I don't understand the costumes in this scene. The singers are wearing Georgian garb but the audience is dressed in regency attire. Wasn't this opera written in the 1870s? Can someone explain?
ubermench3000 Hi ! The singers are “performers” in the scene. That is to say that the “audience” on stage are watching another performance within the scene. That is why there are two styles of clothing.

The opera was written in 1887/1888; it was based on Alexander Pushkin’s short novel with the same title which Pushkin created in 1834. However the composer and his brother (who wrote the libretto) decided to move the action some 50 years earlier - to the times of Catherine the Great. This episode does not exist in the novel, it was added to the opera for more splendor and action. The episode depicts a ball in the imperial palace; and part of this ball is a performance of a short spectacle about a shepherdess who is in love with a poor shepherd and prefers him to a wealthy old guy who tries to offer her a life of comfort and luxury. Such performances were very popular in 17-18th centuries and often are referred to as pastorals. The music is absolutely beautiful in my humble opinion. I fell in love with the opera and this pastoral since I was 18 and now at 65 still love it immensely.

Да, но вариант Чайковского мне нравится больше. Он мне слышится даже больше "моцартовским" чем у самого Моцарта. Более мягким, и каким-то более "умиротворённым" что ли. Альпиийские луга Австрии посреди высоких холмов и вдали виднеющихся белоголовых гор, так и стоят перед глазами.
