I’m brand new to through hiking and I’m planning to the foothills trail in 7 weeks. I will also be using a tent as you, do you ever use a hanging rain fly, like what’s used for a hammock over your tent? I have one, and was thinking of bringing for a second layer of protection on a rainy night, but I’m also trying to cut as much weight from my pack as possible.
Cool! You picked a good time of year 👍 As for your question, I think it really comes down to how comfortable you are with your tent's performance and how bad the weather forecast is... I've found my Big Agnes tent's standard rain fly to be enough to repel water, even in heavy rains. Since I've never really had issues with water getting inside the tent, I haven't seen the need to bring any "extra protection." I think we all tend to "pack our fears" starting out, but as we get more comfortable with our gear and the various circumstances we'll encounter on the trail, we learn what really needs to be in the pack and what can probably stay at home 🙂 Good luck, and I hope you have a great trip!
Thanks! This was actually not a very long hike at all. It's a little over half a mile (.6) across the East Bluff. The Devil's Doorway Trail is only .1, and the Balanced Rock Trail is .4. The Balanced Rock Trail is fairly steep, though, as it goes up the side of the bluff. You guys did great! How heavy were your bags? 30 miles in a day must have drained you guys....suffer any fatigue? Shin splints? Blisters? I ask because I have a rule not to exceed 10 miles in a day or I will start getting some of those symptoms....but recently I did a 12 mile hike that had me doubting my "rule". Thanks for the post...I was there last fall and it is so nice there.....except the rolling hills can be brutal lol
Wow!! So spacious and green! Amazing scenery! Fantastic shots early in the morning. Congratulations on your choice of location!! Great track!!! I would also like to go through this. 🔥L23
Hi Mike!! I love this cable car ride!! 🔥What a stunning view towards the sea. I love this perfect day for sightseeing. Such a spacious and beautiful sea environment! Beautiful landscape!💯L18
Thanks! I'm finally getting used to the shorter hair 😂 I donated 12 inches to Wigs for Kids before leaving for Portugal. I absolutely LOVED Madeira, and this was a pretty unique day... Thanks for taking the time to check it out! ✌
It was a fun day, for sure! And it was actually pretty low-effort, since the walking we did was all flat or downhill. Thanks for taking the time to follow along! ✌
They don't even pull the empty sleds back up the hill! They pile them in a truck, and the guys take a bus back to the top 😂 Thanks for taking the time to check it out ✌
If offered the chance to do it again, I would definitely accept! When I was a kid, we used to have a festival where they did "bed races" on a frozen creek... That's about as close as I've ever come to something like the sledge ride. Pretty unique! Thanks for taking the time to check it out ✌
Nice cable car sky ride. Those orange rooftops really do stand out against the green trees. Cool sledding rides. Looks like you’re having a nice trip.👍 13.
The cable car views looked fantastic and a half an hour wait time is not bad. Very neat to see the sledges. I don't think I've seen anything like that before.
I agree the wait times were pretty reasonable! We did go near the end of the "off season," though, and I've heard that waits can range up to a couple of hours during peak season. The views on the cable car were fantastic, and the sledges were definitely a unique way to ensure we'll remember our time in Funchal 😁 Thanks for taking the time to check it out with us! ✌
I absolutely loved Madeira! The sledges were definitely a part of our visit to Funchal that we will always remember 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to check it out! ✌
This was Maura's "must do" day in Madeira, in return for hiking... I certainly wasn't complaining! I'm finally starting to get used to the hair, myself 😂
I absolutely loved Madeira! I enjoy traveling quite a bit, but my bank account prefers I stay closer to home 😂 Thanks for taking the time to check out part of the trip! ✌
We made it within a few miles of the Spanish border, but I still haven't quite made it to Spain. I had a friend who ran with the bulls and said it was an amazing adrenaline rush, but I think the days where I might've considered it are behind me 😂 I would highly recommend Portugal, though! Thanks for taking the time to check out part of the trip 👍✌
