Our dog developed IMHA 1 month ago, our vet mentioned last week possibly stopping meds if his organ function looked good this week. About how long should he be on prednisone and blood clotting meds? 2, 3 months?

My Maltise had a lump removed from her ovary tubes, but also has one in neck thats growing. She cannot swallow or sleep well. The Dr said dangerous to remove due to location. Is there a medication i can help her with other than inflammation meds? He scoped her stomach and this thing is starting to block her pipes, what can we do, she is like our child in the family. Please any ideas?

Brings back some terrible memories. Our Cavalier passed away at age 5 during a violent seizure. They progressively get worse and more extreme as time goes by. Do your Dog and family a HUGE favor and put the animal down if this starts to happen. Your delusional if you think it will get better because it won't. Your hearts will be ripped out and your Dog will suffer tremendously. You will also spends $1,000's of dollars trying to change fate which is impossible. Sorry to be so blunt but we made a big mistake trying to keep our little Cav alive for our own selfish reasons.

I have 7yo terrier mix with idiopathic epilepsy for 2+ years; other diseases ruled out via MRI, spinal tap, tick/ bacterial titers- Neuro vet recommended hydrolyzed food- after 2 years and poor control, now have switched back to home prepared (Steve Brown book) and adding MCT oil - wonderful that seizures are less often, less severe- clusters 1-3 rather than 3-6 in 24 hrs every 2-4 weeks; I have a quick look seizure table I devised via MS word...I'd be glad to share in case you or students are interested-just for information. It's the one I share with my epi dog's internist at 6 month visits. Meds have remained same for past year; Thanks to you for addressing the "nutrition" puzzle piece to this disease. I'll keep on keeping my records but MCT oil seems to have helped here in last 6 months. Thanks CR & Terrier Mix, Maze PB 45mg BID, K Bro 125mg qd, Keppra 500mg q 8 hrs, CBD tincture BID, MCT 1t qd, home prepared diet- Steve Brown's Ancestral Diet crob112@gmail.com

How new is the proBNP test in the veterinary world (i.e. is the typical small animal clinic likely to offer it in house or would it be sent to an outside lab)? Thanks in advance for you help!

The problem you describe could be due to inflammation or infection in the mammary gland OR could be associated with the growth of a mass or cancer involving the mammary gland. We recommend that you consult with your veterinarian.

Is it common for the effects of the rigid face to be permanent if treatment is not started soon enough?
@VetVine
@VetVine 8 лет назад
+1122jadeblahblahblah Sorry to hear about your dog's problem. We hope he's going to be okay. Obviously, without actually examining your dog, it's very difficult to advise you on what to expect. If he's under the care of a specialist, he is in good hands. It would be unusual for his face to become permanently rigid. Hopefully, with treatment he'll improve. Keep us posted.

My dog just got diagnosed with tetanus and I'm very scared. he can walk but his face is very rigid and he has trouble swallowing. My vet said his face may be stuck like that forever because it has already been so long. Our previous vet that gave him surgery (which is where he got the tetanus from) kept misdiagnosing him so it took about a week until we got to a specialist. How good are his chances of having permanent face damage?

My pup that is 9 months has has pneumonia on and off for months now. The first time he was about 3 months. I told the vet he was reverse sneezing quite a bit and had a runny nose and sounded congested. He said oh it's probably nothing let it run its course. So I waited until the next appointment because Gunner was still receiving booster shots every 3 weeks. I went back and told him again that Gunner has a runny nose and now a very low sounding raspy thing going on when he breathes. Like a lion. He gave me an antibiotic and didn't check out anything. I gave Gunner the week of antibiotics and it sort of helped, not really. So I said I was done taking him there so we scheduled with a different vet. I took Gunner into his new vet and told her what was going on. She listened to his lungs and said it sounded like he possibly had fluid. She said it seems to most likely be pneumonia. She gave me a week worth of clavamox. I gave it to him twice a day for 10 days. It went away and yet again came back. At this point he was 6 months old. So I had to take him back and that time the vet took an x- Ray which was $217 by itself, he did have a bit of a fog in his right lung but she said it wasn't bad. He had some kind of little finger nub on his heart? She said usually it is seen when a dog has a arrhythmia but she did not hear one in him at all. So she prescribed another 10 days of clavamox and an antidiarrheal. The vet bill was $402!! For an x- Ray and two antibiotics. I almost cried because my husband and I did NOT have that. I strictly told them I had $300 that day in my account and that's all I had to work with. So they let me pay half. Then other half in 2 weeks. So I give him the antibiotics and he's all better yay. But now my husband and I are doing well financially so we decided to save a rescue dog. We picked her up from a kill shelter and welcomed her home. She went to the vet yesterday and has no parasites in her stool, no symptoms of being sick, normal temperature, she is vaccinated with a 5 way and rabies and also got her bordatella yesterday. She is 4 months old about. We don't know her birthday as she was abandoned. I have been keeping the new dog and Gunner separate because exactly what I feared. His cough is back. I just woke up to let the 4 month puppy out and he is breathing in and it sounds like a lion and then he gags to cough up whatever the white foamy stuff is. I'm so upset because yes we can afford boosters and dog food and toys and treats, but we cannot afford to take him to the vet and have another $400 vet bill just for his pneumonia to come back again! I'm so upset. Please if anyone took the chance to read this, help? I don't know what to do. I won't just let him be sick. I will call the vet tomorrow and tell her. But I already know she will say to bring him in for X-ray and it's too expensive and she never looks into his pneumonia like how he got it or what bacteria is causing it. And her costs are very high for pretty much everything. A fecal exam is $56 and just for him to be seen is $42. Please anyone help guide me in the direction I should go. I love Gunner so much he is our first dog as a married couple and the best dog I've ever had he is so smart and well behaved he doesn't deserve to go through this.

