Came here for the meme, left realizing how ahead of his time this guy was. This guy was so passionate about renewable no till farming, and he was right. I'm a home gardener and ive been doing this for years, now large scale farmers are starting to switch to this style of farming more and more because it's sustainable.

Most of these comments are about memes I came here like they did. But I stayed cause holy shit not paying for herbicide,nitrogen,fertilizer, reducing chances of white mold and sds on soybeans and minimizing weeds is ingenious.

I wonder how much nutrient runoff there is with this rich soil? The cover crops die fast when killed. Where did it all go?

Steve Groff is another source. I searched on RU-vid, but only found gardening examples. Commercial sweet corn no-till should be the same as field corn. The short season provides time for good cover crop growth before next year.

Not to be a smart a$$ but last time I checked I get same dollars per bushel for my grain if protein is 2% or 10% ... I realize this because mine is above average in quality most years .. high test weight .. what incentive do I have to improve if there is no premium for a premium product... the only way I see to make money is to reduce expenses
@savedfaves
@savedfaves 4 года назад
But as you alluded to your expenses are greater. These systems by their design have fewer and less expenses. If you are getting the same per bushel but your expenses are 3X then your profit will be 1/3. Your business as with all farmers should be profit (not revenue) and rebuilding the soils on your land for your grandkids. And it's not just that these systems are more profitable, they are far less harmful to the land and animals and waterways outside and around your farm. If you take the time to look at videos on RU-vid you can see these methods can in fact rebuild these ecologies and rivers. It is a no-brainer. More profit and healthier land and higher quality food.

savedfaves are you a farmer? Do you know the economics... I would have to invest in a lot of equipment... cover crop seed is expensive.. I already no till ....my point was quality of the grain is a moot point because farmers in the USA aren’t paid based on quality we are paid based on volume...if everyone wants to change the way things are now maybe we should start at the end and work backwards to the beginning... I already raise premium grain .... it doesn’t matter...

We see results in our garden since we stopped tilling & mulched with hay 4 years ago. This year the peas were covered with nodules, never seen that before. And earth worms are plentiful but we still only have 6-8" of good soil before hardpan clay. This year we let the lawn go uncut to see what it would do. The grass grew hip high and weeds abounded. I mowed a strip and was impressed with the amount of thatch that it will make this winter. Will see how the lawn does next spring with the standing grass and the cut strip of thatch. Really, this is not only for farmers & gardeners, it's for anyone with soil on their property. David Brandt's words, "do a little bit at a time" have us seeing what will work, but now we have to figure out how to do this without buying more machinery in northern Canada. "How do you promote it." Start small with small farmers and gardeners? Ruth Stout's method of gardening is what we started with, then are trying Charles Dowding's method in the garden. Then saw David Brandt's method and 2 years ago started it in our hay field. As it was said, it just feels right, and from there we will figure out how to make it all work.
