Mae Dahlberg was Stan's first serious relationship, common-law wife, sometimes called Mae Laurel, Australian, married, one son, but Stan was still going by his real surname, Jefferson, and it was Mae that helped him to decide his 'stage' name Laurel long before he made it official, legal, so really no reaon why Mae couldn't also call herself Laurel. He was with her, personally/professionally, for many years, through all the bad 'starting out' tough years, although for some years held him back as he stuck with her when his career progressed but not hers as things started to rapidly change when their work moved from stage to movies. Stan was able to keep up with what that change meant, but as an ex stage act dancer, Mae was not so flexible and eventually impeded Stan, both personally and professionally which were rather intertwined as they lived in that new environment. Mae equips herself rather well in this movie as it's her more her genre, dancing, in my opinion, but less well from then on. It'a shame really because had she been with someone else, someone not as popular or talented, she may have fared much better than she did, she was just out of step with the movies and all those changes, shall we say. Once removed from the relationship perhaps a little late. she went downhill, career wise, and was considered as 'box office poisin' which impacted Stan's career, and didn't exactly help hers! I do feel sorry for Mae as she was with Stan through thick and thin, mostly thin, dodging land lords, rent etc which can't have been easy - and it must have been annoying seeing Stan's career slowly take off with pretty ladies, not her a double whammy of emotions and flnances! 'First wife' syndrome! She does get some of her own back later, when Stan is with Oliver, very popular, and rather, by comparison, rich! 👌
I deeply appreciate Sir. chaplin for giving my compatriot, Mr. Takano, then, his secretary a part in this valedictory movie before going to the First National. This shows the whole world him being impartial.
