious that makes sense. I just think those buffs are really powerful. There are times it would be nice if I had a little more happiness when I get a good option to change likes. I did have one birthday where I could raise a like I wanted but lower one I wanted to keep, yet another option raised that one I was losing, and lowered something I did not mind lowering. I was able to take both, which canceled out the change. It was like 1 option raised my outdoors from like to love, and the other lowered it from like to dislike, taking both kept it at like. To be honest, I had no idea what it was going to do at the time. :)
Yeiy, im happy you still playing this! And 30 min feels really quick! You make me laugh when you cant find the movie button, we know we had been there, looking for something right in front of our eyes 😂
Thank you. 😊 I really enjoy this stage with a new game where I'm discovering fun new features every time I play it. And, yeah, that not seeing what is right in front of me ... happens ALL the time!! 🤣
When building bridges using > for height, I tend to stick with 3 > and 4 shift+>. This almost always gives me the clearance I need without excessive height. Really enjoying the series. 👍
Thank you, we're all enjoying sharing this map and it's great to know that our viewers are too. 😊 Yes, I don't often say it in the commentary but I do also use the Shift up/down for fine tuning my bridges and, starting from level ground, 3 or 4 presses does sound about right. As you may have noticed I have also enabled the adjustable height/depth option which can make lower bridges and, especially, shallower tunnels easier to achieve. 😎
Thank you. 😊 The trouble with 'early game' is that there are so many routes you want to create but just can't get them all done in one video ... and now I have to wait for the other guys!! 🙄
Why does the guests say "bad service" all the time, even when I trained the receptionist both with service 1 and guest happiness 1 and he is at good energy level?
Hi, it has been a while since I last played, and I've not properly investigated the latest updates so I don't know if there is something else going on but ... Are you sure it's the receptionist that is being marked for "Bad Service"? I wonder if the new cleanliness and maintenance systems might be causing some issues? The only time I recall seeing "Bad Service" for my receptionists was when a level 1 staff member was serving a level 2 guest. If you can't find the answer I do recommend going to the Steam Forum or, better still, the Discord server, there are plenty of people there more familiar with current game than I am. Good luck!
Thank you. 😊 As a participant it has indeed been really interesting watching the others and picking up how we can do things a little differently, or better, to enhance our enjoyment of the game.
Thank you. 😊 I reckon it would have been much better to have started the stone train earlier. Though I'm not sure exactly how much the valuation figure is based on profitability rather than just the value of infrastructure and vehicles. 🤔
Thank you. 😊 In fact, considering how well our routes are doing I wonder if we could have actually kept the game running during a lot of the building work. 🤔
Yeah, I did think that great lengths of tunnel might not be appreciated by passengers. But when you know there are many real world tunnels over 50km long maybe all that's needed is a well stocked buffet car to keep everyone happy! 😂
Thank you, everyone had done such a great job making profitable routes it seemed rude to not take advantage of that income. 😉 In fact, one thing I hadn't realised until the end of your video was that pretty much ALL our routes are 'hitting the blue'! Awesome work us, eh. 👏👏
Interesting start... I saw what you did there LOL. Nice idea actually! And yes - the weeding!!! I did not notice that until you pointed it out! I thought our new "flavour" mod and ballast made that task redundant! Dammit! Great effort! But not too sure about the late addition with the stone train though... that $3m you spent could've nerfed your final result! Cheers mate!
@@AjaxpostPlays I just checked the latest save game file I passed on to you... and no weeds are showing on my Macbook... so not sure what's happened??? Weird!
@@richcodesweb No matey! Settle down. Weeds are like farts - he who notices them first, owns them! Which means Ajax, who's up next week, has to FIX ALL THE WEEDS LMAO!!!!!
Hi, thank you taking the time to comment, it is much appreciated. But, yeah, I'm still very much learning this game so I'm sure I have made many poor choices! 🙄 I do want to do more videos for Craftomation, so any help or advice you can offer to make my programs more efficient would be very welcome indeed. Cheers.
