I watched your video till the end and loved it ( except for the sniffs :) ) . Too bad you had to rush at the end but I don’t think you talk too much. Very informative. Please keep up the great work
One thing I loved about your videos is you not smelling the rise in camera. I stopped watching other famous yourubers precisely for that reason. It puts me off. Disappointed to see you do the same.
Hi, how did you rescue your lady Gardner from Powderly mildew? Some of my favorite roses plants have developed it and have deformed buds that are not blooming. I hope you respond. Thank you!
@@annann-fn2zi Hi Anna, yes my lady gardener was severely infected with powder meldwew. Luckily she was my only rose with this condition. I’d tried neem oil which in my opinion doesn’t work. I then tried sulphur spray which works better and meldew stop spreading but it was too late. This year she’s been magnificent, producing beautiful blooms and new canes. Don’t worry powder meldew will not kill the plant, it will overcome the disease and thrive again the following year.
@@kenvoong5977 Thank you Ken! I appreciate your prompt response. Will try the sulphuric soap. What’s the white stuff on your distant drummer? That’s how my plant look. Is that powdery mildew ?
@@annann-fn2zi yes distant drum did suffered with light powder meldew. The white stuff is the sulphate spray I use to treat it with. So best treat it early before it gets any worse.
Very helpful! Something I had been waiting for a rosarian to cover. Thank you! Any reason you did not talk about the yellow rose next to ancient Mariner ?
Beautiful garden! Beautiful roses! orchids , house, and of course your beautiful wife your a lucky man, give her the best blooms next time you make me laugh not giving her the best blooms 😂 have a nice evening.
👋 beautiful. Do you have the pilgrim? Or James Galway? Im looking for a shade tolerant rose thats a large climber and continuously blooms 😊 any suggestions? I just started my journey with david austin roses this year.. while i do love them.. my wallet does not. The more i observe other youtubers i see.. disease.. thin floppy branches.. etc.. i see youre expanding to kordes, meiland, and others.. any recommendations from those? Thanks.. aton!😊
Hi Ann, yes I have both pilgrim and James Galway. Pilgrim unfortunately hasn’t performed well for me, not its fault of course. It’s in a very tight spot competing with other plants. James Galway has been In My garden just over a year in a shaded spot. His blooms are unique and beautiful but shatters too quickly and same goes for Generous gardener. I would say strawberry Hill might be you best choice as she performs well in the shade and has an amazing scent. Great to see another rose enthusiast, it’s such an addictive passion. I’ve always love Da roses from day one. The beauty of David Austin and fragrance is unmatched . Only downside to da roses is that they can be difficult to keep healthy and the flowers don’t last very long, hence i have been looking at other breeders such as kordes , Meiland ect…. Although Meiland flowers aren’t as pretty as DA or others, but for me they have stood out the most, the fragrance is the best and blooms last longer than all other breeders. So my advice to you Ann would be to start with a few David Austin as they are one of the most expensive but also consider other roses the other breeders, don’t make the mistake I made when I first started. Good luck
@kenvoong5977 Thankyou much for a quick and thorough response😊 Gertrude jekyll was the first one I bought this year and she is in a huge pot with maybe 6 hours of sun a day ATM, she was doing really good but has been taking a break for awhile now as it was really hot, she was definitely growing in the process though, i hope she blooms alittle more in the years to come.. I have her, Scepter'd Isle, Princess Alexandra, and an Eden climber. I love all sorts of plants! But roses have different spots in my heart nowadays ❤️ I hope to have a beautiful collection one day. I didn't know one person could watch as many videos on RU-vid about roses.. Thanks again, love your videos :) 🧡
@annbrodzinski5707 yes watching RU-vid makes matters worse. I have princess Alexandra( my favourite), sceptre and climbing Eden all are fantastic roses. Eden is bred by Meiland, her blooms are one of the most beautiful and long lasting.
Its great to see you dear Ken!😊 Your voice is very pleasant. And thank you for the great video of my favourite David Austin ❤ Greetings from Russia. Take care😊
Love your videos, you have a lovely calming voice and I much prefer to hear just you speaking and the backdrop of nature than the music in the background. It might just be my adhd but I find it hard to focus on what you're saying with the music playing 😂
Thanks for the video, Ken. You don't takl too much, love your comments, and to see what you think about roses, how are they performing in your garden. Where did you manage to get 'Distant Drums' here in the UK ?
@@florinabutcovan6427 Hi Florina, yes distant drums is available in uk for the first time. It’s a fairly new rose and can’t really comment on its performance so far other than it has a strong Myrrh scent.
@@florinabutcovan6427 jonestherose.co.uk. They are out of stock at the moment, you may need to wait until till autumn. They’re the only company which sells this variety.
