Thank you for watching, Doctor. C.C. Johnson's code on my rifle is 51024; I knew the rifle was built in/around 1951 and I suspected it was made for Charles S Landis. Landis had the same customer code for Charlie Parkinson's shop, Ellwood Epps custom shop and Elmer McConnell's gunsmith shop in Elmira, Ontario. You are a walking tome for firearms information, Doctor. Thank you for the clarification on the Black Rat Snake, I had wondered about the "Pilot" name from my grandfather. It has been years and years since I last saw a specimen here in Ontario.

What are the graphite wads for and how were they used?
@markcarew6724
@markcarew6724 Месяц назад
Graphite wads were used to hold the powder charge against the primer. During the 1930s and through to the early 1950s, handloaders didn't have reliable access to slower burning powders. As a result, there was significant empty space left in the cartridge between the powder and the bullet. Some handloaders felt that the graphite wads provided some lubrication between shots and lessened throat erosion. Thank you for watching and posing a good question.

Mark, I have a question. I really really like Alpha Munitions OCD brass, but they don't make the .243 Win brass. The closest thing they have is the .260 Remington brass with the Large rifle primer. Do you think that would be a problem sizing them down to .224 for my 22.243 project? Or would I end up with the brass being to thick in the neck area? Of course I could always just use Lapua .243 Win brass. I like them too. :)
@markcarew6724
@markcarew6724 Месяц назад
The 260 Remington brass is going to be a headache for you, IMHO. You are going to need a forming die to reduce the neck to .224" and you will have to turn the necks down to at least .015" thickness. I suggest using 243 Winchester brass (Lapua would be excellent). You still may need to turn the necks down somewhat, but you won't need a forming die. Also, the barrel on this rifle has a 1 in 20" twist to maximize velocity with sub 50 grain bullets. I hope this helps your decision. Thank you for watching.
@Rico11b
@Rico11b Месяц назад
@@markcarew6724 Yes Sir, it did. I'll just go with Lapua on this one with a bit of neck turning. I'm gonna go with a 1 in 8 twist or maybe a 1 in 9 twist. I only want to to drive the heavies. Like the 85.5 grains and higher bullets. Thanks! :)

@Rico11b
@Rico11b Месяц назад
@@markcarew6724 Will do. Right now I'm trying to decide what twist rate I want and what barrel length. I can't decide if I want a 1:8 or 1:9 twist rate. That will depend mostly on the velocity I will get with heavy for caliber bullets. If I can "comfortably" get high speeds at 3250+ with the 88 or 90 grainers then the 1:9 would be fine to use. The more speed you have the less twist you need, but a balance must be struck to sufficiently stabilize the bullet. I REALLY don't want to overspin them, but I don't want to underspin them either. lol.
@markcarew6724
@markcarew6724 Месяц назад
I ran your numbers through a Berger Bullets stability spreadsheet for a 85.5 grain and 90 grain 0.224" at 3250 fps. According to the calculations, you will need a 1 in 7" twist to stabilize both bullet choices; 1 in 7.25" minimum. The chart indicates that 1 in 9" is far too slow and 1 in 8" is very marginal. Here is a thread on the Middlestead and heavy for caliber bullets. www.longrangehunting.com/threads/22-243.278417/ Or, if you have masochistic tendencies, try the 22-284 Winchester; it was my second choice for this project.

@@markcarew6724 Wow that is a low twist rate. A 22-243 AI sounds like an interesting project. Back in the early 1960s, a gentleman by the name of Clarke built the 224 Clarke by necking the 7x57 to 22 caliber. He used a fast twist barrel to fire his own 90 grain bullets. It might be faster than the project you are considering currently . . .

I have a nice 1884 Springfield "Trapdoor" .45-70 rifle, so I learned about reloading Black Powder Cartridges, made some phone calls to ask questions, loaded up 100 rounds (not enough-need 48 just for the match), & left on Friday, a week before the match. Fuel pump quit Saturday night near Jackson, MN, so, didn't get there until Tuesday night. Long story short, I only hit 7 out of 48 shots, but had a very good time visiting with veteran shooters & learning about the sport. I went back in 2017, 18 & 21. Because of my wife having health problems, & my age (81), the distance, I probably won't get to go again. If you have the chance, & the desire to do this, do it. Your score doesn't matter, except to you, but the experience is worth every bit of it. I'm glad that I have the memories. Afterwards in 2016, I visited Little Bighorn Battlefield, Cheyenne, WY, a cousin in Littleton, CO, then went to Long Beach, CA to visit family, then Rt.66, Barstow & Needles, then Lincoln & Ft. Sumner, NM (Billy the Kid), Davis gun museum in Claremore, OK then back home, 1,600 miles in 3 weeks, 2 days. Other years, Wagon Box Battlefield, Ft. A year ago I bought a L61R in 270win from aroud 1966-1967 for 400€ for the younger of my sons. The first hand loads of 110gr Hornady V-Max with N-135 turned in at <0,5” 😅.. Would trade my Sako M591 in 308win any day for that rifle.. 😂 The older son got a L579 from 1967-68 in 308 and it shoots just as good.

I currently have a high wall in 219 zipper . Also a good looking old rifle, a 29 s weaver scope . the barrel is marked 22-3000. the action is from 1901 I believe My Grand Dad had the action re-barreled in the late 30s or early 40's and finished the gun himself. Not sure who he would have the work done, however he knew P.O. Ackley. and h host of other period "Wild Catters"

Thank you for watching, Al. I was saddened by the recent passing of your father. He was one of my English teachers in high school - all those many years ago.
