For me a Chicano is AMERICAN first that honors his Mexican heritage. Mexican Americans basically fought to defend America in all wars and started political movements to be treated the same as Anglo Americans.

We can appreciate each others cultures but we are not the same. I know Costa Ricans, but I don't identify as one. We are different in the end since the Chicano culture is tied to Mexico.
That’s great that u a variety of explanations but the language barrier created the word Chicano during the brazero program for Mexican contracted for labor , I grew up knowing the real meaning of what people in general profile as Chicano . The term was created or keyed into a term during a classification not necessarily a segregation as society has accepted . Origin of Chicano - US custom border agents assigned a worker for labor contracts to be filled for workers needed . Classified as skilled labor or non skilled labor , chili picker ( non skilled labor ) sent to farm labor contracts. Skilled laborer or tradesmen were essential for city of industry where cannery workers were also needed . The term Chicano was coined during the classification process , the answer to question being asked placed worker on bus to work distination , assuming upon non English speaking classification, are you a shit canner ( chit-canner ) skilled laborer , or a. (chili picker ) non skilled laborer . Thus today coined the term known today as a CHICANO when all that was being implied is if labor had trade or skill needed to work in cannery work , a shit canner! I used to not like the term Chicano because I associated it with gangbangers and low riders in the 80s and 90s and that has never been my style. I am ok with the term now, but I still prefer Mexican American or Mexican (I have dual citizenship).

Chicano is a person who was born in america with Hispanic descendant ,so for an example if your parents are from mexico or any other Latin country and they come to america and there kids were born in america you are consider a Chicano.now if a Chicano has kids in america they are consider Americans.

Where did the word CHICANO come from? In the 1930s-40s the United States government brought mexican to help and work here while the American where at war in Europe.And most of the worker came from the state of Michoacan so instead of saying the whole word they refer the first Gen CHICANO from MichoaCANO because these people are so proud of their state they dont like to mingle with other race or people of the same country,But that was then now its different.

If you can't speak Spanish or act cholo like, then Mexicans don't accept you guys in their community and you are just American, if you can speak descent but not perfect Spanish you are considered Mexican American 50-50. We don't like it when you guys say you are Aztec or Maya, because you have to actually practice their customs and speak their language to be considered Indigenous. ✌
