What struck me was how hard it is for our culture - largely centered around imperatives of our economic lives - to evaluate the extending of grace, acceptance, education (etc) in a frame other than that of scarcity. Scarcity is a major factor that is driving us to create even more categories which allow exclusion from "resources" which makes them more valuable to those who control and accumulate them. There are things that need to be done simply because they define us a humans, and do not need rationalization in an economic or scarcity frame. That we have allowed the economic and merit based structures to intrude into all areas of our social structures and has not only resulted in fewer areas where selfless acts can be experienced, but shifts our cultural reaction to a frame of merit and value based on limited access. I love the idea of putting more emphasis on community college education that can be more broadly accessed to allow more people to understand these concepts that can start to shift the culture through wider adoption. Perhaps this greater exposure will start to shift our culture to one that acknowledges the importance of doing things that are not economic imperatives, but serves the more important imperative that should override econmic framing - acknowledging our humanity.

Hearing loss isn't going to always show up in a test that you normally do because hearing loss is in more subtle ranges and degrees then typical hearing tests. If it's neurological it may never pick it up. Hearing loss could be an occasional muffling of sounds, it can come and go, and it can be subtle inability to for instance to understand what someone is saying and having to repeat. Not all extensive damages in the brain can be picked up if they don't do the more intricate tests and sometimes it won't be picked up at all because we just don't have the sensitivity in testing equipment yet.
