The maths is wrong. It has to be multiple of three plus two.. there is not a single chain left at the end otherwise.

If you cut your curves out with pinking shears your curves might lay flatter...Haven't tried it myself but I got the idea from clipping around curves to make them lay flatter in my sewing.
