I think I was 9 the first time I saw this on a rented VHS, in 1989, and it really modernized vampires in my mind. Even with the mullet, Kiefer Sutherland was the coolest goddamn vampire I'd ever seen, and the whole style just captured my young imagination. And the soundtrack was always a staple of my music collection. I ended up buying the VHS (and the poster) in my teens, and watched it over and over and over. That's when I started to realize that Sam was queer-coded in a lot of subtle (for the '80s) ways. He's not a stereotype, there's never any actual reference to it...but there's quite a bit there, even beyond his obvious disinterest in girl cooties, when you read between the Born To Shop sweatshirt and Rob Lowe beefcake poster. My sister had that same poster on her wall. Sam has it on the door to his closet. Joel Schumacher knew what he was doing, and he knew how to do it.

What's wild about John Brown is he was too early w his whole shtick. If he had come into visibility around the time of Asher Roth and Mac Miller he'd have blown up. He absolutely should've won but Shamrock looked n rapped like Paul Wall so he was already the package they were looking for.