Another lovely video of your garden and house Ken. The Orchids look amazing - such vibrant colours. We have one Orchid that looks like your pink/purple one. My wife looks after it and it's been with us for a few years now. It's flowering at the moment and when it's finished perhaps we won't prune the stem back too hard this time. The roses still look amazing to me and I love looking at them. Oh dear! The poor Lemon Tree. Accidents do happen sadly. Cheers! P.
@@peterhaymaker7562 Thank you Peter, it was my pleasure to feature something different other than roses. Yes try not to prune your orchids right down. Sometimes you can even tease it to give you another stem by removing the white protective film on the bud. Lucky for you I’m responsible for the care of my roses and orchids, and not to mention most of the house chores 🥲
Your Orchids are beautiful Ken. For some reason, I can't seem to grow them. My brother and his wife are big fans of Orchids and have several and they gave me another one to try but that's now on its last legs. I think I kill them with kindness! Your house is lovely Ken and you have wonderful views of your roses. I was at the garden centre this morning and almost bought Bring Me Sunshine and Elizabeth but I resisted as I really don't have the room in my garden. I'll be ripping out the summer bedding soon as some of it is looking tired but the gaps they leave won't be big enough for a rose. Toying with the idea of creating a new border next year but that'll mean extra work and you know yourself how much time our beloved roses take up. We're constantly deadheading, feeding and sweeping up the petals. Thanks for the garden tour. You still have plenty of colour which is what us gardeners like to see. Take care.
Hi Wendy, what a lovely phrase you use” kill with kindness “ I’ve killed many in the past and replace whatever i killed. Orchids are more delicate and needs even more care. I remember back in the days when I had over 30 orchids. whenever I water them, my bath tubs was filled with orchids. Having a passion for roses gives us great pleasure, but they can be expensive when you start buying fertilisers and spend numerous hours deadheading. I think you’re as crazy as me🤪 I just remembered you went and bought 4 roses only couple weeks ago.
Yay a nose around your house :) We never seem to have much luck with orchids in the house. Lovely flowers though and lovely home you have Ken. St Ethelburga in my garden is doing well Ken. If you have the patience it’s a great repeater and flower. This year mine is growing very well. Lovely video again and best of luck mate.
@@Jay_Jay Thank Jay, I just had to show off my orchids as they have been amazing. Lin and myself have place an order for 20 plus roses from Netherlands for next season. We’re both looking for more unique and rarer varieties not available in uk .st ethulburga is a really fragrant rose, perhaps I may wait a little longer for her to develop.
Morning Ken. Sorry I’ve not been around on my channel for sometime I have a whole load of videos to catch up on. Your maid Marion looks lovely. Great video Ken . Your Gertrude’s doing very well this year :)
@@Jay_Jay Hi Jay, I did mentioned to my sis that you’ve been so quiet lately. I guess you and Donna must be travelling in your camper van 🚐 and enjoying life. We just do what we have to do Jay.
I remembered how your garden was like when I first subscribed to your channel. What a dramatic improvement ! I love all the plants in your garden not just the roses ! Keep the videos coming. Maybe you can talk a bit more about your other plants alongside the roses next time ?
@@Carmen-sg1hr Hi carmen, I wish I had the space and know how to talk about other plants other than roses. Often I’m so dedicated to roses, i forget about other flowers 🌺. I use to have lots of dahlias but find them too much work having to dig them up and store them over winter
@@DollyPistola Thank you, yeah I’m feel like that myself. Those orchids have been amazing and deserves a mention when not much is flowering in the garden
You are such a pessimist Ken! It's not late in the season at all - I was posting videos of roses in November last year (and some covered in ice crystals in December)! OK, our (not so) glorious summer seems to be on its way out, but roses are pretty hardy plants - I'm sure you will get to see those Emily Bronte blooms fully open and probably many more too! I would be more hopeful about the lemon tree as well - maybe it's just the leaves that are going to drop off? My wife always accuses me of being a pessimistic glass half-empty person while she is an optimistic glass half full person - you seem to be a the glass has cracked and the contents are emptying out person! Anyway, I love the way you can enjoy your garden from inside the house, and the garden is looking very neat, tidy and colourful. That James L. Austin seems to be glowing with colour, and a lot of your other roses are putting on a great show. A couple of questions - Gardener Ben says Bring Me Sunshine needs to be grown on a support - do you agree? Also I remember you have a Meteor in your front garden - mine is in its first summer and I think the flowers are an ugly mess in shape and colour - I assume yours looks better? I am wondering whether to dump it and make space for something I appreciate more, but thought maybe it's just been a bad year for it and it may improve? See? - that's me being optimistic! Now, sing along with me, first of all that Monty Python song - "Always look on the bright side of life ..." followed by Morecombe and Wise's "Bring me sunshine ..."
