Paul Allott just casually sticking his Rover 300 keys straight into the pitch on a good length on middle stump. Thought it was just a 12th man joke but there you go!

I would have been 24 at the time of this footage. Remember this era well - Brian Lara, Dermot Reeve, Keith Piper et al.

OK Mr. Illingworth, what do you consider a very big score indeed? Even back then, I would say anything north of 300 would classify which would mean 8 or 9 an over for the remaining 25 overs. Impossible with the batsmen they had.

230+ would always be competitive then.
@terranceparsons5185

4 in 40 minutes of batting. In a one day game. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 unless of course the other batsman made 40! Probably why it took 30+ overs to creep up to 100, at least 70 to 80 short of today's expected number of runs.
@user-qt3dg3qn6x

So what, better matches then. In the 1980's, exactly half the finals finished in yhe last over, how nany people can remember finals from the last 10 years. Not only that, all the Test players played so we got a better standard. These days, bowlers are just fodder and it is too dull to see batsmen being helped to score more snz quicker.

Ah, the days when the one day finals actually meant something to the ECB (and BBC) and were big occasions at Lord's. Long before we were saturated with too many competitions and the truly awful 'Hundred'. I went to one of the 1984 semi-finals at Headingley, where Warwickshire beat Yorkshire in a high scoring close match.
@pauljohnson4539
@pauljohnson4539 Год назад
The ECB didn't come into effect until 1997 (it was the old Test & County Cricket Board (TCCB) back then) and it was after the summer of the following year when they booted the BBC into touch and awarded the live cricket rights to Channel 4 and Sky.

I was a fresh faced fourteen year old then and remember Peter West (bought a copy of his autobiography from a charity shop in Scarborough the following year). Flannelled Fool and Muddied Oaf was the title. Cricket has always been my favourite game - the sound of leather on willow is bliss!

How rimes have changes. At 102-3 in the Warwks innings the commentator remarks “it could have been a very big score”. 103 in 32 overs is a four day score these days. At the same rate the outcome would be about 170.
@user-qt3dg3qn6x
@user-qt3dg3qn6x Год назад
But the batting side would expect to score quicker towards the end. I preferred one-day cricket then, no 'PowerPlay' nonsense and batsmen had to work for their runs.and counties could still score quickly. A year later, Warwickshire scored 110 off the last 10 overs of a Natwest game v Surrey.

Why was John Abraham's made Man of the Match?He made nought with the bat and didn't bowl at all! I suppose he must have fielded brilliantly...😊

Vantheman12 3 It was quite ridiculous...and I'm a Lancashire supporter...it is no different to awarding a football manager Man of the Match for giving a great half-time team talk and making some clever substitutions...😋 It was all very embarrassing...😙 By the way,I meant Abrahams not Abraham's...the curse of predictive writing...!😚😋

Ah yes, the 80's when hordes of gormless and drunken fools thought it a good idea to charge onto the pitch to jostle the players and steal things. Glad that no longer happens.

At the end of the game as the ball is bowled there are still some policemen escorting some fans from the outfield. Then when the winning run is scored the batsmen just leg it for the pavilion without even attempting to cross. Still, Lanky won and that’s all that matters. Bob Willis’s comments at the end are curmudgeonly. He moans about the state of the pitch but really Warwickshire batted poorly and lost wickets after the demons from the pitch had gone. Lovely to hear that Neil Fairbrother was being tipped as a very good hound player.
