Science Fiction literature is my passion. FIT 2B READ is my effort to share my love of the hundres of novels and hundreds of short stories I've read from the genre.

I enjoy the practice of discussing both the negative and positive aspects of good and not so good books. It can be a challenge to always find five of each and I acknowledge the weight of the 5 likes and 5 dislikes will not always be proportional. To me that is the thrill of these videos.

I own FIT Personal Training in Washington DC. The first few videos I shot were shot at the gym. It was not a leap to name the channel, fittingly, FIT 2B READ.

FIT is the oldest personal training gym in North West Washington DC.

Love the Brave New World 1st Ed T-Shirt! I used to have it and completely wore it out. But now I have the actual first (UK) edition of the book on my shelf ;)

Such a strange book. Nobody stopped to think if the aliens were dangerous? My takeaway…even the smartest religious people will ruin anything they touch.

Yes! Finally a list I can completely get behind! The only thing, I am not as high on Red Rising... But the rest is perfection!!! But it is missing Glen Cook representation...

I remember Card's first recognized materpiece, 'Lost Boys'. Then I read 'Ender's Game' and was left breathless. But it wasn't until 'Speaker For The Dead' that I fell in love with Ender Wiggin.

No, you don't have to police anybody (no: Not even kids!) when it comes to reading material! Seriously, what's wrong with you people! Censorship is always bad and it's parental responsibility to talk about what their kids experience, but trying to shelter children from the world will always end badly! No, I am not saying give 'Mein Kampf' to 5 year olds, but if a teenager wants to read it? Let them, but: Talk with them about it, explain why that ideolgy is evil etc.!

Parable of the... Haha. I do find the slogan used by the far-right group in the story(-ies) interesting--especially since it's unlikely that anyone in politics has read Butler's work. 😂 But it's actually libs who are demonstrably trying to destroy America. They are allowing homeless camps to set up in front of private homes (cue the mass exodus from California over the past 2 years especially). They are literally attacking peaceful protestors. They are wantonly allowing criminals into the country via agreement with open border policies. No one's perfect...but the L has set it up so we *need* to arm ourselves (and I mean everyone does, not just righties). The gestapo-esque imagery for the R is hilarious given the current war on our minds, which is far more insidious--and invisible unless you're on your guard. So...I shall read Octavia Butler's work with mirth.

Thank you for this neat breakdown. I didn't know there were this many cyberpunk books. The impact of Gibson tends to dazzle people to the point we don't realize there was proto cyberpubnk and other writers exploring this subgenre at the same time as Gibson.

I read story collections and popular science books by Poul Anderson, Asimov, Clarke, Niven, etc. in high school and college. The key novels I read in college were proto-cyberpunk and early cyberpunk (Neuromancer, Shockwave Rider, Blood Music, Alfred Bester's early novels). I read _The Nine Billion Names of God_ story collection when I was younger and I thought it was great.

If you haven't read them... Heinlein is always interesting and fun. Clarke and Asimov are dry and boring. Are there better authors... yes. But if these are your choices, pick Heinlein.

For me it all began with Andre Norton (Star Guard) her depiction enforced mercenary service; of things alien were, to a 13 year old, amazing in the extreme. They have stayed with me over 60 years since my first reading. I followed up by finding Heinlein, some David Drake and Gordon Dickson to today with Ringo and Weber but tucked safely within the shelves of my collection is J.E. Pournelle. Two series 1) 4 book set Jansissaries and 2) Pournelle with S.M. Sterling "The Prince". a full collection of the short stories concerning Flakenbergs Legion. Pournelle was the actual researcher who gave us the "Rods from God". He did the work on this for real when he worked for the US Government considering President Regans" "SDI or Star Wars Inititive". He was the one who wove the inter-relationships with tactics and strategy mixed in wiith star ships, politics, mercenaries and doses of technology, logistics, crime, graft; and down-right corruption as realities no matter how far from Earth we travel. Highly recommend all of the above for those who crave nuance.

I picked this up with no knowledge of it besides it was sci-fi. Just finished it and loved it. It was a great ride and I liked all of the characters (even the demon). Any book with hell and aliens in the same novel (and treated so casually as fact) is giving me permission to suspend all disbelief and just enjoy the ride (and it was great)

I read all of these, most well before you were born, and have them in my library. Heinlein, Asimov and Clarke still are the Big Three, though there are many other greats. Never forget, Starship Troopers is as truly great as the Verhoeven movie is terrible.

"Rendezvous With Rama" is one of my all time favorite novels, one I happily re-read every now and again and it never loses it's appeal. The sequels, not so much. In fact the 3rd in the series I've only read thru once and will never touch, again. When Heinlein wrote "Starship Troopers" a popular sci-fi trope, at the time, was the misunderstood aliens. Heinlein was asking "how will humanity cope if we ever do encounter a truly alien species that is totally implacable, impossible to reason with and determined to enslave or destroy us?" I don't think I've ever read an Asimov novel that wasn't an excellent read and thought provoking (actually that's true of Heinlein, as well) but my favorite is, of course, the Foundation series. You really need to read the robot books first, though.

For me Asimov. Then Clarke, at least his earlier works and 2001, 2010 etc. Then Heinlein. Theyre all great but thats the order they sit in my consciousness.
