I really enjoyed the whole talk, it was indeed a very cool conversation. My only input is that you didn't discuss the difference between "taming" and "domesticating". We've had tame bears and lions in circuses for hundreds, maybe thousands years....but we haven't domesticate bears and lions. So tame does not equal domesticated, and vice versa.

As for Yasuke, that is another story and I won't go into it, but without his work on Yasuke, Mr. Thomas Lockley would not have attracted the attention and been asked to speak in such a place. His words and actions against Japan and its history are problematic. I am unwilling to go to the trouble of writing such a post, but I am writing my opinion because it seems that in other countries silence can be perceived as acceptance of fact even if it is a lie. He has deleted or locked all his social networking accounts, so it is very difficult to tell him anything directly. If you are offended, please feel free to ignore the comment. It is not authentic or factual or genuine. Personally, I enjoy drama as fiction, but to declare it authentic is very irresponsible. In the first place, you are asking the wrong person for an opinion. I have looked at Mr.Thomas Lockley's background, and he is a man who happened to come and live in Japan, without any quality education about Japan at university. Imagine, for example, you traveled abroad after leaving school, lived there for some reason, did a little research on local history, started editing Wikipedia and Britannica, and for 10 years no one paid attention, no one cared, not much criticism, you feel like a historian! He felt like a historian, he felt so good that he published a book on history, Wikipedia and his publications attracted attention, he was regarded by the public as a historian with expertise in Japan, that is who he is, and if he is a historian, then everyone is a historian. He is a former associate professor of law at Nihon University and seems to specialize in English, so the quality of his research as far as history is concerned is not even on the level of the average Japanese history buff. He is a type of person who speaks the truth of what he wishes to be true, spreads it in society, and reinforces his own theory by enhancing the value of his argument with the opinions of those who see and believe in it. James Clavell, the author of the drama, is not an expert in any field related to Japan, but a novelist, screenwriter, and film director. His war experience with Japan may have created an image of Japan in his mind, for better or worse, but I feel that the author is sincere. There are a number of foreigners who study Japanese culture, but Thomas Lockley is far from being up to the same standard. He lacks the calmness, neutrality, minimal conscience, imagination and judgment that an academic should have, and he is not interested in anything but his own imaginary truth. To begin with, the names of the characters in the dramas and the names and personalities of the models for each character are different. Also, they do not kill innocent people by boiling them in a kettle for no reason, as in the dramas. This has been criticized even by foreigners who have some knowledge of the subject. Foreign castaways were treated with great respect, and not only by Europeans and Americans. Even foreigners should have a different opinion if they are serious historical researchers who can read old Japanese documents. Even foreigners who are not specialists but are somewhat familiar with William Adams may feel various discomforts with this drama. If the identity of the castaway Westerners was revealed and they were obedient, they were treated quite well, if not as well as when Chinese or Korean envoys arrived. As one can see, Europe had already begun to propagate and invade Christianity in various parts of the world. Japan understood this little by little and avoided needless trouble. European countries used any trouble in diplomacy, trade, etc. as an excuse to launch invasions, actively using religious mind control, brainwashed people, and mixed-race locals for invasion and domination. Treating foreigners badly for no reason would certainly give them an excuse to invade. Sensing the possibility of its own conquest by European nations, Japan sacrificed economic, technological, and other development, even going so far as to impose a limited isolation that lasted for hundreds of years, except for economic exchanges with a few countries. To get back on topic, castles, stone walls, and other architectural features, as well as what people wear, are completely different or look slightly different from the real thing. Even foreigners, for example, who own a kimono, take dressing lessons, and wear it several times a year, should feel something different about it. The texture and design are not original, not Japanese, or cheaply made and worn in a clumsy manner. A real kimono is made through many processes by many craftsmen. It takes a lot of time and effort and is very expensive. Even a common man's kimono that can be purchased today costs more than one million yen (Approximately 6,500 USD)if a new one is made. Because of its high price, even middle class families hesitate to buy a new kimono. Families that own several kimonos are quite wealthy. Japanese swords and armor were very expensive even then, and are still expensive today, but even then the price of a good quality item was about the same as that of a luxury automobile. Samurai of low status could not afford to buy new swords, and even non-metallic imitations were commonplace. Today, swords made by Japanese swordsmiths are nowhere near the quality of those days. Armor is even more difficult to make, and it is impossible to make armor of the same technical and practical level as back then. Most of the Japanese armor made today is a mere cosmetic imitation. China was a great empire for thousands of years, constantly expanding its territory around it, but about half of each dynasty was ruled by a different ethnic group, and it was conquered by a different ethnic group several times, sometimes forcing them to wear a different dress, culture, or hairstyle. The Chinese culture has been severed many times, and various cultures are reproduced from domestic documents and documents and materials left in Japan and other countries. In some cases, temples are built with the help of Japanese scholars, carpenters and construction companies that build traditional temples. Like the old, original Han Chinese clothing in Chinese dramas, the kimono in this drama has the feel of an imaginary reproduction of such clothing. I do not have any criticism of the kimono, since it is unrealistic to bring in authentic kimono from Japan due to budgetary constraints, but I cannot remain silent when people say, "As authentic as it gets!"

