I remember travelling on the class 155 to Hundersfield University in the 1990's, eventually getting a job designing the modern equivalents many years later.
You got a better view than I did. I could see white coloured rays that slowly moved from my home, near Dudley. I got one glimpse of a lilac arc at one stage.
Hi there! This is a pretty useful information. I wish i knewd before my mic is stuck with a battery in it. :D Any idea how can i remove the bottom part without using brue force? Can i spray some oil from the bottom part to the spring?
Some WD40 or (better yet) GT85 would help loosen things up, but be sure to clean it afterwards. If you apply the pressure to the XLR plug as you rotate it, it should spread the load across the mic more evenly. Though breakages can still occur. It's definitely worth a try in my opinion though, otherwise the battery will eventually leak and kill the mic. I recommend applying a dot of lithium grease to the threads to prevent it happening again.

@@ErynKnight we tried to use WD40... the problem was damaged threads. After we separate it we cleaned and "repaired" the thread and now we can use it as "new".
Really pretty! Even down here in the Southern USA states, I managed to see a faint red glow across the night sky. We took some time lapse pics that night and the following night to compare. The pics were very red during May 10, but nothing noticeable during May 11. Also kinda curious, I see some stationary stars in the video in 1080p, one is around 1/3 from the left and 1/3 from the top. I wonder what those are? Quirks of optics, or perhaps some video compression artifacts?
Hey JMG sent me over here because he said ANNA would expose me to Roko’s Basilisk if I didn’t. I wish I had seen this first hand, but being in the southeast of that place that loves their guns, it missed me by 650 kilometers or so.
The skies over Montana were astounding. I remember the last major event that I saw was back in the early to mid 2000's... I even managed to get some great images this time, even though all I currently have is an iPhone. All I can say is, I love me some angry Sun!
That's what they all say then the relationship goes badly and then everyone is sorry! (j/k..only place I've ever seen the aurora was in ne montana back in the 70's)
You are braver than me, last time I got close to a turbine, I was fishing within an offshore wind farm. A security boat came out and gave me a hard time. They thought I has tied off on one. But I was sitting in the down tide eddy of the pylon running the trolling motor. We were about 6 or 7 miles out, an excellent days fishing. They are so huge when you get up close, amazing engineering.
They gave you a hard time? That's a little bit on the unacceptable side of interactions. Presumably you were there lawfully, so what is it to him? Moreover, security has pretty much no jurisdiction over anything outside private land and even then it's pretty much limited to "please leave". Did you make him leave in a huff? Yeah, for some reason, turbines are hit and miss when it comes to security. On the one hand, it's critical infrastructure, and on the other, it's simply a structure in a public place. There were no airspace restrictions here and I kept a reasonable distance from the blades themselves. One quick aerial orbit was all I wanted, because I just LOVE big engineering. I have been able to get real close to them as most of the site managers know me from my moonlight job. They do have cause to be sensitive though as the blades are quite fragile. I took this video for the news service a few years ago after a blade strike. I believe that it was a manufacturing defect that caused the blade to buckle and at the 6 o'clock position the blade collided with the tower. The result was catastrophic failure of the turbine. The unit detected the strike and the brakes engaged. Remarkable it was able to shut itself off really as the instability would surely have brought the whole turbine down. All it needed in the end was a new blade and repairs to the tower. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0cMJO2U29gg.html Tighter shot: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R7RvsFkO2L4.html The blade looks to be some sort of fibre laminate skin with some kind of resin over a glass carbon skeleton. I can even make out some wood sheeting! So interesting!
@@ErynKnight It's completely ok to fish withing the wind farm. You are not allowed to tie off on the structures. He was convinced we'd tied off because we were stationary. I think he left a little embarrassed, when I explained how an eddy current forms on the down tide side of rocks, islands and turbines. He did then try the you should not be so close but a wasn't having that. The local fishing club had been active during the consultation. We all knew what we could and couldn't do. We are allowed to anchor within the farm. I never fancied it, with what is probably an irrational fear of hooking onto a power cable. I know they were buried in a ten foot trench. It's a great spot for Tope and Bass fishing but it's quite exposed and sea is often choppy. As I recall it was a piping hot day and the sea was like glass. One of the few days where everything just seems to vanish and there is only the sea, the heat and the sun reflections from the water.
You really need to start talking more though. Your voice is soothing but fun. Should do long car drives and have a voice overlay of you just talking about anything 🙂🙂
Most of those roads look familiar, I don't think I've been been on the B roads north of the A635, were you using a torch to see any wildlife jumping out of hedgerows? I think I heard a 40mph road works sigh at 1:12:10!
Nothing so lovely, I'm afraid, I was looking for things that aren't supposed to be there. You definitely heard a sigh. It was because they left the VMS set to 40 even though it was clear (I can see the network on my tablet (there was a work crew there... 4 hours before (that left 3 hours ago))). It annoys me because false reporting signs make drivers less compliant. Non-mandatory signs are now, for the most part, completely ignored by drivers; a section of the A1 was reduced to 60, then to 50, then lane 3 closed, then further reduced to 30, over the span of 5 miles... for a "stranded vehicle" that had been moved the day before. Of course it was ignored by everyone, but imagine if there really was a stranded vehicle in lane 3...
