Just some of my experiences doing my most favorite pass time, Kayak Fishing mostly for California Yellowtail off La Jolla and now using my 2020 SOLO SKIFF to be able to cover a lot more water and have more time fishing.
Thank you! Just like the last 3 weeks the wind was stronger than predicted. I am going out tomorrow at 5:30, again. Only caught 1 mackerel, 1 white fish, 1 nice size sand dabs and 1 small bass. Launch at 5:30 beached at 11.
Just when I was going to suggest to you to troll a long lip Rapala I see you have one on the line. Back in the 70s we would troll several of those I think we used a salt water version of something like it back then. One on each side of the boat. Even the bigger size works great for yellows, bass , Halibut and such. Those sands and calicos are usually dependable and glad you bent the rod with a few. Great video Mark and I felt like I was riding right there with you. Keep up the great work and I'll be watching for you my friend ❤
Thank You Dwight. Yes I used to use them and swim plastics a lot when fishing from Kayaks for years. Like many things us humans tend to like shinny new toys, the fish don't give a damn.Tight Lines!
Question. What trolling rod and reel do you use for yellow or large fish? Limited funds so I am using an Okuma converter none line counter. My other reel are cheap spinning. A few years ago for Father's Day I was blessed with a pretty expensive spinning reel and it lasted no longer than the $25 ones. I take them apart and clean and regrease them every 4 the time out otherwise they freeze up. Thank you
@SDFishGuessWhoMeAgain fishing on kayaks for years I learned about maintenance and reels that hold up better in reallly close to and sometimes submerged saltwater environment. I still have several Daiwa Sealine Reels that are still awesome today and are not too expensive. Tight Lines!
About 4 weeks ago paddled straight out 2+ miles and first cast 3 ounce hookup baits chovy and a 4 1/2 pound brown rock fish. Caught 3 bass 15-18", 2 large mackerel and 1 red rock fish.
Been out 3 times in the last 2 1/2 weeks. Drift and breezy at sunup so tough paddling. First cast a couple of weeks ago just at the preserve line, hookup baits 3 ounce chovy and a 3 pound bass! Paddled out 2 miles? And caught a few more fish. Big mackerel. Went out past Monday and not much. Better wind and drift conditions. 2+ miles out and back and only 1 decent rock fish, 2 white fish under 1 1/2 pounds and 1 mackerel. Going out tomorrow Friday hopefully.
Hey Mark it's great to see you on the water again my friend. I enjoy off La Jolla more than any other area. I too remember the big kelp beds from when I left there in 74. I thought bird rock is close to where you were but 50 Years away the shoreline may have changed and my memory. A great swell day from the wind. You'll get a better day I'm sure. Sorry about the wordy comment, but I've been eagerly waiting for this video. Keep em coming my friend. I told Mikey and Nam I thought they had single handedly lowered the yellow population Lol. Thanks for the video my friend ❤
@DwightPerkins-i7t Bird Rock is a bit south and about the Southern LJ MLPA is. I very often will troll between there and just north of the point. That covers a lot of water and it's easier to follow contours and fish different depths. Yeah the Kelp was so thick that it was like a carpet floating on the surface of the water.
@@markr9312 I remember a narrow street in LJ that went down to a barrier that you could step over and fish a small Sandy area between some rocks. We took alot of corbina and perch from there in the 60s.
Looked like a yak convention for awile. You are just like me as I pick up all the garbage I can that other people leave. Those floatie things looked like jellies at first. Somehow I didn't watch this video till just now. ❤
@DwightPerkins-i7t by the wind sailors seem to have many different shapes, I have seen many varieties at certain times of the year all are part translucent and blueish.
@@antraxkiller6210 Not Yet! My friend Mikey, (SD Fish & Sips) Is the San Diego Solo Skiff Dealer. You can reach him by email at californiaskiffs@gmail.com
One thing for sure the older we get, the easier we need things to cooperate with us. Looks like you've got the loading and unloading procedure figured out. 👍👍
Yes, I did upgrade the hand winch using the same bracket but now it's a Badlands 2500lb UTV 12v winch I plug in to a portable battery, I used to use for a Fish Finder. When you get Old, you need to work smarter Not Harder.
