Just to clarify... Limestone Coping around a SALT WATER Pool properly sealed is okay? Want the saltwater erode the Limestone? I have been given so many conflicting answers. I dont know what to do. I am not a fan of the limited colors of Travertine. Please help! Thank you
@armstoneau
@armstoneau Год назад
@nicoledavis6116 Not all limestones are suitable to be used around salt water pools. At Armstone We do a salt test to know this. Also sealing doesn't make the stone salt proof. Risk is always there but to choose a stone that is much denser will eliminate the risk of deterioration of your coping.

So its very porous like travertine. I know someone who had travertine pavers laid on his outdoor patio. We are in Pa. and get cold winters. When water is trapped in the porous pavers such as travertine, they crack and get ruined. I suppose limestone is the same.

Is all travertine likely to be P3? I'm looking at some for around a pool that says it's P5 wet pendulum slip rating. Should I believe this? The more I read the harder my choice becomes, as there is variability in information provided. It's hard to know what is "correct" (and possibly there is some bias in what different companies want to sell you).
@armstoneau
@armstoneau 2 года назад
Hi Frances, simply ask them to send you slip certificate. Its common for Premium tumbled travertine is P3. P4 travertine exists on the market but it usually very porous and absorbed water hence why its P4, the water doesnt sit on the surface longer which makes it to be P4. Being that soft means will stain easily or crumble when reacting with pool water, like chlorine or salt. P5 Travertine will have to be sandblasted which is so rough that wouldn't look like travertine
@auntybeebee
@auntybeebee 2 года назад
@@armstoneau Thanks for the reply. Now I'm even more concerned about how to tell what I am getting, as your information is completely the opposite of what I've been told. I have been dealing with a tile company specialising in pool tiling (both porcelain and natural stone options). The travertine sample tile they have given me is very smooth, not rough at all. The printed info sheet /glossy brochure says it's P5 travertine. I can't figure out how to send you a photo of the sheet so will transcribe the information here: Finish: Natural Edge and Unfilled Maintenance: Requires sealing. Seal with penetrating sealer to make cleaning easier. Use pH neutral cleaners. Do not use acid to clean. Slip Rating (Wet Pendulum): This tile has a P5 slip rating in the (V) pendulum classification which is the highest wet pendulum rating available under the current standards. (For pool surrounds, a minimum of P4 is required). Why choose Silver Travertine: Silver Travertine contains a mix of light and medium silver and brown coloured tiles. Often called Platinum Travertine, this material is widely used outdoors and occasionally indoors. Unfilled Travertine has natural holes in the surface adding texture to the finish and a rustic appearance. Some clients instruct the tile layer to in-fill some of the larger holes at the time of grouting. Silver Travertine is hard wearing and is natural colour variation hides marks very effectively. It is very cool underfoot so ideal to use in any climate. It offers high slip resistance. I liked the look of it, and the fact that is it cool underfoot (the pool will be in direct sunlight for almost the entire day so I didn't want a lot of heat or glare). I did comment that it felt smooth, but was reassured that it wasn't going to be slippery. The more I look online, the more I find it impossible to tell whether travertine is a viable pool surrounds option or not. Many sites seem to say that it is fantastic, including this company I am dealing with. It's quite expensive, so I want to be sure that I'm not going to be ripping it all up and replacing it.
@armstoneau
@armstoneau 2 года назад
Did you get the slip certificate ?
@auntybeebee
@auntybeebee 2 года назад
@@armstoneau I'm not quite sure what you mean by a slip certificate. Is it a piece of official documenation? I did get in touch with them. I told them what you had said. This was the reply they gave me: "Thank you for your enquiry. All our Travertine is tested for a wet barefoot and rated at P5 slip rating. Obviously there can be a differing levels within the P5 rating but we sell 1000’s of square metres of Travertine a year and never have a problem. I always say to customers - it’s smooth not slippery. It has microscopic etching that you can’t see or feel - but that’s what grips your feet." Perhaps I can ask them for some specific "official" documentation, if that's what the slip certificate is... Thanks again for your help.
@armstoneau
@armstoneau 2 года назад
Yes it is peace official document shows the slip test. it's a wet pendulum test that measures the grip strength of the stone when its wet. At Armstone we provide them to our clients if they ask and that is the proof. Where are you based? pop in to our showroom ill show you very similar stone like travertine which is non slip and doesn't have the cavities like travertine.

Thank you for the very informative video! If the travertine (or actual limestone) pavers have been laid already on sand (only), can we now grout the seams... to prevent mold build-up? Filling those joints with sand seems to be useless, as it washes off quickly, each time it's reapplied...
@armstoneau
@armstoneau 2 года назад
Hi Vany, I am glad the video was helpful. If you grout them with cement base it will crack from the grout joints as the base of the pavers is soft sand. what you can do is to grout with silicon base sand which will fill up the gaps and still be flexible enough to not crack from the grout joints but unfortunately this type of grout lasts for about 1-1.5 year

When grouting travertine for outdoor pavers, do you recommend a certain brand of grout. Also, do you seal the travertine paver before grouting or after? I have seen advice both ways. Thanks!
