why weren't we taught this in our schools? Why isn't every school teaching this history now? We can't change what is happening if we don't know what happened; if the real truth of what was done to these peoples and their languages, culture, ways of life and what they lost is not told. This is a tragedy no one talks about - but when I listen to these speakers and descendents, I can't help but admire their resiliency and they need to have every right to teach their spiritual culture to their children and grandchildren. My ancestors are part of the people who took these things away from them. They alone know how to live with the Earth. We all should be looking to them for guidance.

Russell Boham was my instructor for the Research class for my B. A. in Native American Studies at Humboldt State back in around 1999 or 2000. Now I have a Master's degree. Hi, Russell! Hope you are doing ok. I really appreciated your class. You taught me the basics of [historical-comparative] research-remember my final paper? I got an A-. Also I found out from a cousin who is a genealogist that my family is Shawnee, not Cherokee as we thought. Due to the Beaver Wars, a lot of Shawnee moved into Tennessee-Cherokee country-which is where we immigrated from to Arkansas back in 1828. The British during a census listed the Indians in Tenn. as all Cherokee. The Shawnee either didn't know we were being "misclassified" or we knew and didn't say anything. Later the US gov't hated the Shawnee because of Tecumseh, so we probably were ok with being thought Cherokee.

The evaluator needs to stop saying, "Mmmm hmmm" a million times after each of his statements. She even does it as he is talking. So, distracting and sounds very dismissive of what he is trying to communicate. It's like she is not even listening to what he has to say. Very patronizing and ingenuine.

I am also an educator and lover of story telling. From my particular perspective, I think what gets lost is the cultural difference in story telling styles. Native storytelling has a different appreciation for time. And when Sherman Alexie calls natives the masters of the art of the tangent, he isn't kidding. Natives have a true appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and how much time that takes. The Western mind has mastered compartmentalization speeding up processes. I believe this, along with protection of our own historical identity, to be the source of much of the criticism. The challenge I have been struggling with is bridging these chasms. Modern technologies effect on our attention span is also having an effect.