Scary video, Mark! I see that your hull access lid was open and I think water was pouring into the hull. Was that the case and if so, do you have an electric bilge pump removing the water? I'm about to buy my first SOLO Skiff in Louisiana and am trying to learn as much as I can. Have had numerous kayaks and bass boats and this skiff seems to be my ticket these days. Thanks my friend!
@swamphog77 No the hull is sealed and water just roll over and through. Water does not get inside, unless the seat hatch was open and upside-down. It still would not sink, due to the inside being lined with spray foam as a layer that offers strength and floatation. The open lid, is the Livewell for bait
That one was definitely worth the price of admission. I felt like I was right beside you trying to give you a 3rd arm to gaff with. Awesome video thanks!
@DwightPerkins-i7t That's why I keep going, time and time again. They say " The tug is the drug" I beleive it, because after the first 30+ lb'r on a Kayak, I was hooked on LJ Homeguard Yellowtail. The rest is by-catch and sometimes some also go home with me. I get a huge rush feeling their power, hearing the drag screaming and sometimes it pulling even harder you almost loose the grip on the rod. There's only one other I trying for on rhe Solo Skiff and they might be getting close enough soon, Tuna.
@@markr9312 I follow Adam on Die Hard fishing and he's been towed by some big fish and I figure he'll get one in that yellow yak before long. I look forward to seeing you get a tunie because I'll be living it with you for sure. Keep em coming 👍👍
@@markr9312 One time in 1972 on a charter boat my friend knocked my rod over and broke it. I ended up having to fish with an ultralight rod some guy had with 8 lb test line. a The captain stopped on a sandbar about ten miles out on the way back in and I caught several sand bass over 4 pounds with it. Talk about brutal work getting them to the top. I'll never forget that ❤
@@DwightPerkins-i7t Back in 2013 when I started Kayak fishing and fishing La Jolla on the Kayak, I remember reading stories on BWE of La Jolla Kayak Fishing legends having competitions catching La Jolla Yellowtail using Barbie Rods spooled with braid.🤣😂
Thanks. Yeah it allows me to turn either 360 degrees , so I can choose the angle I want the rod to be depending on speed or lure pressure and be able to troll two and keep then apart. On this video I was trolling two when the Yellowtail hit the Nomad DTX 100, on the other side I was trolling a Shimano Coltsniper annd after the hit and line peeling, I slowed the Solo Skiff a little and started a slow turn while winding in the coltsniper as fast as I could. Then I proceeded to fight the Yellow and invite it home.
Back in the 60s and 70s the big charters of Seaforth and Islandia would always have a sand bass or Calico honey hole they could go to to salvage a bad fishing day. Another great video of memories from the past for me thanks😊
Nice trash pick up. SDFS uses the same color skiff. And yes that's why they call it fishing. I was born in Scripps hospital in 1956, fished all over La Jolla, Mission Bay, Torrey Pines and such. Great video keep doing it 😆
It is a huge upgrade with many benefits of a boat, with out the huge expense. I used to own boats years ago, so I know how much they cost to run and own. I surf launch at La Jolla Sores 97% of the time, even sometimes in 4' surf, outside where get it gets much choppier at times, it is super stable and dry, unless moving at speed in the chop. Here's a unedited video I took while holding my GoPro. I slowed down to video because holding the GoPro kept me from being able to hold myself firmly and go faster. The GoPro just never really show how high the chop was, high wind just came up and it got nasty fast. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LchFXAFk5mM.htmlsi=U7MsmalrZ_hYoq3A
@@markr9312 lol.. That's looks like when I'm on a party boat heading offshore in the fall.. Anyway. I mostly fish in the NYC's Bay. This will give me longer range to explore all the areas outside the bay in the harbor which I can't really do on foot power. In general, it will not be that choppy compared to what you have there. But good to know it can handle it. There are tons of boats around in case I will flip, so, not 2 worry about that . The next thing is how to haul it since it is 150 lbs. Don't want to get a trailer. Maybe need to get a slip in the marina for the convivence.