@kuchi6948
@kuchi6948 3 дня назад
I apologize for the length.I did not know there was a character limit. Since I was able to write without any error or indication of character limit when I wrote, I thought it was OK and left it as it was. I had never seen a problem with long comments that I had seen before. As for Yasuke, what I wrote at the beginning is all there is to it, and I think it is up to each viewer to make his or her own judgment. The model for Toranaga is Tokugawa Ieyasu, who is very closely related to Ieyasu(Toranaga) in terms of history and human relations. It would be rather unnatural not to talk about Yasuke and his lord Oda Nobunaga. If Nobunaga had not died, Toranaga (Ieyasu) would have been a feudal lord and Yasuke would certainly have been one of the supporting characters in the drama. I myself wonder why there are no black slaves in Shogun, despite the presence of missionaries. It is beginning to be pointed out that Mr. Thomas Lockley may have been influenced by the claims of his leftist Japanese friends and researchers. If possible, I would like to invite him again and give him a chance to prove his innocence. I will not write anymore. No need to reply. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

If you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time and you’re in the way of an interplay of a wheel of cause and effect that’s unfolding from an event that you were not even a part of (either directly or remotely ) , it’s becomes freak accident or a misfortune of some sort. you bring shame to yourself and your familiy. .You invented this scenario: No, there is no title, no bloodline, no story, or samurai involved. Let's break it down. He steps off a boat, a lonely slave from Trinidad, and is just going to stroll around the beach (never mind the chains), grab some sushi and a sword, and suddenly the Emperor of Japan runs out from behind a tree and appoints him a samurai in 1185 Japan, where heads rolled for looking at someone the wrong way? It's far more likely he would have been imprisoned for 30 years. Trying to become the King of England in 2024 is probably easier. Stepping off a boat and becoming king would require a title, name, and achievements. Thomas's little invention has no historical facts backing it-it's just one man's claim. To back up his claims, he personally edited Wikipedia to fit his lies.

Love the author, am reading his Fall of Rome book which is super great and agree with his perspective on the West's diminishing power vis a vis the Resterners today. However, wealth is not a zero-sum game, so to say we need to accept being poorer than in the past just because the Resterners are getting richer doesn't hold water. Our decisions, our leaders can and do make a difference. The world economy was a zero-sum pie in the pre-industrial era, but that is no longer the case. Most innovation still happens in the West and we should ivest in that. We are losing sight of that I think and are neglecting our universities and our economies.

