The plays Pinter wrote in this period are known as "Memory Plays". As you see, the characters reminisce about the past. The main and deep theme of this one I think is communication and language. Difficulty and breakdown in communication. Subtlety in language (different meanings from the words that are actually being said). The couple are there, they are sitting at the same table together, but they do not seem to hear each other. Do they? Or do they not? The man seems to be trying to communicate, but the woman is in her own world and either does not or does not want to hear him. Other themes I think are relationships, marriage, sexual desire, infidelity, growing older, difference in outlook on life between men and women....
Probably the best interview he ever gave, thanks to Melvin Bragg a great interviewer ☯ However I saw Three Tall Women on Broadway and hated it; reminded me of the ridiculous ending of 2001. His others are really little more than alternative theater off off B'way (sorry Edward). 😒 However I agree that WAOVW is one of the 4 greatest American plays. 💙.
Their separation is indicated by WHAT they talk about, each focused on something not mentioned by the other, indicating nothing in their lives connects them, he spending time knowing about beer, she about her identity as a woman, mentioning a child, drawing, the beach and sea.
I feel sorry for you. Try to read a bit about other playwrights like Ionesco, Samuel Beckett. It may help you appreciate Pinter. Also listen to his Noble award speech.
Thank you for your kind thoughts. I am exceedingly familiar with the playwrights you mentioned. Anyone who considers this " great " drama needs to re - evaluate their sensibilities. Sad to see Ian Holm and Penelope involved in this classic example of Pinter p*** taking !
