Hello. I am planning to apply to PEAK program. I have read through the undergraduate degrees on the website. However, i don't quite understand how the degrees work. For example, if we chose to study Physics in Environmental Science, at the end, would we get an Environmental Science degree or a Physics degree?

Analysis of Lorde’s Performance in The Grammy ’s 2014 Overview If we analyze something, let’s analyze something with high quality. It is a top-class production from The Grammy’s, so I hope to learn a lot from this. This clip was done with at least 8 cameras, but for simplicity, I will arrange them into 5 tracks, in order of distance: Bird-eye view, Long shot, Full shot, Mid shot, and Close-up. Learnings On shooting Motion. While shooting, create a sense of motion with the camera. Pan it, zoom it, to make the scene interesting. Nonetheless, note that motion should be made gently, smoothly and slowly. Focus should be kept around guiding lines following the rule of thirds, so that the audience can catch the new focus with ease. There are meanings to a motion as well, for instance pulling in to introduce something or increase tension, pulling out at the end. Visualising the motion before shooting helps creating great shots. Configuration. Be consistent in terms of camera setting so the color stays the same. I have had painful experience editing clips with different settings, a pain to the eyes. Lighting becomes a very important factor in this aspect, stay on manual control so the camera does not misbehave when lighting condition changes, or get confused in difficult lighting conditions. Stage with tungsten and flourescent light is one difficulty, shooting against the light source is another. Framing. Frame the shots well, specifically Full shot covering head to toe inside the safe area (the 90% inside of the frame); Mid shot from waist up, and Close up from shoulder up. Photography skills apply, with extra considerations on Motion. On editing Transition. When to change a scene? Change amidst action. Imagine rows of bricks of a wall. Between two bricks, there is another brick above it. People take time to adapt to scene transition, like the space between two bricks. Give them something to hang on to and lead them to the next scene smoothly. In this case, let Lorde’s voice connect clips in transition: scenes are changed amidts a sentence. L cut and J cut are similar concepts, the audio is cut (changed) before or after the scene change, but not at the same time. In music videos, rhythm can also be a clue. Notice how the bass kick sometimes precedes a transition. Experience will help telling where the bricks are. Choosing scenes. Which scene to show? Assume all the scenes are working (I usually brutally dismiss all faulty scenes to start with). Making movie is essentially telling stories. It is up to the style of the story teller for the effect, therefore conventions are only guidelines. One convention is to build tension like climbing a mountain. Start with simple things, introduce them one by one to the scene. Let audience recognize what is going on, what setting there is, who are the main characters, what kind of feeling it is, from what perspectives they are going to see things from. Use longer shots, take longer intervals between transitions, so as to keep the tension low and save for the climax later. Then build up the tension with closer shots, briefer transitions, more dramatic angles, lighting, colors. When the climax is reached, it is like standing on top of a mountain, everything is breathtakingly beautiful. Now, take it easy and resolve to the end. Going downhill always seem faster than going up, and similar should movies be. “Editing is 70% about rhythm, what you are showing and the rate you show it, like a dance.” - Walter Murch, a master on editing. For this clip, the peaks of the song at around “be your ruler” and “we’ll never be royals” are marked with the close up shots, built up with gradual transitions from full shots to mid shot. After that, the tension is relieved with less exciting scenes (focus on drummer-not main character, shifting to a longer shot). Intro and Outtro are done with pulling in and out respectively. Of course, having multiple peaks, ending right at the climax, not having any tension until the end, are all variations in handling the flow. Experiment and develop your own style. In this case, I think analyzing literature helps a lot. On lighting Lighting is directly related to how a movie look. Analyzing how lighting is coordinated in the clip to influence the flow of the clip is a good source of learning. Mood. Lighting certainly influence the mood of a movie. The low intensity at the start, then pushed up slowly to build tension. At the peaks, “our rule our rule”, tungsten light creates a heavenly mood and a little pause in rhythm. Number of lights, Intensity, colors are all factors to consider in lighting. Rhythm. Lighting is great to visualize the rhythm. Notice how the the first verse of the song, light is in rhythm with the drum “bass bass bass, snare”. Light has their rhythm and motion as well, that is why it is an extremely important element of every stage. One thing I am not able to explain yet is the reason why tungsten light and flourescent light is mixed on Lorde, it is hard to get her real skin color. Sum up There are still many more things to learn from a top class production like this, but I need to experiment more to make sure I am writing the right things. For examples, I guess they are using a combination of dolley and steady cam, but not sure how those are arranged to achieve desired effects. Still, I am looking forward to dissect more and learn more, as well as advices from others. So much for 4 hours of repeatedly watching a 4 minute clip.
