After reading “The Planet Trillaphon…” it became heartbreakingly evident what a cry for help every page of IJ is. And i understood why he was so bemused that everyone thought it was such a funny book. GOOD NIGHT SWEET PRINCE AND FLIGHTS OF ANGELS SING THEE TO THY REST
I see. He wasn’t a spoiled angsty brat. He was a drug addict. I finally understand this guy. Why pretend to be something you’re not and arguably less likable. I couldn’t stand him when I thought he was a brat. An addict makes sense. I suppose empathy for addicts wasn’t like it is today. His pr and own image making, perpetuates the depressed pretentious narcissistic white guy culture, which his work has nothing to do with .
UNLIKE many people who talked about how great this book was, especially in the media, I ACTUALLY READ THIS SHITTY BOOK BEGINNING TO END. Most of the praise came from hipster dipshits who repeated others' comments. I DARE YOU TO READ THIS WHOLE BOOK!
When does the book get enjoyable? When will it 'hit me' like it did with other people? I'm on page 560 and I've found the experience torturous and unenjoyable.
Love this. I’m almost done with my 4th reading of Infinite Jest, but this time it’s audio. I don’t think it can ever be exhausted, so I really appreciate this.
Thank you that was very informative and illuminating. I now have the confidence to not continue reading infinite jest because I realized that I am not into encyclopedic novels--and never was.
Stick with this (like Infinite Jest). He hits his stride midway through Part 1 and then gets better and better. Really -- this 4 part series is brilliant.
I got about halfway through IJ before I realized I wasn’t really processing it, and more marathoning it. Should’ve listened to this first! Great lecture.
Phenomenal. I watched all 4 parts. Dr O'Bryan I really appreciate what you did here, must've been tough without an audience. IJ is my favorite novel of all time. 1st time reading it = confusion but enthralled by the humor and writing style. 2nd time = ok I'm not nearly so confused and can piece together what's happening plot-wise much better. 3rd time = WHOA I SEE ALL THESE CONNECTIONS - so many details that are linked in some cases across hundreds of pages. There are a few old message boards online filled with insights from IJ fans unraveling mysteries.
I think it is time to read "Infinite Jest" for the 3rd time! It is just completely transformative. Also PLEASE folks check out "The Pale King" :) ... anyways I once read IF as my avatar in VR ... maybe I do it again in Second Life ....
My mother used to have a list of charcters written down and fill in new ones with their story details as the books progressed to help her memory. I am curious if some of the difficulty with this book is staying on top of" who's who", so to say. I find it infuriating when I start mixing characters and need to backtrack..
Most characters are very distinguished, memorable, lot of artifice into construction, you won’t have a problem tracking characters. The most difficult part of reading this book is some of the mathematics/pharmaceutical argot, and the unusually broad vocabulary.