@MrReelsa I've landed several over 45 lbs California Yellowtail and with it's ability to let me chase Dorados and Tuna 20+ miles offshore while getting 25 mpg I couldn't ask for more from the Solo Skiff. I carry it in the bed of my truck and used a hitch extender to help support the bow end. On my channel I have a video about how I rigged it, cause everyone was always asking. I upgraded from a hand boat trailer winch to a badlands 12v 2500 lb atv winch, with remote. No more heavy lifting.
What’s the weight capacity of that kayak? I’m surprised it’s still afloat considering the massive balls of steel you have kayaking in great white waters 😆
Ha ha ha. It's 400 lbs. In the 11+ yrs I've been fishing La Jolla almost weekly first on Kayaks and since July 2020 on the Solo Skiff. I've seen or hooked many Sharks. Threshers, Macos, Leopard, etc. Last year was the first time I have seen one, even though through the years I've been close to friends that said, there's a Great White. I was drifting a Greenback Mac about 1/2 mile off the La Jolla Point in 100' water. While looking down at something on the deck, I hear a loud splash and whoosh. As I look up, 25' in front of my Solo Skiff is a large foamy circle and I swear I could see that famous shot of a Great White's open mouth full of teeth sliding back underwater and disappearing. I spotted another disturbance a few hundred yards away and went quickly to the area to see, but it was gone. I always shake my head when going. out or in when launching at the Shores and passing all those swimmers between the La Jolla Cove and the. Shores. Tight Lines!
@kevinpreston4158 Yeah the last time I lost significant amount of gear was 10 yrs ago, rolled a Malibu X13 off the La Jolla point in a extremely windy and rough surf day. There was only one other kayak out that day. Lost a tackle box full of irons & lures as well as all the live bait in my live well. Since then I leash every thing on deck. After landing and the other kayaker landing, it turned out that the other Kayaker was Kevin Nakada's ( Sea Samurai) girlfriend (a member of the Hobie Kayak Fishing Team) way more experienced than me. She says "man it was dicey out there". It's all part of paying Fishing Dues.
This is my 2016 Malibu X Factor. I started Kayak fishing in 2013 on an earlier model that did not have the Live Well tank that this year has, but I always loved the load capacity and most of all it's super stability. So when I had a chance to buy and rigg this one at a discount, I drove 200 miles to get it. Tight Lines!
Thanks. I run my Lowrance 7TI with a DSI (Downscale, Sonar) transducer and for the settings, I set the sensitivity on Auto, the Colorline is at 77% and use 83 Hz, because on the mediun chirp setting the screen gets a snow affect when going at speed otherwise. Hope that helps. I tried many other settings over the years, but what you see on the display is what I like in the display differentiating density by the color shades.
I think I saw you coming in when I was going out in my grey Hobie yesterday 👍🏼. I had one good bite in front of the park in about 38’. Nothing but brown water and weeds the rest of the day.
@@markr9312 no motor, ALL LEGS 🤣 that was my first time going out there. The currents were ripping after you left, I couldn’t stay on the fish I did see on the sonar.
@@markr9312 that’s probably it, I saw you mentioned you had a bit of drive, I stay in San Bernardino. Do you live close to me? Maybe we could coordinate something.
The two that were used mainly on this video are Shimano Terez the one with the gold Avet Sx Raptor MC 2 spd is 8', the one with the blue Avet MXJ 5.8 MC is 7'.
Not in the last few weeks. I've been keeping an eye on the fishing counts and the surf and wind forecast and was not excited enough, to put up with the May grey June gloom. Likely Wednesday or Thursday.
Congratulations! Did you get the Solo Skiff through Mikey? Those Yellows like to "rock you" if they can. I'm your newest Subscriber! I'm looking forward to your future adventures! Troll Hard, be safe.
No, Mikey was not the Local dealer back in 2020. OEX San Diego used to be local dealer back then. I've know Mikey, since black in 2013-2014 both of us fishing out of paddle Kayaks and chancing LJ Yellowtail even back then.
Thanks Dan. I saw on Mikeys last premier chat, that you were the one that took his picture with his LJ Yellowtail. It was like. 3-4 lbs bigger than mine. I liked Mikey using a little bass fisherman's trick, with a little arm extension. It, like mine had big shoulder, but at least mine had very little in it's digestion system. It seemed odd with all the bait around.
