This is why SF were my favourite 60s band. Their songs had a lightness and humour that other bands never had, and SF were the best musicians and song writers
Their last b side this one of The Universal. After that Marriott left. The remaining three teamed up with two ex Jeff Beck Group members and dropped the small. A reunion got underway in the mid 70s. However Ronnie Lane wouldn't join his replacement was Rick Willis. Didn't go down to well, Steve later rejoined Humble Pie, Kenny replaced the late Keith Moon as drummer for the Who.
It's a cover of the Rufus Thomas Stax single of 1964 but they definitely put their own stamp on it (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L27zytSBEmc.html)
Steve Cropper classic. Love that B3 growling organ in the mix. Jesus I remember as a schoolboy aged around 14 playing this before my first band in a few years later and still playing Hammond and guitar.
The Rickenbacker is so amazing here. Wonder what the lyrics are about though. Probably about guru Meher Baba ,Lane and Pete Townshend were associated with at the time .
I have never heard this before, it obviously owes a lot to Buddy Holly !! But it is a great record. Steve was a very talented man. I used hold all day rock festivals on August Bank Holiday Mondays at The King Billy pub in Northampton that I ran with my late wife in the 80s; they consisted of 7 local groups and a headliner; Steve was the headliner on the first one and he was just amazing. RIP Steve , gone but never forgotten
Was this from a TV show in which the lead vocal was live and the backing track a recording? Because the backing track was *exactly* like the studio version. Powerful singing, just the same.
A fantastic song to have been wasted on a B-side (A-side being "The Universal") and just shows you had they stayed together, how much further their songwriting and creativity could have developed beyond Ogden's. I love how this song combines their R&B, music hall elements, reflective/nostalgic lyrics and pop sensibility into one great track. It's a shame it was wasted on a B-side.
