Hi, I'm Mike Svob.

Since 1982, I have been a full time artist based outside of Vancouver, Canada. Over the past 30 years, I have had the pleasure of sharing my skills and love for painting through my book "Paint Red Hot Landscapes That Sell” and by teaching numerous panting workshops across North America and Europe. Through these workshops, I have had the joy of teaching hundreds of artists in different stages of their development and watching their growth as painters.

I've created this channel to share my experience as a professional painter with other painters of all skill levels. I will post tips, tricks tutorials and challenges to the channel regularly so please subscribe to stay informed and up to date.

Happy painting,

Mike Svob

The Japanese painter Hokusai who started painting at age 7 band put down the brush at age 88 years old the year of his death wrote. If you lose your inspiration, then you are not meant to do what you do". I think true artists do not have blocks, because they are inspired 24/7 by everything. I thin it is harder for real artists to stop being inspired and put their brain to rest for a minute. I think blocks come when you are asked to produce something by others, like your clients and your art gallery dealer, or your publisher or your whatever else. When you start producin g things for finan cial purposes then it stops being genuine, it become just a business. Businessmen and women get blocks not artists. Artist either do art or die, like Hokusai, or da Vinci or Frida, etc,.... If you lose your muse then maybe you were never meant to be an artist to begin with. In old Greek myth, they believed that the artist lost the muse because the muse abandoned the artist as they realized they weren't real ones, and moved to another person.

Can you apply acrylic paint (to put the information) on the raw canvas back side and not worry about it bleeding through. The front side has been gessoed. Thanks.

Great tips. If I am not mistaken, that painting on the left is Lake Louis in Banff?? Sure looks like it to me. Been there many times, and did the tee house hike, or should I say challenge lol. Cheers

Isolation is when you spray clear gloss over a painting to stabilize it, I THINK!? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Very nice , I was guessing a lot how it was going to turn out , the shapes give it a very nice look and the colours you chose were fantastic , this is the refresher I needed , I did a local course some years ago but dropped off painting , I’m back and feel like I’m starting all over sometimes , it’s nice just to be painting again though , thanks for a fab tutorial and sharing your knowledge.🙏

I'm an art teacher ..grades K - 6 and I've felt no personal creative energy for the past several years! I love my students and their work but personally, I'm SO stuck! I can't even start a painting or project without abandoning it soon after. Now, I don't even start things because I have no ideas and my artistic confidence is at an all time low. This feels terribly permanent 😢

So. Sometimes when I'm coming back to add layers with acrylic I have a problem where subsequent layers just aren't coming off the brush onto the canvas. I'm just a beginner with this, do you have any advice?

what happens if you apply to a very new gallery and they try to charge you thousands to show there? I am not a new artist but currently have no gallery representation at the moment and that just happened to me. I was appalled and I declined.

A decorative piece you would acquire to match with the carpet and the couch. A piece of fine art you would acquire whether it matches or not, but for it's intrinsic aesthetic value. That is, in an ideal world.

Believe it or not, I have done 4 x 6 FOOT paintings on the French easel (the first one you demonstrated)! How? The bottom of the canvas rests on the wing nuts of the two front legs! The canvas has a cross bar and this enables me to bungie the heck out of it to the main body of the easel (so it stays resting on the wing nuts). The top of the canvas can be held by the extender as normal, OR the extender can be affixed to the CROSS BAR at the back of the canvas (which incidentally is a good way to work slightly larger using the conventional base for the canvas). the key here is to always bring 2-3 good bungie cords of different lengths. Another tip is that your backpack or tote bag can be bungled to suspend from the bottom of the easel which provides a great deal of weight and stability, in windy conditions for example. It also is a way to prevent your backpack from being stolen!

I have read that if you add too much water to acrylic paint it will break down the bonding agents in the paint and it won’t adhere. Any one have experience with this?

Nice.. But is there any way to make the color more transparent without adding water as I am drawing using charcoal and pencil on paper, so I don't want the acrylic to effect my paper but I want add if as a design

Think of Decorative Art as wallpaper to a room, it’s purpose is to match or compliment the colours of the furnishings or the intended theme of the room, as in coastal, rustic, industrial, or elegant tonal, etc. Fine art is more of a form of communication, when the artist wants to expresses their own feelings, thoughts, or document their surroundings, or life events.