At this point, you really have won already, but it would be nice to see the goodbye messages! If poor Annabelle won't get support from you haha then we will see those soon I think.
Hi, yes, I don't see the competition coming back at all but they do seem to be quite resilient! I've played on a couple more years and they're still hanging on! 😕 Anyway, next episode I'll get through to handhelds and wrap up this series so I can start playing with the latest update.
I wish there was a simplified version of this game like game dev tycoon! I just want to build and research computers and not care about economics and politics i need to rob my brain! lol
Hi, yeah, there are a few games similar to Game Dev Tycoon, though to be honest I've not tried them out so far. 🙄 And it is the bigger strategic scope of this game that drew me to it but I think, perhaps, if you use the 'simplified' map, an easier difficulty and don't do anything rash in the first few years this can be quite a chill game, designing and playing with rewriting computer history. Probably. 😎
There is no way to move to a new city map, it has been suggested but does not seem like a priority of the dev, it might take a lot of work to pull off. Priorities are pretty broken. Basically they are weighted so high that most of the time they will always do something over and over, unless it is something limited like cooking food or buying groceries. I usually put these kinds of tasks at 1 so they do them when I am out of food. Everything thing else; fun things, eating, sleeping, going to work, etc. I leave at 2, you can put them at 3 if you want, just make sure they are all the same level. Only adjust them if there is a good reason to do more or less of a task then they are doing now, because if you lower it they may never do it again, and if you raise it, it's all they want to do. I'd also save buying food at a restaurant as a manual task, unless you are rich. If they are hungry they should eat at home, also keep cooking at a higher priority, as they will cook 4 meals at once, and they will eat those as needed before cooking more. Often they eat the last meal, then start cooking right away, for the next few meals, which will be eaten as needed. If it was me to fast track the actor job, i'd get a student loan from the bank, and keep 1 part time job, You may need to watch closely to make sure you get all your work and school hours done, as it will be like working 2 jobs still, and school can take up a lot of hours, at least for the base game schooling I have done. But it should not be too bad if you adjust your priorities as I stated above. This will add a little debt but it would be quick. If that feels risky keep working 2 jobs if needed, and 10,000 is not hard to get after a promotion or 2, but it may take a few in game years. You did lose the points for your birthday, you just looked at your health and not the happiness. Those buffs can be pretty powerful so I might have taken the dopamine rush as well as inspired. it would have helped kept your fun up at the cost of a few hours of sleep, any time your fun is filled you get those happiness points that can then be used to change your likes and dislikes, to more match what you are doing. The points are really just there to spend on birthdays, and don't have much relevance otherwise unless you let your bars go to 0, I tend to get more health than I can spend. Always check your tool tips. When you sleep in your bed since you dislike sleep how much is that lowering your fun? When you are at work, what are you getting bonuses penalties for? Especially when you get the actor job you will want to try to like or even dislike things that are hurting your fun stat. And if you love something your job uses, you get a new needs bar that will fill every time you go to work. Though there is nothing wrong with loving things you don't use at work, you just need to do those things for fun outside of work. But if you have a few extra love and addicted bars filled, you can really rack up those happiness points. One of the coolest things about the game is disliking something can be just as good as liking something. For example, I have a guy who is an auto mechanic. When I started he liked comfort and got -80 fun penalty at work. Now with birthdays changing things, he dislikes comfort and gets a +80 fun bonus when working, instead of the -80 penalty. It is possible to rake up enough buffs at the right job for your character, that you actually have fun at work, despite a base -400 penalty. Though I am at a net -40 in my game, which is good enough. :) Looks like you got the moving in working. I have never moved out, if you just move into the new place it will boot you out of the old one at the end of the month. You just made it an extra step than it needed to be. And you can always go back the summary screen, and resign the old lease. Sometimes I will look for something bigger, and find I can't afford it or it is too far away from work, so I resign with the old place.
