Thank you for your video. Do you have any advice on how to help your non-readers, below grade level readers, since you can't really slow down and help them. Thank you.
@5thgradeoasis
@5thgradeoasis 4 дня назад
@@joshsepeda4334 This is a horrible curriculum for non readers. The first thing I did was to talk to the parents of those kids and explain the situation. Then I created a package of material (at their level) for them to work at home or in centers. Parents have to be committed to work with you as a team. The non reader kids will never be able to work the way Amolify is designed unless they catch up on their reading skills. I also focused on certain skills more with them instead of all at once. I focused mostly on vocabulary, basics of plot, basics of informational text. Small steps. Good luck my friend!

First grade Immersion teacher. Question do you still do reading groups with this program?
@5thgradeoasis
@5thgradeoasis 19 дней назад
@@MaricelaArce-u6q This program is not really designed to work in groups! It’s mostly whole class. However, I still do reading groups and small groups several times per week but I teach 5th! I would think that as a first grade teacher you just do reading groups but don’t really count on this textbook as your resources unless it’s mandatory.

@@shanellleyva1635 Hi! Thanks for you comment! I do read sometimes and other times I just say the info in my own words because it’s way too much! In the beginning I was preparing my own slides but it was taking me so much time! Later on we complained so our district prepared slides for us to present and that’s what I kept using. Your video gave me many ideas but what I most appreciated was your easy to follow structure for using this GRR strategy. I feel like I need to be more efficient in this area and your video gave me some great ideas on how to easily tweak what I'm doing to be more effective and efficient. I subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your teaching strategies. Thank you!

do you recommend reading parts of the book daily or just doing one read?
@5thgradeoasis
@5thgradeoasis 10 месяцев назад
Hello there! It all depends on the amount of time you have for your class and the academic level of your students. I’ve done some stories in parts. Others I’ve done at once. I think just the poems I’ve done in one read. Some of the texts are above grade level so I suggest you do those in parts. If you have a long class period then you can read it at once but then do close reading. Good luck!

I believe this is okay if the students themselves have Hispanic heritage but if they don't I feel like you shouldn't force them to do it since they really have no connection to these cultures you can maybe have him do a history report or something about it over the history of it but if they have no significant ties to this culture I feel like it could be hard for them to have it to it instead if they don't I feel like they should be doing a report over Hispanic History Month or something like that
@5thgradeoasis
@5thgradeoasis 11 месяцев назад
Hello there and thank you for your opinion. Well, we have different point of. view as teachers. I feel it is important to teach students about all cultures regardless if they have the heritage or not. Just like we do during “Black History Month” I assign a project to everyone about important African Americans, and during November “Native American Month” I also assign each student to research a twice regardless if if part of their heritage or not. A true social studies/history teacher knows this is important. Take care!!

I have been using HMH for 4 yrs, starting year 5. There are MANY components, but overwhelming for teachers to "piece" together a good road map for the classroom. It is defiantly overwhelming to new teachers who are learning the material and how to write lesson plans. I dove in determined to find the pieces that were the best fit for my students. I am about the same with you on which stories I use. I also love that I have the option to assign Spanish and English. I really like Writable and Amira, but the district took it away. I did pair some of the stories with other novels. For example, Willie B. is great with The One and Only Ivan and The True Story of Ivan (Children's book) It was such a great way to tie in fiction and nonfiction. The students enjoyed doing a group project on the characters I bought from Teachers Pay Teachers. This year we will add a small research assignment on the History of the Atlanta Zoo and write and argumentative paper.

Great job! Keep on tailoring it to your kids needs and what you think it’s appropriate! HMH is a complicated curriculum for everyone but specially newcomers.. it’s sad they took away Amira and Writable because they were great supports for ESL kids! We don’t use HMH anymore, We are using another curriculum called Amplify which is even worse! Thanks for all you do!! Have a fantastic school year!

Thank you for your video. I teach 5th grade ELAR and have several new non-English speaking students. I am able to let them listen to our stories in Spanish and English. I have bi-lingual students that I have paired them with, use google translate and say Hi app to communicate, and have began placing labels in the classroom. I also have spanish Library books available. Some concerns I have are making sure my student helpers are not losing their own classroom time by helping the other student. (I do not speak or understand Spanish) and finding materials on their interest level to make them feel a part of the classroom community and getting grades from them.

Hello there! Thank you so much for this comment! Congratulations on your new job! It will surely be a new adventure and I truly hope you enjoy it.. it will be a big change coming from other profession. You will probably have your roughest time at the beginning of the school year when all things are new, but working with children is the greatest thing ever at least for me, so be patient, organized and always ask questions. My best advice to use time wisely is to maximize your planning periods to do all the copies and grading (instead on spending time on phone or gossiping with other teachers). You can also plan ahead for several weeks at a time. You can make copies ahead as well. Answer emails once a day, and be mindful of deadlines. Soon I’ll be posting a video about tips on how to better manage time so that you don’t have to work so much from home.. I’ll let you know when it is ready.. Take care!!! Big hugs!!
