i wonder if ships of the type the burial was made of actually sailed or if it was purely ritual and ceremonial to bury royalty in them like a coffin is to us today. it would be sublime irony if the sutton hoo ship rebuild was putting the ship type to sea for the first time ever lol.
I watched this programme as its my neck of the woods but sadly not sure I'll watch many more. Now it's just too structured and packaged. Back in the day we had Robin in the library, Viktor on a hillock scribbling away and best of all Mick Phil and Tony in a pub! I felt like I was there with them. Now, and no disrespect but Gus is just a voice over. I'll watch those older episodes on repeat and hope some of the old spontaneity and dare I say amateurish can be rekindled. Good luck to the channel but for me its no longer the go to it was.
Now this is an attraction I would be keen to visit if I ever manage to visit the country. If they ever need to bump up public interest, a bi annual or annual multi-day medieval larp type tournament event thing would be amazing. They could even open up parts of the castle they think can withstand that kind of traffic. Imagine a medieval banquet at the castle as part of events 😍. Historical battle and tournament reinactments and tons of festive stalls as true to history as possible. General public can bring tents and camp on the lawns so as not to damage the castle. Would be incredible and ppl would travel to attend ❤
The US Army calls them Quanset huts and still uses them on occasion. This isn't the first time I've heard them called Nissen Huts but every time I have it's been a brit.
I could just see on the workers' faces the connection with their ancestors. With the swing of their axe, they travel back in time, as the physical labor is transforming into metaphysical experience.
Please cut out the music or make sure it is very subservient to the talk. I could hardly hear most of this. The articles are super but what good are they if they're drown by music that adds no value.
I live in the Arctic region and I just love watching the episodes. To my amateur eye, the tunnel resembles a cold cellar where large quantities of fish are stored. The tunnel has bends so that the cold can't escape too easily. The snow is collected in to the room at the end of the tunnel, which turns into ice on the floor. Snow is added every year so that the ice does not melt too much. We still have and use these kind of cold cellars to store salmon. They are earth cellars, some are like deep pits. The insulation is done well to keep the ice.
One of the cool things about the Kirkdale inscription (the church featured at the end of this program) is that every word of it, except for the Scandinavian proper names, is still used in everyday English.
Absolutely loved this clip my dream would be to be with u guys at time team even if it's just to watch it all in action . To be there and to experience all the people I grew up watching. The amount of times I have watched each and every episode and still do to this day love it
Stewart’s ability to see the past in the landscape is always fascinating! Honestly if I lived in the U.K. or anywhere in Europe, I’m pretty sure I would dig up my own garden just out of curiosity!
7pm BST is 1pm here so I'll still be at work for 2 hours 😭, I know what I'm doing when I get home though! Time Team at Sutton Hoo! Mick, Robin and Victor are up there doing cartwheels! This is going to be awesome!