Hi, thanks again for your generously detailed observations. 👍 I'd think that relocating to another city would be a relatively easy thing to achieve but that rather depends on how the individual city maps are constructed so there could be extra complications as with expanding the social relations features the dev has talked about. I think (hope?) I'm getting to understand the priorities system better, I realised that I had to change several of them after finishing this recording. The positive use of negative likes is an interesting idea, will have to see if I can remember to think about utilising that when I'm recording an episode. 🤔 The moving thing was weird, I just did it previously but I reckon I might have just got myself confused by the fact I was moving down the same street and not somewhere entirely new, maybe...
Hi, ive stumbled upon you by chance, this game looks really good and so much potential. Maybe you can even make series where you have a kid and move into another town? Because the town itself is amazing. For example, if you make a business, a bakery, then the town is very lack in agricultural, it might not suited. Then maybe you can make into some goal per generation? Like, one to build business, one to reach the top of career, and many more. I hope you can make this as series into your youtube channel, i like how you play this, not rushing, carefully learn things along the way… quick question, where did you set for socializing? I think i missed it..
Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. 😊 As it happens, I have now started a new series, in a 'real' town so I can play with many more of the game's features. 🥳 Not sure how long the series will last, as I am not very good at planning so when it gets complicated things can go badly wrong quite quickly! But, if there's enough interest and I do manage to work it out, I hope to get far enough to help novice players understand at least the basics. 🤞 As for enabling socializing; if you click the first icon in the character panel ("Relations") or press 'Z' there's a little checkbox to turn on/off meeting people.
I think you should! 😎 Like Computer Tycoon there's quite a lot of calculations going on behind each element and I reckon you would enjoy working out 'winning' strategies.
Ahh, I often do read descriptions (have to edit a lot of 'dead air' in my videos); but I went back and checked, I don't think I did for this one ... it was suggesting I am less than perfect?!?! 😲🤣 Thanks again for your support. 😊
Hi, yes, still in Early Access. The dev says he expects it to be six to twelve months before official 'release'. But, could be less, could be more ... depends on how well EA goes. 🤔
Very true. I didn't use the loading controls much in the past, I was always profitable enough just letting the game work it out. But have realised that if you want to achieve specific goals like growing a particular industry or city those controls are really important.
Well done mate! Nice complicated little setup there LOL As map maker, I envisaged an industrial hub there, so you called it! And congrats on your first "no-flip-flop" challenge! It wasn't compulsory as far as the "rules" go... but now you have no excuse not to do it in the future :) Cheers!
Thank you sir. 😊 Yeah, I don't often focus on complex routes but seeing how well they worked for my fellow collaborators thought I should give it a go ... especially considering this nightmare of a map we're playing on! 😉😂 _"It wasn't compulsory"_ ... now he tells us! 😉 Well, trying something new can indeed be quite entertaining; though wait till you see what I have planned for my next free-play ... 🤔😇
The naming of the L2 cache CPU and its description is kinda werid in reality there is the L1 L2 and L3 CPU cache they are just fast access DRAM for CPU, L3 can be 9MB, L2 can be 1,5MB, L3 can be 348KB. before 2010 L3 and L2 were on the motherboard while L1 was in the CPU (except server CPUs wich had them in) after 2010 all Caches were in the CPUs
Glad to see you are slowly getting around to double tracking. I konw I would have a hay day sorting out your tracks especially around Seattle. Then again I've been playing Train games since the first Railroad Tycoon that came out on the Amiga 1990 (that's 34 years ago .... man I'm old). Since then I've played almost all Train games that have been released.
Thank you. 😊 Now that income is fairly reliable I should be able to double track everywhere. Me too, I somehow 'acquired' Railroad Tycoon for DOS many, many years ago and that kick-started my love of transport tycoon builders. Though can't say that my ability to lay track has improved much!! 🤣
Thank you. ☺ Apologies for the slow upload schedule at the moment but, y'know, life and stuff! Anyway ... thinking of wrapping this series up, regardless of victory or not, taking a short break and then coming back to play with the very latest update. 🤔🤞
