Hi and Gday from sunny Queensland , maybe a couple of stinger hooks at the nose of your lure would prevent dropping hooked fish , top vid Roger , thank you , cheers
Ever use or consider using fish friendly single hooks back and front instead of a treble? Taylor usually hammer a hard body lure and cause it damage. You were probably hit by Salmon most of the time
In river fishing, i use a feathered double assist hook + a short free flowing stinger hook. The catch rate is v high, no escape when the stinger hook hits. All types of fish cannot resist a shiny micro jig. Yeah! 😂
That's the problem with metal lures if you hook up to something big and they spit the hooks you have to duck for cover😜Also using a 25 dollar lure and losing it hurts more than paying 25 bucks for some mulies and a few gangies.
Loving your video,I enjoy pier fishing too, only only thing is am so much more careful returning them than you seem to be just throwing them at distance away ! But enjoy your love of fishing as many of us on here do ! Tight lines from Malachy from Galway bay in the West of Ireland
A shame about those lost fish! I wonder is there anything we can do to improve the catch rate. Suicide hook ? Stinger hook? back to back hooks? You have the backup of Australian Salmon down there! Here ,in Qld, we don't! Its a tailer or nothing!
Hey Roger, what's your opinion on using a drone to cast bait? Ive love surf fishing but all the beaches near me are super flat and hard to cast deep enough
Do a fair bit of spinning for salmon. Usually replace trebles with single hooks…not because of lost fish. Better fishermen then me reckon the you more likely to stay connected with single hooks but I can’t tell. But I just find trebles do more damage to fish mouth than singles. Also, I use a small ball bearing swivel with a snap…makes lure changes quicker. And if I get time, connect my leader with an FG knot,…no clunking through guides and will probably give you a bit more distance. Great way to fish.
We are all adding our idea about how to keep them from jumping and throwing the hook, so I will have my go now. :) The most important thing with Kahawai ( which Australians call sea sea salmon ) is that you keep some weight on them the entire time. And the reason is because their mouth has a lot of weak parts compared to other fish, to bite, the fish hinges open its mouth like a bag, and when it is open like that, a large part of it is very thin cartilage with paper thin skin on it. And if the tip of your hook goes through that, it tears a slot in it till the bight of the hook is stopped by the jaw or the hinge structure of the mouth. And then you have almost certainly not got the tip of the hook and the barb set in anything, you are holding the fish entirely by pulling the bight ( inside curve ) of the hook on whatever stopped it pulling through that thin section. Imagine holding up a bucket by crooking your finger around the handle. Now, when you let the weight off the fish, he wags his head, and half the time the hook simply flies free of whatever it is pulling on, and the tear in the skin doesn't stop it. Ad they like to jump, so you have to be ready the instant they do and increase the weight you have on them, because once in the air, they will come towards you much faster, giving themselves some slack. And as we saw in the clip, they throw the hook very often once they are in the air. Once you have caught a lot of them, you will know this is all true because of how often They get free the instant you give them any slack They drop off the hook by themselves at the boat or on the beach You find the tear I am talking about with the hook just laying in it without the tip and barb being in anything. As we saw in the clip.
A swivel between the hook and the lure can help your catch rate. When a fish shakes its head it is essentially using the weight of the lure as a lever to throw the hook. A swivel will absorb most of the head shakes and makes it a lot harder for the fish to throw the hook.
Slide baiting for Jew is the go I catch many big Jew slide baiting the 10 to 20 kilo fish sometimes you will get lucky a they will nail a cut bait but really they want big live baits. Big bream and tarwine, whiting and dart are excellent live baits. Blackfish not so good for me anyway 👍
23:40 get some normal straight j hooks, either one or put two opposing on your ring. You need the strait shank to get better hook ups, though salmon are the best lure spitters I know.
5:53 when the water is flat like that I belt three casts in across the top of the water (to attract attention) then cast to catch I would also want a silver or gold spinner to get lots of flash in clear water.
