Explanation of the very first Pokémon art style, known as Ken Sugimori’s Watercolor Style: This art style is what most Pokémon fans think of when they think of the first and second generation of the Pokémon games. What makes this art style unique is that it was “accidental.” The elevated contrast between the choice of colors and the shading of those colors along with the unusual use of white balance is the final outcome of the scanned look to preserve the art. This art style unwittingly brought us one of the most ideal art styles in the history of gaming. Sugimori created many sketches to judge what Pokémon were going to be. Some of the very first sketches display the same elements to the first generation’s finished Pokédex. Even so, the styles lacked the aspects that was added to the style later on. The whole explanation that many of the earliest sketches changed was the cause of artistic concept of the original silhouette. The word silhouette means removing all of the features and details in the outline, which leaves only the shape of the image. When shapes and images have a similar silhouette, they become hard to tell apart. Regardless of the many efforts, multiple silhouettes of the Gen 1 Pokémon sprites look alike, causing the images to lack their own personality and lasting impression.
