There are 2 species in the Rutaceae family (which includes citrus) native to here in New Zealand which are called Melicope Ternata and Melicope Simplex. They look nothing like any other citrus besides when the fruits are unripe. The fruits are actually capsules which open up to reveal shiny black seeds. I know they are separated from the other citrus species you spoke of but I think they're neat! Also cool that Sichuan pepper is in the Rutaceae family as well and has relatives as far flung as the Americas! :)

3:39 Our species is H. sapiens, not H. sapien. That “s” doesn’t mean it’s a pluralized version of sapien. An individual human today would be called a Homo sapiens.

There is now some greater planetary science in that there was a huge solar/cosmic plasmatic event that happened (and the cause celebrity, disruption agent) at the end of the Glacier Age on the planet ~12,000 - 10,000 BCE. This event, like a huge coronal mass ejection (CME), was a huge and massive plasma tsunami that races across the planet. Scorch marks across the planet show evidence of widespread damage. Lithification (melted, glassified, and burned surfaces of felsic silicate granite) of stone statues and buildings appear in such places as the Egyptian Colossae, Easter Island Moi, and Peruvian/Chilean megalithic cities with scorched walls. This was a massive superheated and energy-energetic tsunami that virtually evaporated the glacial snow and ice instantly back into ions and particles, versus steaming and melting glaciers in an instant. Any meltwaters would be glacial flash floodings of immense volumes, and the rise of sea level from this planetary action. Much like an asteroid, or huge meteor, impacting the Earth, the impact site vaporized the geological impact zone. It is entirely this plasma tsunami, and its high energies (ionization, gamma rays, alpha/beta rays, x rays, UV A/B/C rays, etc.) could be the footprint for disrupted DNA mutations, in which differing species of fruit trees, nut trees, shrubs, berry vines and shrubs, plants, root veggies, tuber veggies, leafy veggies, viney veggies, etc. etc. could trace back their evolutionary DNA orogeny.

Excellent coverage. Not that I will remember most of it but I had no idea how these “common” fruits had evolved or been purposefully crossed to create what we enjoy today. Thank you for your scholarly dive into this little known topic.

Definitely learned some stuff here. Never realized that Australia had native citrus plants, and I remember when the "Bush Tucker " craze was going on with all the chefs were looking to get out of south west style cuisine. The only other thing I have to say is that I have always enjoyed the look of citrus fruits, especially when they are part of the decorations at a big banquet.

Volume sucks. It's interesting that many people who present themselves as "liberated" still have gender role expectations down deep; early programming hard to overcome. Another is door holding: it's a power move that is called chivalrous or gentlemanly in dating but in the business upper social circles it's definitely a power move with the alpha holding the door open. Watch a group of heads of state together or CEOs and they'll fight over it. Same with paying the check at a meal. Growing up in San Francisco during 1970s feminism you were likely to get scolded holding the door for a woman because they recognized all the subtle power dynamics involved. I taught my daughters to always bring money for half the check and to be suspicious of overly "gentlemanly" guys because it was about power. They are so sweet now but ultimately they want to own you. It's not that they are evil or even acting that way intentionally; just cultural programming.

Very interesting to see the link between citrus in Australia to SE Asia and Southern China, which parallels (perhaps not in time) the Denisovan gene present in Indigenous Australian, jn Papua, and parts of SE Asia. I thought cumquat was Asian in origin (but not sure why) and whilst I suspect mine a graft, gojng by the thorny tree grown frim seed, it is prolific with fruit. Seems to flower by the moon rather than season and rarely stops. Got so much marmalade and rum pickled fruit, there will be some left after I've gone. Transferred the tree frkm its pot at my childhood home to the ground here where i live below Mt Dandenong east of Melbourne, and the tree must be about 60 years old. Bees love it. Cockatoo dont like citrus, unlike chestnuts and walnuts, and Im okay with that.

🎉🎉🎉this is a fabulously researched and presented case for early hominins use and cultivation. I found this very fascinating as there is one citrus you mentioned ever so briefly the rough orange very popular in South East Asia and the Philippines where it's cultivated. I live in Montreal Quebec and one of my absolute fave restaurants makes a superb lemonade with it and its wonderful with bourbon
