I just finished watching your documentary and hung on your every word. I especially loved seeing you collecting cuttings from Philly trees. I was going to ask about classes or events like that in Fairmont Park, but after reading comments saw that Temple ( for students) is the next planned class. How does one get notification of classes, tastings, sales of your cuttings, etc. I am in the Medford NJ area, have 5 figs trees of unknown variety that were brought to Jersey by Italian families ( 2 different). I struggle to get them right, but this year most are loaded with fruit ( they seem to ripen 1 at a time). I feel like I’m missing something, but will keep watching your tips and wisdom. I’m glad I found your channel.
Hi Ross, when a scaffold is rejuvenated? I mean that how many cropping years after should I rejuvenate a scaffold? My apologies for unrelated question to the topic. Thanks
i have two one year old persimmon trees w/ wire protection (many deer). no idea if they are male or female. have another beautiful 8 yo. no idea of sex, but never any fruit. ??
Just found this video and omgg awsome but now I am more confused. What would you suggest as the best for sc. I was only able to find celeste, lots of brown turkey, kadota, black mission and Chicago hardy. Finally got a yard and would always been my dream to have my first ever fig tree. Which would you recommend would be close to the Smith's? Thank you in advance ❤
I have a Kadota in a barrel container that I have had for three years that has yet to produce any fruit. Any idea why this might be the case? It's in full sun and gets fertilized, but I just get nothing. I'm in Ohio Zone 6A and someone told me that this variety doesn't grow well here and splits like crazy and don't taste well and that it needs to be grown in a very warm and dry area of the country. What are your thoughts about this?
I have 2 chicago hardy that I bought before finding your channel. I basically bought them from Stark Bros just to add something different than my fruit trees and berry bushes. I've never even tasted a fig 😂 but then I hadn't tasted a pawpaw before buying my pawpaw trees either lol. I am learning so much from your content 🙌 my Chicago hardy finally started fruiting last month after I saw your video on pinching and the double bubbles on the stems. I hope they have time to ripen (I am in South Central PA) Now I'm really looking forward to adding more fig varieties if these 2 survive over winter inside my insulated shed 🤞🏻
I grow poms in New Jersey and Salavatski shows decent resistance to fungus. I am trying out Azadi, which is supposed to have really high resistance based on studies from University of Florida. Fungus is definitely a big issue. We have high humidity and a medium growing season. Sweet, fungal resistant varieties that can be grown in pots and protected in the winter make the most sense.
Do younger fig trees produce smaller figs? I’ve got first year fig trees with very small figs on them, probably a quarter of their expected size. Is this normal or should I be doing something different? Appreciate your videos, Ross. You’re the Boss!
@@RossRaddi for a plant addict like me, but that being said I like to have a lot of verity of fruit so I don’t like to waste space. The amount of variation in flavor of figs is why I don’t really see a big issue with having so many as long as they aren’t redundant for no reason like the name
This is tip useless. The sun needs to hit the top of the leaves, not the sides, to maximize photosynthesis. I see no proof of your 'theory'. All you do is talk, but no empirical data. I'll believe it when I see the results. Until then, I say this tip is BS.
Sounds like all you do is don't listen. Widening the canopy will capture more sunlight long term. That's common sense. You don't need a peer reviewed study, a crystal ball, or the world's greatest fig expert to confirm this. My God, listen to yourself.
Ross, I've had bug problems with my fig trees. How do you combat the bugs? Can you point me to a video on your channel addressing bug combat or make a video in the future educating us on best practices first bug control? I've been trying to remain organic, but the bugs completely destroyed my plums and nectarine and are still attacking the figs even though it is well over 100 degrees here in AZ zone 9B.
@RossRaddi I'm not sure. I never see the bugs during the day, but only see huge chunks of the leaves bitten away. Are there bugs/worms that prowl at night? 🐛
It should be purple with cracks on its skin before you pick it. If you're not sure about the variety, twist it of the branch, and if you see a milky substance, that variety is not ripe. Keep it on the tree longer. I'm not an arborist but i play one on TV. 😅 🤣 😂
It would be interisting to compare the taste of Green Michurinska and Dalmatie. Despite of the size they seem to share similarities. Might be like for VdB and Little Miss Figgy.
