Well, watching how the puddles of sweat just dried up within 48 hours was so satisfying, I used what I read about the other day. Although it actually took about 72 hours for my sweating to normalize, I went ahead and go'ogled the latest by Cynthia Yulesin and I don’t have to change clothes 2 times a day.

It's really easy, sarcasm is lying and saying the opposite of what you really mean, while sardonic is not lying and saying it in a very dark way. It's lie vs truth, that simple. Lurch from the Addams family saying his Urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr after being asked to do something he really doesn't want to do is sardonic. Someone telling Lurch after hearing his sardonic comment, "Tell us what you really feel about it Lurch." Is sarcastic, because they are lying, they don't want to hear what he feels at all.

Is it possible to say "historical building" if talking about ancient one? Dictionaries often give such colocation as "historic building" But for me such buildings are not only famous or important, but also related to history, as they were built long ago.

So wrong about Sardonic, so far... it can be funny when it's about life in general... depends on what life is throwing at you. YOU! Made it personal... it's not always personal.. sometimes it's about life or pretty much anything other than you... Now that's sardonic. And you're right, you may not think that's funny... but it *is* ironic. Too many people don't understand Sardonicism and that doesn't help anyone with homework... Now Mark Twain was both sardonic and sarcastic in his criticisms... Gulliver's Travels is very sardonic, and humorous... often Sardonicism asks us to look at ourselves... and sometimes we have to laugh. Otherwise it can be too painful! :-/ So, if I wasn't clear... I disagree.. However, if enough people start believing you, based on how language works... eventually you'll be right... And, then even the dictionaries will agree with you... Perhaps it's already too late. :-/ Now that *is* REAL Sardonic! However, if your point was to be the example... you fell really short. (OK, when I said "so far".. at the beginning... I didn't realize you were done...

Both sarcastic and sardonic are meant to mock. Sarcastic is “playful” mocking and sardonic is “hurtful” mocking. Reading the comments, and seeing how people react to comedians, jokes, and online comments, it’s clear that, generally, both tend to be a matter of perspective, tone, deliverance, etc. Which is why so often after someone gets “offended”, the sarcastic person says “I was kidding, it’s a joke!” The sardonic person doesn’t try to apologize. It also depends a lot on the background of the person delivering the line.

I'm genuinely flabbergasted as to why there's so many wrong definitions of sarcasm and sardonism here, including yours. Sarcasm is derived from Greek _σαρκάζειν_ , which means "to tear flesh, bite the lip in rage, sneer". Does this seem "playful" to you? Definitions throughout the centuries in multiple languages (e.g. by the Brothers Grimm in German or French playrights) have always emphasised the purposefully hurtful, scorning, demeaning, offensive and aggressive character of sarcasm. Obviously not everything offends people the same, and you're right to say that the term has been broadened to _also_ include those comments consisting out of rather mild and "playful" mocking. Sardonicism on the other hand is mostly characterised by a strong propensity of depicting suffering (cf. risus sardonicus) and not necessarily hurtful (always mocking too, that part was correct), but expressing a deep truth or a clever idea. A sarcastic comment for instance would be: "If at first you don’t succeed, stop trying already. You’re probably dumb." A sardonic comment would be: "You tried so often and always failed so far. You should get to the bottom of this."

@@kurteisner67 I appreciate the etymology, but sarcasm in English is always a based on lying, and saying the opposite of what you mean. So your example of sarcasm does bite and tear, but it's not a lie. Not sure it is sardonic either, depending heavily on how "dumb" is said. Sardonic is the opposite and is not a lie, and thus your sardonic example really works.
@kurteisner67

@@TheRadioAteMyTV Hello there! Thanks for your comment. I think you might be confusing sarcasm and irony. An often used definition of irony usually is something like: "the use of words that are the opposite of what you mean, as a way of being funny." (Cambridge Dictionary). Of course, you can make statements that are both sarcastic *and* ironic. However, you don't have to use the words that mean the opposite of what you say to be sarcastic. For instance, the answer to the question: "Which kind of Nazis are the best ones to throw a BBQ party with?" "Dead ones." is sarcastic, but it's not ironic or sardonic. Also, I disagree that either irony or sarcasm involve lying. Lying means to try to deceive someone in purpose, but if you did this, irony doesn't work at all. It's predicated on the other person understanding of what you try to actually say, which makes it earnest and not a lie. You could argue that saying the opposite of what you mean constitutes an untruth if the words themselves are taken at face value, but it's not meant to deceive someone.
@TheRadioAteMyTV

@@kurteisner67 I find the BBQ comment to be sardonic, or actually sadistic even more. Irony does mean the opposite of what is expected, as in the song from the 90s about irony, ironically got it wrong a lot. I am going to stick to my guns on sarcasm being a lie, because look how often people have to tell others after the fact, they were not telling the truth, they were being sarcastic.That's deceit. If it has to be explained that what was said was not true, then the speaker failed, and that happens all the time with sarcasm. You have to really give it the Steve Martin Excuuuuuuuuse Me level of body language to make sure the listener doesn't think it is true. Or use emojis in text, otherwise, it's just a lie that has to be walked back later so very often.

Sarcastic: Yeah, Trump’s hair looks great! I wish I could look like him. Sardonic: Yeah, Biden is a great choice for president. It’s not like a brain dead leftist idiot would vote for him.

Thw first stayement is sarcastic indeed. The second statement however is neither sardonic nor sarcastic, it's just an insult. Let me fix the second statement for you: "Biden seems to be a great choice for Senator. I think I'll vote for him in '20, unless if RFK runs of course."

I always like to distinguish them based on a Monk episode Adrian Monk : This is my assistant, Sharona. Ambrose Monk : Hello, we spoke on the phone. Adrian Monk : Oh, so you can dial a telephone! I was worried. I thought you might be paralyzed, or something. Ambrose Monk : I wasn't paralyzed. Adrian Monk : I was being sarcastic. Ambrose Monk : You were being sardonic. Sarcasm is a contemptuous ironic statement. You were being mockingly derisive. That's sardonic.

Sardonic isn't necessarily mean its just more passive aggressive in and cleverly mocking in more direct way where sarcasm may employ ambivalence and irony and has a lot to do with inflection

I would ask if you do not care for Sardonicisms... yes, it can be a way of attacking a subject... if by that you think I mean a person... then I would suggest your understanding of the scope of the word is severely limited.
