i watched this show so many times as a teen and only as an adult did i really understand "that he wouldnt need them anymore" meant i always thought oh he lost interest" but jesus christ thats dark
I have the crazy theory that D&D is a symbol for the show Community itself, Fat Neil is Dan Harmon and Pierce is Chevy Chase and the episode mirrors the sense of competition Chevy instilled on Dan, which Chevy took personal while Dan always viewed as a game. And hence, Chevy learned very very little. And Dan Harmon went on to live (and have success while at it).
I absolutely love sitcoms and i love even more rpg's!!!! The first two minutes of the video already made me so excited to wathc it. I had a blast watching this episode without ever seeing community! Awesome video!!!
This too is my favourite episode of Community, I’m so glad it got shoved onto my feed and I’m so so so upset that someone somewhere decided it was “racist” because Chang used some body paint and now the largest and most easily accessible streaming platform doesn’t host the episode. I’m glad we have things like plex and I hope as these streaming services get more and more greedy people will start voting with their wallet. Foxtel is dead, Netflix is next.
It's a good episode and I'll agree on that but Abed is very problematic as a DM this episode. He's not emphasizing fun for the players, he never uses the DM feature of fudging your rolls, he rolls for his players, he doesn't let Troy do a different action after telling him his additional notes have no effect and forces them into sexual encounters they specifically stated they were not comfortable with, I think Abed is a better DM in the second DND episode.
While this episode is one of the best episodes of community, it's also referenced so many times later on through the series which makes some things confusing.
I totally forgot about this episode, i rewatched community and when i got to the d&d episode with Jonathan banks and felt something was missing. Found a random article today talking about the episode and i've rewatched it like 3 times today 😂
Yeah, Chevy was a dick in real life as well. I've watched conversations where he is absolutely certain the reason no-one likes him is because he's such a great actor. LOL
Its such a tragedy that Pierces character wasnt able to be fully realized because of Chevy Chase. We really could have gotte one of the most developed characters ever.
Shame Chevy didn't 'get it' but he is a far left Marxist IRL, so all the racist jabs, he didn't realize that is how real friends talk and that Pierce was growing out of his sheltered Dad's influence to be more accepting of his social circle. I get that he didn't want to be offensive, but great comedy has that 'Oh no, you didn't just say that' followed by the punchline to negate that sentiment.
I’ve seen this video a few times, but I come back to it because this episode is also my favorite in all of community. Possibly in all of sitcom in general. Literally for my wedding, all of the groomsmen stayed at my house for the weekend and we watched this episode over and over. Every time someone would come over that hadn’t seen it, we would instantly put it on again. Truly one of the best times of my life
I love this show and I love this episode. But as someone who grew up hiding my interest in D&D because it hadn't yet made it into the cool level of geekness it is today, the episode leans into every stereotype trope about D&D (some of which are earned) and while it shows off the show exactly as you say, it sort of shows off D&D in a less pleasant light for the uninitiated (pun intended)
