I am putting up some videos in relation to the processing of firewood using handtools. They are made during the course of work and for that reason they are more than just demonstrations. l keep the mobile (cell) phone running for as long as possible and for obvious reasons the videos are extensively edited. No fancy technology is involved. I have an interest in this area, and I want to share some of my thoughts and ideas on the subject. Of course, I am also looking for feedback from anybody out there with a similar interest. Thanks for looking and we will see where this brings us.
Ben, I got this address directly from the Muller company, a few years ago, giving the details of a company in Carlisle that carry their products. Check their website. I'm sure that if you ring their number, they should be able to help you. Be specific about what you want. The Muller catalogue number for the 5kg maul with ash handle is 0257 50; and the hickory handled item is 0259 50. CARR´S BILLIGTON SAFETY KINGSTOWN BROADWAY KINGSTOWN IND. EST. This video brings back memories , I split a few winters worth of elm a good few years back and it's tough stuff alright! My maul just bounced off it, I borrowed a 4 ton hydraulic splitter which didn't even leave a mark on some of it! A lot had to be done with sledge & wedges but I have to say my Fiskars X27 was very effective also. If I never have to split a piece of elm again, I won't shed a tear about it!
Michael, God bless you for this unusually helpful video, the factual and humble way you demonstrate technique and share your experience, and all the helpful replies in these comments.
Hello Michael. This brings back 'happy' memories. Yes, I split nothing but Elm for two years when I lived in Yorkshire because a lot of dead trees came down between 1987 and 1989. Swinging a 3 kilo maul hour after hour was indeed a tough workout. I also tried one of those twisted 'grenade' wedges which helped on the stumps. On some stumps I would cut vertically with a chainsaw. After 2 years I had my elbows strapped up for a while as they were very painful. Well, I got over it and still swing the same maul today, sadly I do not get to burn the old Elm here in Canada though. Good to see you again, Chris
Thanks Jake. Yes, there are plenty of armchair experts out there. Keep going with the videos. They're very informative. This is a more scenic view of my cousin's place. It can be beautiful in the Summer, but the east wind would 'shave' you in Winter. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hGKOBhfDueM.html
I have two old car tires on top of a large block that are screwed down. Load it up with all the small blocks and smack away. The best thing is you dont have to fetch the pieces.
I'm impressed, Sir. I do this work and, yeah, everybody has his own way of doing it but, regardless, you're going to get those difficult pieces. You stuck with it and you conquered. All the best.
Those were some good bounces, and yeah can remember that from a time well passed for me now. Still feel my mouth tense up just thinking about wood splitting. Especially after my dad refused a power splitter because "hand splitting builds character". Built blisters and a lot of grudge at the time. There was also a lot of not good natured picking at about 'building muscles and not being fat.' the man also reminded of at every opportunity.
From my experience, trying to hit it not in the middle but close to the edge is better. And only from that side where I see the biggest cracks if any. Also, if 1st hit was unsuccessful, then the ax swing should have a higher amplitude.
Khoroshiy sovet. Razdelochnaya koloda, kotoruyu ya ispol'zuyu, imeyet shirinu 121 sm. Vertikal'nyye kuski brusa, kotoryye vy vidite, privincheny k nemu. Spasibo za prosmotr.
Great job Mick. I enjoy your videos. Could you do a video talking about being self sufficient in fire wood? I'm sickened about the Ash die back. Could you let us know your thoughts on that? Go raibh míle. Kieran in Kerry
Folks don’t do this at home. None one should be anywhere this close to you. Also think about it no one should be in front of you in case the maul slips out of your hand or the head of the mail comes off or the wood bounces…. Just keep a safe distance