@@nikkonch 😂🤗😃😂 you sure do make me laugh 😆 Nik. I’m cheerful already. I think it’s because your garden looks so much greener and colourful to my dull and dying. Perhaps you are right, I do feel half empty and broken 😞 I could really do with some positive energy. I had chap asking me to compare James Austin versus Gabriel. I know you have Gabriel in your garden Nik and praise it. My answer would be James L Austin as my choice and not by much. Meteor have impressed me a lot, the colour is very mish mash. I prefer it to many of my roses for its unique colour and lasting blooms. I have 2 BMS, one in the pot which doesn’t need support and the one grown in the ground happily supports itself. from experience, two same rose can behave differently even though 1 is at front and other at the back . I think you should refer this question to Gavin because his BMS is more established. In the meantime I was keep singing 🎵😀Always look on the bright side of life “…….,..ah that’s better😀
@@kenvoong5977 I placed 1 support right in the middle of BMS and tied some of the stems to this. The sheer number of flowers (100) obviously weigh down on some stems so support is a good idea. I find these Green Supports (with steel inside the plastic? ) at Garden Centres well worth buying. Pack of 6 for around £8 ?
Ken, your orchids are beautiful and amazing blooms lasting over two years. I have just one orchid plant similar to first one in your video. What is your experience of J L Austin rose, a good repeat bloomer, compared with Gabriel Oak? Thanks for sharing beautiful orchids and your lovely house.
@@Raj-45a Hi Raj, very difficult to pick one over the other. Both are great at repeat flowering and very similar in colour. But if I had to choose 1 , it would be James L Austin. Because Jame Austin has more upright growth and less prone to disease. Gabriel tends to produce oddly canes which bends and little floppy. I’d have both if you’ve got the space 😝
@@kenvoong5977 Ken thanks for your helpful advice. I have Gabriel O and now wish to add J L Austin too. I will have to find space in the garden. Also, I also find kordes roses ( only have 3) have long break times between each flush, so not very impressed.
@@Raj-45a yes kordes tends to rebloom much slower than da. All my da roses have finished their second and third flush. Fingers crossed winter doesn’t set in too quickly or second flush kordes will be dismal. I’ve only had a couple previous years. What impressed me most this year are Meiland roses. They’re long lasting blooms and scent is unmatched
Ken your orchids are amazing. I had one that flowered on and off for over a year but I'd pruned it to the base. Completely the wrong place to prune obviously but it did come back haha. I had a little giggle at your commentary on the tile cleaner 😅. It's not funny at all really, but how you just came out and said it so calmly was quite amusing especially when you elaborated on the words "tile cleaner!" Omg I'd have definitely had the divorce papers ready haha. I hope it recovers next year with new leaves ken.
@@davenadainton4209 Hi Davena, yes those orchids are no doubt amazing in many way. I never prune them right to the bottom in case there side shoots. Sometimes by removing the white film where the buds are can also tease it to sprout a new stem. Yeah I’d used an empty bottle and filled it with tile cleaner which I marked with permanent marker. I suppose not entirely her fault. Dead lemon tree isn’t a bad thing of course because I wouldn’t have to bring it indoors over winter 🥶 that said I’d still be gutted if it did die 💀
@@travellerseko yes I have two bushes which I bought back in spring. Can’t really tell you much about them as they haven’t grown much. I’ve heard there is fragrant, for me I’m only detecting a light fragrant. Although their blooms are pretty small , they do last quite along time With an abundance pretty pinkish flowers.
I have a Blush Noisette in a 50 litre pot just outside our patio door, and am enjoying looking at it at this very moment. Although it's meant to be a climber, mine hasn't shown much inclination to climb very strongly over the past two years, but I am cutting it back when it does! So I am left with a small bush 30 inches tall by 30 wide which gets covered with flowers when it flushes, but with the weather this year it hasn't been flushing that often. It does, for me, have a pleasant strong fragrance.
Hi Ken, your orchids are beautiful ! They must be very happy blooming for such a long time, how wonderful. Thank you for showing us your beloved orchids and your home I love how your garden and your home all work so well together. Your pergola is a great addition. Your roses are looking so colourful and I bet the scent is fabulous. I'm so happy Penelope Lively is behaving a bit better for you, the pruning obviously did the trick. Thanks for the tour, take care.
@@soulgirlktf Oh thanks Linda, you and I have been so quiet lately. Finding anything of interest is so difficult as we’re nearing the end of our rose season. Yes giving Penelope a harder prune has made a big difference, some of her canes are now more sturdy. Perhaps me and you could squeeze a couple more videos before the season ends.
@@gavinparry5426 Thank Gavin, there’s really not much to show in the garden as you know, and I’m sure most people are probably fed up seeing crappy half dead roses. The orchids are the only plants with most beautiful flowers right now.
