I never got an allowance, and my grandmother's idea of sending me money in a birthday card was to iron a dollar bill. My parents thought chores were something one did as one's fair share of the chores. But they also posted jobs on the refrigerator. I remember the highest-paying one was 50 cents to pull all the dandelions in the front yard. (Today's melt value for two quarters from then is $11.64, which isn't too bad for a 6 year-old. Coin value would be higher. I wish I had all those quarters and dimes today!) Key thing being, we were taught that what we earned belonged to us, to spend as we liked (didn't mean we could eat candy instead of dinner). We naturally understood that money was earned and it belonged to the person who earned it, so if there was a way to return it to them, we did so. It's easy to avoid temptation if you respect your money and hard work and the rights we all share,. We know how it feels to get something back that we value.

Wow. My parents each bought a $2,000 whole life policy when they married in 1950. Dad's was turned in when they divorced, but Mom kept hers but had stopped paying on it. When she passed in 1999 I called Met Life and one of their agents came out and gave me a check for about $8,000. I'm glad she didn't get taken in the way this poor man was taken.

When life is ridiculous, everything in it becomes the same ending in additional layers of tragedy and trauma. Illiteracy is not eradicated by the change in country. It is carried and implemented again and again, UNLESS there is a choice to do better and gain wisdom! It IS choice and when people fail to make that choice and continue doing nonsense, I cannot feel the pity I wish I could.
