Great video!!! I will shortly get d lab 850/180 wing , . ls the 82 slim mast short for speed runs? ok for you it seems ok but maybe the water is very flat?
What is the trick to go more downwind? I feel like when I try to go fast it just keeps cranking upwind. Pushing like 50 km/h and it barely wants to go downwind (I think it might have to do with my harness lines though. Feels like the point of balance is too far to the back so I cant open my wing properly). Do you steer it downwind with your body or your wing?
@@obvioustrash7833 in sailing terms it's broad reach I said downwind to simplify it but it's not really correct. You push through your front foot to steer the board away from the wind and power the front of your wing to gain speed. I wouldn't use harness as it's really sketchy because any gust can send you flying and you don't want to be hooked in at that speed. Canting the board (leaning) is important for stability. It's very counter intuitive at first but you just need to force yourself and it will start making sense.
@@dengordo yep sounds right. I am jelaus of you guys when there is 8knots and you can go in and fly and i have to wait until wind gets stronger to enter the water 🤣
I have a going fuse that started stripping after slowly wearing from occasional wiggle. You use anything to secure the helicoil in place? Or is it a tight enough fit compared to the screws?
@@youdigsurf haha thanks 🙏 it should definitely help getting quicker on the foil but I think there are other variables to be faster like time on the water which I'm lacking as weekend foiler having no wind most of the weekends.
@@elliottaylor8344 Yeah, at 15 it starts getting scary, than 20 even scarier, 25 feels super scary, anything over is on the edge. Just keep pushing to get used to that feeling and it won't be that scary after some time.
@@dengordo if you could get your hands on the duotone daytona the old kite foil your likelihood of breaking 30 would be a lot higher, its basically a copy of the mikeslab bullet 3 also to help you go faster I recommend a slingshot technique, sail higher to the wind towards the gust as as it hits then wait a few second and bear away, that moment as you turn away should be very fast and help increase your top speed, my next speed goal is currently 35 kn.
@@opfoils I've heard about Daytona but didn't know it was copied from ML. It was quite hard to slingshot on that day as gusts were not strong enough and lots of wind holes. What foil are you on?
How can you get away with just one? 80% of time I'm on 7-6m, rarely weather for 5 and 4. My wife uses the same sizes as me +-0.5m (learning) at the same time so we ended up with full quiver. But now we have only 3 wings left for 2 of us as I'm transitioning to another brand🤦♂️
From what I've heard apparently it's harder to learn from a low dock but it's still better than nothing. I've tried XV2-1700 with S400 stab but it had way too much lift even right at the back of the mast track so I'm using the Duotone 2145 as it's a more predictable.
Hi, things have changed a bit over a year. But mid length boards are the latest trend in wingfoil racing because they accelerate better. Something that can float you if the wind drops but it depends on conditions and skills. For course racing a slightly bigger foil for better upwind performance, for slalom - the smallest foil you can get up on in given conditions. I can't recommend a particular brand as it depends on availability in your region but ideally try at demo events or buy a second hand.
Thanks! You're lucky to have a dock like yours as you see here only 1.5 step is possible and a lot of buoys under dock in other places. That was demo day and good opportunity to try gear for free 😅
I'm 82kg and 1250 is my light wind foil. My wife uses 1700 as she's learning but it's a bit too big for me, only when it's almost no wind below 8 knots. I'd go for XS-940 for stronger winds, it's my favourite foil for almost any conditions. Maybe X-1050 but I've never tried it.
@@dengordo thanks for your opinion, i didn’t consider going so low on area yet, i was thinking about hglide 1050 but its not available, neither x1250, you make me reconsider my choices 😂
@@MrGuzowski Takoon foil sizes are a bit confusing because with XS-940 I can get up in 10-12 knots on 7-6m wing and get to speed up to 25 knots in strong winds. It's the best foil they have for my weight. But now I use HS-700 mostly in strong winds as a race foil. I wouldn't go for H-1050, it's more downwind foil and I personally didn't like it. X-Glide V2 foils are really good for progression. But 1250 is still quite slow for stronger winds in my opinion.
Wow very fast! How long do you recommend to have the harness lines for going fast when hooked in? (BTW: Fastest guys at Defi Wing have average speed of 57 kph for full race of more than 20 minutes!)
Thanks! It's very tricky with harness lines in gusty conditions but I believe the foil can make a huge difference. Some are super stable in gusts and no problem using harness. I feel like I can push more through the harness but crashing at that speed is something I'm really scared of and my foil reacts instantly which doesn't help.
In terms of length of harness lines I noticed at DefiWing guys were using very long ones looks like over 30" and stance like in IQfoil very low. I prefer mine shorter around 26"-28" to have the wing closer to me for more stability.
It's very unstable and didn't help at all. People were falling on it when I was trying to take off. Far from your progression but I'm getting my pump foil gear now as I can't wing anymore due to elbow injury
@@dengordo its not cool getting old, my dockstart buddy got injured, i have something that fuck my foot when i try to run tho i can still wing and surf foil probably dock for short time but that anyying hope you will recover soon had an injury that got fixed with a lot and lot of progressive load but as we getting , it’s will happen more often , i workout almost everyday to prevent that …
@@youdigsurf well it's not just age. I was pushing hard during 4 hours on a sinker board chasing 30 knots of speed on super gusty lake being overpowered most of the time and overdone it. It's called tennis elbow injury. It sucks as I was preparing for the championships.
Love it! I’m assuming everyone here can already foil, but dock starts are a whole different animal. Please show a follow up video when everyone is killing it!
Yeah, most of us are confident wingfoilers but this was a surprise for us. Actually jumping on a moving pump board from unstable mega SUP was tricky and we gave up after an hour because the water was still cold. One boy actually managed to do it after 3 hours of trying. I'll post it later.
Thanks for this great video. I have the same fuselage and problem as you. I ordered a helicoil kit M6x1. I didn’t realise the x1 meant the length is 6mm. so I assume using one on both sides will not be enough since the fuselage is 22mm deep. I believe the next size up is x1.5 so 9mm - although using 2 will still be less than 22mm - do you think that will work? I assume I can’t use M6x2 as that would be 24mm - thanks!
Thanks! M6x1 means diameter of 6mm and a pitch of 1mm which is standard for M6. The length of the insert doesn't depend on the pitch. 2x 6mm long ones theoretically should be enough to make connection strong again, just insert them at both ends and not deep inside for the screw to hold onto. I'm not a professional, but this is what I'd do. Good luck!
@@dengordo Thanks - yes you're right i meant the second number which indicates length M6x1x1 and M6X1x1.5 etc..(from what I've read X1 means same length as diameter etc.. you had 2 x 10mm inserts which I think would be a tighter grip on the screw
It's very gusty reservoir and getting up on a sinker was challenging so 5.5 wing was perfect. Also I was speed training and did 29 knots on that day so had to be well powered up
Thanks! Hard handles or boom help with control and provide rigid connection with the wing but it doesn't affect speed. Soft handles can be easier on your hands in gusts. To go fast you need a small foil and a stiff wing with tight canopy, board doesn't matter but smaller is better and a enough wind of course 🙌
@@user-zk8ix9xv4m great! I hope Glide 190 will work for you but I use old S450 with this foil or perhaps Glide 220 but I don't have it yet. But I know a lot of people who use 190 stab with it and it works for them.
@@dengordo hope so. This is my second season. I studied on a massive slingshot I84 foil with a 3.3 aspect . So I expect a lot of new fillings with XGlide