@@teslaandhumanity7383 yes WOH really smells amazing. I had no idea the scent was that good as no one has ever mentioned of the fragrance. I just happened to smell this rose on my visit to Da head quarters.
@@teslaandhumanity7383 lol 😅 roughly 110 I think. I often lost count and another 15 to come for next year. Yes roses are probably the most addictive plants in this entire world. I don’t blame you. The only reason to stop adding more was due to lack of space and time to care for them. We only live once , why not do what we enjoy most.😇
As always beautiful roses in a lovely garden, Ken. I have several equally best performering roses this yr, Eustacia vye, Princess Anne rose, desdemona, Roahl Dahl, Olivia, Princess Charlene de Monaco, julia child and timeless purple rose. I believe princess Ann rose is better bet than Emma Bridgewater, at least for me. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful video.
Hi Raj, yes eustacia is definitely amongst the best performers in My garden also. Hard to capture them all blooming at the same time. I’m still jealous you have a living princess de Monaco. My sis and I are ordering some roses not available in this country and this time I’m going to give princess de Monaco another try.
Another very interesting video Ken. How old is your Blush Noisette? My two have grown into tall and wide rose bushes, maybe up to 8 feet X 8 feet. Will yours have enough room to reach that sort of potential? Mine haven't stopped flowering this year - they're brilliant. I have both the Verbenas you have too. I love them. The Rigida will self seed as will the Bonariensis; I have them both and totally agree with your comments about the Rigida. It also sends out rhizomes so will spread which the Bonariensis won't; It just gets stronger. Your roses are magnificent and I would love some of them in my garden but I don't know where I'd put them. Something else would have to go. I really enjoyed the trip around your lovely garden and look forward to the next one. Cheers! P.
Hi Peter i bought two blush noisette only two months ago after seeing yours. They’re planted around the base of the tree. I’m hoping they should ramble together up the tree eventually. I’ve yet to see much much progress so far. As small as those bloom maybe, I’m quite suprise how long they last. Your garden looks fantastic as it is Peter, adding more rose would ruined the cottage like garden . Mines already ruined and with more roses on its way next year, there no turning back. I only buy plants to dress up my roses and have experimented with many in the past. Finding the Rigida as a companion is perfect.
Ken, your garden looks wonderful. Far better than mine and I spend at least four hours every single day in it. I've just been out to water and noticed all the jobs that still need doing so I can understand how hard it is for you when you are working long hours. I went to David Austin's place when we were on holiday a couple of weeks ago and I came back with four new roses making more work for myself! I had to laugh today as the lady who served me in a shop asked if I have a gardening business as I buy a lot of plants! I had to tell her that I just like gardening. Thanks for the tour Ken.
Hello Wendy, yes certainly keeping everything immaculate isn’t easy with my working lifestyle. You’re too modest Wendy, I’m sure your garden looks far more impressive than mine. With many roses in the way next year, I’m really taking on more than I’m capable of. Every rose added will mean extra work 😢. I’m sure it’s the first time you visited the head quarters, what 4 roses did you buy?
@@kenvoong5977 Hi Ken, I bought Harlow Carr, Emily Bronte which smells amazing, Tottering by Gently and Ancient Mariner. I'd been wanting to go to David Austin's place for such a long time but nobody wanted to go with me saying it was too far for a day trip. When we were on holiday we were close by so no excuses! It still looked lovely even though the roses were past their best and we had the place almost to ourselves. I was surprised that there was so much deadheading that needed doing but perhaps with it being so late in the rose season the staff had more pressing jobs to do. Take care Ken and don't work too hard!
Thanks for posting after your period of dormancy Ken. Roses are really time-consuming - I can spend about an hour just doing basic tasks like dead-heading and removing old foliage, and the next day it all needs doing again. I'm beginning to think that I should give Olivia a spot in my garden, and Bring Me Sunshine seems to get positive comments too. Can you tell me what you like about BMS? I agree with your recommendations of Gertrude, Gabriel, Princess Anne and Lady of Shalott. I'd forgotten about Yves Piaget - I think you were praising it in a previous video. Ignore your sister's nit-picking old-fashioned attitude to words - we gardeners are free spirits, poetic souls who need to express ourselves using language in new ways with new words - we are proud to love the sniffidacious pinkitude of Gertrude and the glowsome whiteliness of Desdemona!
Well said Nik!! We are not professionals when it comes to gardening. Isn’t easy finding the right terminologies to express ourselves . I would assume many people think I don’t have a clue which maybe party be true. We are free souls and won’t worry about what others think. Youre rose all look fantastic Nik. I’ve been reluctant to show mine as they have not been given much TLC this year. With more roses to come next year, I just may have bitten off more than I can chew. BMS really is everything a rose should be, fragrance health and vigorous and I’m sure it’s Gav’s favourite rose in his garden .
