Less power creep and fewer options just made the game simpler. The skill ceiling really wasn't that high, which is one of the reasons why PKing was popular. It was accessible. These days there's just so much going on that the average player really has no clue what's going on half of the time.
It's possible they are only doing this in fear of facing legal repercussions because a lot of what they were doing violates specific laws varying by country.
Mouses back then had a trackball underneath, the internet speeds weren't at all great, you had to make sure no one used the phone or else the internet went off, there was honor when pking, and on top of that no F-keys. This is pretty good for that time.

The best RS pking period was during bounty hunter days before free trade when everyone was doing hybrid pking for no good reason and you could take 3 business days to do 8 way switches and still stack mfers out because everyone was shit 😂