My almost 13-year-old male neutered cat was diagnosed with congestive heart failure secondary to hyperthyroidism in September 2014. His heart and chest were tapped to remove fluids followed by radioactive Iodine treatment. Immediately after his hospitalization, he was put on Pimibendan, Clopidogrel, Spironolactone and Benazapril and I have to say, he was almost a brand new cat! Last week I noticed he seem to be in some respiratory distress. The veterinarian once again tapped his lungs and extracted 100 mL of fluid but also noticed a mass around his heart. I realize this could be the beginning of the end for my little guy (he's actually a huge 22 lbs), so while I monitor him day to day with his breathing, he was put on furosemide (sorry if I spelled that wrong), and he's breathing much more comfortably. Thanks for this info. He never stopped taking his Pimobendan and I'm always grateful for the work animal doctors do to help lengthen the lives of our pets!

We have a 12 yr old Springer Spaniel, Dolly. Dolly was 3 yrs old when we had her spayed. I wish I had known this then. She was 9 when she had a swollen mammary gland that was not cancerous. In a matter of two months she has another tumor that has grown to cover almost her entire abdomen and is huge! She has seen her vet several times. Her vet told us that it's 80% likely to be cancerous. Her tumor looks almost bruised. We have decided that surgery would be too difficult on her and we know that she will likely only have another tumor later. She is completely healthy otherwise. Heart, lungs, teeth, guns ect all appear healthy according to vet. I am not going to let her suffer but I do want her to enjoy her life for as long as she can. Your opinion would be extremely appreciated. Thank you for sharing this video.
@VetVine
@VetVine 10 лет назад
Sorry to hear about Dolly. It never hurts to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. A veterinary specialist in oncology (cancer care) and/or surgery may be helpful to you. It's critical to have a diagnosis (determine whether it is malignant or not) to be able to provide a prognosis for her.

Is it possible that there is a development of pus in the area ? my pet had developed a lump which the vet then told to apply ointments to control the growth...anyways...wid the many incorrect diagnosis by 2 vets she now has a lump which developed pus nd became wat the lab at the end had...yet after continuous draining for a few days it went back to normal...but i see it developing pus yet again...the vet said it's close to her heart so cnt operate...she's 9 years old...is it true that it cannot be operated ? pls advice !!!!!!
@VetVine
@VetVine 10 лет назад
Drainage (pus) from the mammary gland area can occur with infection, inflammation and/or with cancerous changes (as you have seen in this video). For a veterinarian to diagnose the problem, a specimen needs to be examined (cytology or biopsy) to look, microscopically, and see what's going on in the tissue. The mammary glands are external to the body, so there is no danger to the heart itself (which is internal), to obtain a sample. Hope this helps!

so i guess i can go ahead with a surgery 'coz i don't think medicines can cure her... Thankyou so much for ur promt reply...i'm really worried sick 'bout my baby ! glad to know it's nothing related to the heart !
@VetVine
@VetVine 10 лет назад
***** Your vet will be the best judge about what to do next. First, they will probably want to do blood tests to assess her overall health. Based on that, they'll recommend further testing of the lump - whether it's a biopsy or surgical removal. Hard to say without seeing your pet, but your vet will guide you. Good luck!