@@ErynKnight I have seen the same thing on the M1, a few weeks ago they showed a nation speed limit sign on the VMS half way along the road works and many people sped up, not noticing the standard signs showing 50. I wonder how many people got caught by the speed cameras that day.
If the VMS shows an NSL sign then that applies until the next sign (or temporary sign) cancels it out. That's an absolute defence... assuming they have they proof (dash cam, witnesses, et cetera). As far as I'm aware, a sudden spike in speeding offences beyond normal causes an investigation and all issued 172 / NIPs will likely be cancelled. To be fair though, common sense should prevail as it did with you. You're in a roadwork zone, you've seen a few 50 signs, the NSL, unless accompanied with a confirmation temporary sign is probably an error (the temporary NSL works end sign should be before the VMS also). I'm proper boring, I know. ;)
You know, I used to loathe traffic. Now I remind myself "I'm not _stuck_ in traffic, I _am_ traffic". For some reason, that seems to work and now I just happily sit there and watch the world go by on the opposite carriageway. It's like the rain. I can't change it and wasting energy hating it is only really effecting myself.
Do you remember how it was during lockdown? It was like that all the way from J41 to J34 (S) and J35a (N) due to a cloure. I'm a responder and this was filmed as they were about to release both carriageways.
@@ErynKnight I didn't do any motorway driving then, I was either on furlough or working from home. But I do remember the A & B roads being clear of traffic.
It was a really strange time to drive. I drove everywhere as part of my various activities, it was like nothing I'd ever experienced before. So strange.
0:22 You need to get someone to rotoscope that 60 sign to warn of an alien invasion, e.g. a flying saucer lasering people, reupload and see if anyone notices.
I love fog but here in the central us we mostly just get some ground fog that doesn't last long first thing in the morning. When I lived in England I loved the fog.
@@johnarthur4555 They really are something else when compared with DAT and the like, just the power in the spooler alone is immense. The sound from it revving up to speed is totally awesome.
£5 per terabyte. The file system is still digital (LTFS). LTO is still being developed, and has never been phased out. It takes about an hour to write/read each tape though, but its automated. The unit with two drives is racked up with my Synology racks in a 36U cabinet. My use for these is mostly archiving RAW/Log video. It's currently at just over 0.8 petabytes (I never delete source files or production masters). For more readily accessible storage, I have four rackmount Synology boxes; one for my media library (TV shows, movies, music, et cetera), one as a document/file server, one running my home security, CCTV, and dashcam uploads (when my car is in range to dump the footage), and finally, another for syncing my phone for its weekly backup. Basically, I'm super boring and have too much free time XD
@@ErynKnight And here was me thinking it looked like an old jingle tape system, der! I was put off tape back up years ago. Bad experience left me with some data loss. I looked up LTO on wiki and realise I was using the wrong type of tape system. 18TB on an LTO9 tape is staggering. You've changed my opinion for which I am grateful.🥲 It's funny how long held views can blind you, learning something new is awesome. One of my favourite Event Horizon episodes was with Miguel Alcubierre. Hearing from him lay out the impracticalities of the drive was a little sad but knowing the truth is liberating. Have you watched The Three Body Problem? The reviews were poor but I really enjoyed it. I love how the character development didn't take second stage to the sci-fi. As far as super boring goes. You are chatting with the embodiment of super boring. Making documentaries sounds quite interesting. Not something many people would have the tenacity to be able to make a living from. Bon Scott once sang "It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll"
Were you thinking of the oldschool DAT / DDS tapes? I used to have an HP DDS drive that could store a whopping 20 gigglebeeps! It was plenty big enough to image my whole hard disk at the time, which was an 18.9GB Seagate with a rubber jacket. That drive was on the end of a SCSI chain; such memories! They were digital too, so maybe not? I know what you mean about storage fragility tho'-for the entry cost of LTO (drives alone can cost £1,000, while rackmount libraries can hit £10,000 easily), you'd expect piece of mind... Thankfully, my environment is suitable for such hardware, and y'know, I'm really... really... into really over-engineering my network... really... I'll take a photo of my rack in the morning... if I remember. Alcubierre was always a real-science-sci-fi hero of mine (huge Star Trek fan (autistic obsession, more like)), so being in that conferencec all with him was an absolute highlight of my career; I've admired him since my childhood. I am very lucky to get to meet my heroes. I haven't watched that, but I will look for it.
@@ErynKnight Yes, it was a scsi DDS drive I had the problem with. For some reason the data was spread across three tapes. Maybe I'd done an incremental or something. One of the tapes would not read which meant the whole archive was lost. It was taking nearly 24 hours to run a backup, I lost faith with tape and moved to multiple raid 6 NAS arrays configure to backup. Eventually virtualising with SANs and backup onsite to NAS and offsite with the line provider. 3 body problem is on Netflix, it's really well thought out and must have come from a very interesting mind. If they don't renew I will have to buy the books.
How strange, I was just wondering today when you would publish another video. I used to like walking in the fog when I was young, it felt like your own bubble of reality.
