I have been a working artist in many mediums for over 50 years. The last 20 years I have specialized in encaustic painting. I have been teaching this technique for 15 years and love to share all that I know about painting with wax, My website is :http.www.ezshwan.com. There you can see lots of examples of my art
Hello Derick, I would definitely take at least the first class Drawing Features. I wouldn't go forward to encaustic portraits without a basic knowledge of how to draw a face.
@@derickelsner6802 It would help to learn painting faces in oil before encaustic. I use the same palette layout for both techniques, but of course, the encaustic is more challenging , mainly because it does not blend like oil and heat must be used to fuse each layer of encaustic .
Beautiful!! Do you use encaustic medium as just a top coat for the underpainting or do you use pigmented encaustic and paint over the underpainting and let the watercolor layer come through?
I do use one layer of clear encaustic over the underpainting and continue adding more layers of clear and white encaustic to push back and soften some of the shapes. There is about 2 liters of encaustic wax on this painting.
Outstanding work!!! The hands are the most difficult to get spot on and to do so in encaustic even harder, im sure. But your hand studies are like photographs, they are so realisticly painted, im blown away by your skill and your art. Tibby x
Dear Tibby, yes it is tricky to paint hands in encaustic. I had to practice for a while with a very gentle, small flame on the torch. Than you for your comment.
Yes, of course. A batik pen. Another question please...when you add charcoal sketches, and then a layer of clear medium over, how do you prevent the sketch from smearing? Thanks very much for your expert help with these questions.
Judy Wise came all the way to Australia in 2014. I had the honour to take a class with her and three other USA encaustic teachers. Thank you for teaching her. so that she can teach me... I wonder how many thousands of encaustic artists you have "taught" in this manner. Your life is one to celebrate!
This is a really late answer, but I just saw your question. R & F paints products the best, in my opinion) oil paint sticks. they are as soft as lipstick, beautiful colors and have some wax in them. They are perfect to use with encaustic. by the way, R & F is noted for all their encaustic paints.

True! That is where all begins - where I began. The rest of the equipment for finer art is on the online shop - I've been practicing fine art with EA for the past 5 years now...even donated two of my paintings to a museum. Happy painting!
Thank you so much for sharing your studio set up. Oh I love the idea of pounding the chain for texture and heating the little pallet knives up . Cheers!
What a delight! I love this so much. Just gathering materials to begin my journey into encaustics after several years of mixed media collage and altered art. Thanks for the inspiration.
