Two things from a born and bred Sydneysider: PLEASE TIP YOUR WAITERS if they have done a passable job. We do not frown on tipping, it's just not as widespread as the US. Also, BUY YOUR SUNSCREEN IN AUSTRALIA. Our sunscreens are the strongest and highest-rated in the world, for obvious reasons. Your sunscreen designed for Europe/America is not gonna cut it under our harsh UV rays.

It's fine to tip here, but it's not expected AT ALL. Makes me feel better about doing it if my service was really good. I tipped my server at one of the steakhouses on Sydney Harbor and he thanked me profusely. Though minimum wage might be "high" (US$16.11 per hour as of writing), cost of living in Sydney (and in Australia in general) FAAAAR exceed that. So if you get great service, it's always nice to tip.

Are you sure about that? In 2015 Sydney was ranked as the friendliest city and in 2016 was ranked second behind Charleston SC in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards survey. The Condé Nast is the only friendliest ranking I could find. Are you referring to the Time Out Index ranking of Sydney, as the third-worst city in the world for making new friends?
@Accesserised

Yes, in 2022 Sydney was ranked the third-worst place for making new friends, as well as having the *second-worst night-life* in the world. The study you mentioned was from 2015? A lot has changed in 9 years, but the Harbour has always been popular for taking photos ^^

@@Accesserised The night life is not what it use to be, due to nanny state. People are generally friendly in day to day interactions. Most people are not likely to walk past someone in distress without assisting. If someone bumps into you they apologise.
@Accesserised
@Accesserised 2 месяца назад
Most people in any developed society would apologise for bumping you and 'help a stranger in distress.' That's just common decency, not the same as actually *forming genuine connections* with people. 75% of respondants in the 2022 survey agreed that "making new friends was either hard or impossible in Sydney." At least we can agree that the nightlife is practically non-existent since all the restrictions ^^

Sunscreen < really #FFS I’ve lived in Oz for my entire life, yes we have it pushed through the schools & other places & everyone in 90’s was scared out of their wits by the “slip slop slap” campaigns the truth is if you are fair skinned you need sunscreen if not like all things in moderation!!! Get a light amount of sun over a couple of day & as you brown you then can handle more sun, stay hydrated wear a hat & sunglasses & stop worrying unless of course your a “Ginger” then apply liberal amounts of 50+ stay away from crucifixes salt garlic & generally don’t venture out during the day < but seriously The sun in Oz is no different to else where on planet earth the ozone layer over Oz has reclose in the 2000’s Simply be sun smart if your prone to burning in the country your from on that odd hot day you’ll burn here, if you don’t burn back home you won’t burn here Enjoy your time here & beware of the “drop bears” 👍😎