It's extremely doubtful that you didn't have some movements of people through Egypt to the levant. It's just a matter of geography. Neither of these are in a cul-de-sac. Some people might have travelled toward the east but on top of that the levant is certain to have been a destination for exiles from Egypt among other things. Although massively embellished I think there is some truth to the story of Moses. You essentially have someone who appears adopted into the high classes, probably an illegitimate kid or something, who despite being very well educated with what is normally secret practical and scientific knowledge has some kind of conflict due to not being legitimate so being likely limited, such as in terms of inheritance so then ends up falling out with the leadership and then escaping to Egypt. The literate classes in Egypt weren't all just religious. They often maintained power by centralising and hoarding a lot of advanced knowledge. They had to have that knowledge as a civilisation. You don't just have an advanced civilisation with advanced construction and agriculture by magic. If you read the story of exodus and think about it realistically as in lets say it's someone describing a real situation but in a way that just makes it sound supernatural then you can for many parts arrive at a fairly straight forward explanation. The plagues sound like terrorism. That was possible back then. It was known that if you did certain things such as pour lots of waste into the river that it would lead to disasters. This is like contaminating the water supply with fertiliser or back then just a lot of waste that you had around. A person with such privileged knowledge would appear to be like a magician to others. It is clear that Moses was aware of epidemiology. There is a story in which he executed men who slept with the women of other tribes and captives of war because of an STD. He also describes quarantine and sanitary procedures. With this in mind, some elements of Exodus are plausible but it's not what it looks like on face value. If it's true it actually reflects quite poorly on Moses and his people. We're essentially talking about a defector from Egypt who had some of their advanced knowledge. You end up with a fugitive terrorist fleeing authorities in Egypt going to the levant to set up his own little kingdom a little like how a criminal in the USA might try to go to Mexico combined with someone ousted as heir to the throne. The evidence for the Exodus is in the subtext. IT's clearly not accurate and embellished. However, there are certain elements of it that seem hard to make up for people at the time which indicate something else going on under the hood.
@the_smart_cookies_pod
@the_smart_cookies_pod 27 дней назад
That's a great story, however, just like Dan says, so far there hasn't been a shred of evidence to support it
@FirstLast-rb5zj
@FirstLast-rb5zj 27 дней назад
@@the_smart_cookies_pod It doesn't need data although I believe that there is. There had to be a flow from Egypt to the levant and the notion that there were never any cultists, criminals, exiles, people falling out with the power, etc is absurd. It's one of those stories that even if someone just made it up it's certain to be based on the kind of things that happened and in some version would have happened to happen anyway. I suggest you look at the story very closely and think about it very deeply. There is someone giving instructions that are for disease control showing practical knowledge of it but it's described as though the observer is like a kid or as though magic. If you consider what the real story might be beneath the story told, there is a very plausible sequence of events that is in fitting with the time. If you do this then you might have a better chance at knowing what to look for when it comes to trying to find the data for it. That includes these plagues. There's one written description that sounds like magic but it's also a way to deliberately spread disease, pulverising animals in effect (presumably the sick) then casting the dust into the wind. In other cases pouring a big load of sewerage into the river can create some of the problems described. Though I would also assume that some might just be added for dramatic effect, the Moses described routinely demonstrates knowledge that is very hard not to interpret as advanced Egyptian knowledge on things such as disease and sanitation. If not for it then similar things. Are there cases of feuds with royalty or similar and someone getting ousted? Do any leave the country? Is there any information in respect to people being exiled, passing through from West to East, getting stranded by boat then having to make their way back up by land through the levant, criminals fleeing, etc.. No data is opinionated but there is a lack of explicit record other than in the religious scriptures to my knowledge. It doesn't mean that it's completely fabricated. Academics assume that everything is recorded therefore there must be data and if there is not then nothing happened. This is not how reality works. Most data is lost. I believe that there is some desire to present Exodus as entirely mythical due to its implications if true. If you strip away the supernatural what it describes has certain implications. If you take a neutral look at Moses you may have a story describing a villain who escapes Egypt to build his own kingdom in the levant. It's quite genocidal among other things and Moses appears to have the expertise to be able to wage a campaign of biowarfare among other things. I would suspect that if a record of Moses were unearthed in Egypt that it might be destroyed for what it would say.

I'm not a scholar and can't read Greek, but a couple years ago I decided to read the four Gospels for myself to compare them. So many of the anecdotes are repeated so that it all just blurs together. However the most obvious difference I noticed in the storylines of the Gospels is that the Synoptic Gospels had Jesus cleansing the temple at the end of the story just before he died, whereas in John he basically starts out his ministry by cleansing the temple, so at the beginning of the narrative. That was the most glaring difference I noticed.
