Let’s hope we see this again. Lancaster landing at manston airport. Closed at the moment. Danger of greedy morons building houses on the land. Not a good idea.
I can’t begrudge the more commercial re-recorded version because it introduced them to a much bigger audience and is probably the key reason they’re still around to this day (and just had their very first number one album).
The extreme width of the runway was due to its use as an emergency landing ground for damaged bombers and, being closest to mainland Europe it was probably the busiest. The approach filmed was the last view many planes witnessed before their last and final landing. RIP to all those crew members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
I think I mostly prefer the 91 version, but the original does correct that version's biggest flaw imo. In the original, that amazing build-up in the "in love in fear" section leads straight into the chorus; in the 91 version it instead drops into the "dooooowwwwwnnnnnn" bit, which completely kills the momentum. I can only assume that bit was added in the middle to make it easier to sing, instead of having two fairly breathless sections in a row?
