Haha, I substituted yesterday at a middle school and a student asked me for a pencil. I promptly handed him one I had just picked up off the floor. It seemed there were at least a few pencils on the floor after every class. Middle school students crack me up when their antics!
When you said “if you’re an elementary school teacher and you’re like I can’t do this anymore, or need a little switch up, try middle school” I felt that 😅🤍
Very great video. Love your passion and enthusiasm. I am a principal at a high school and yea I can tell that I have the least number of teachers comparing to previous years. Wish I can have some teachers like you in my school; maybe come and spend a vacation here on an island in Micronesia. I hope someone can read this and at least to think about it. I am recruiting for teachers now; Science, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Mechanic, Carpentry, Agriculture, Food & Nutrition, Sewing, Child Development.
If you don’t mind me asking, what was your major and concentration in college? I’m trying to choose right now and it’s soooo hard. Your combination of 6th grade ELA and Science is ideal but idk what to major in for that!!!
So I actually majored in early childhood ed and was only certified through 2nd grade! I took a praxis test to add on 3-6. I got hired as an ELA teacher for 6th grade, but this year they need more science teachers so I said I’d do both!
I teach 6th grade science and it’s so hard to find content creators who do the same! I also teach leadership so I know what it’s like to have a multi purpose room 😂 love your classroom setup, especially the “talk like a scientist” poster!!
I’m studying for driving school and I’m really excited I’m getting my dream car and still work and I’m going to college again after next year and I’m really excited to take teaching education and I’m really excited to still work and teach 10 grade ☺️😘❤️🫶🏻
What do you use the Lucky Ducks for? Thank you. Your room looks great!! Love all the lights. I teach 5th grade and it's hard to find upper elementary youtube channels fpr ELA and Science. Alicia from CT
Your room looks awesome!! You can add your name at the top of the bulletin board behind your desk and have that be your board to display any quick at a glance info. So glad you decided to use the bins for group supplies/ projects. 😊
Can you please show your Science alphabet? I'm a first year teacher and I will be teaching 6th grade Math and Science. I'm nervous, I'm not sure where to start. 😅
not sure if you already do this but if you cover the entire surface of chalkboard paint with chalk and wipe it away it will be easier to clean in the future.
I love your classroom! It’s so much bigger than last year’s room. That’s awesome. For the curtain that blocks the storage room, maybe you can fold it in half and put a quick hem so it stays. The curtain won’t be that sheet anymore
for those plastic containers that you don’t know what to do, you could treat it like a caddy and fill it with supplies at the tables, or if there’s any group work you could put them out then with the supplies they would need
Could you please explain what First Chapter Friday is. Also what are some Novels you do? Did the school supply the class set or did you purchase them? Looking to get some for my classroom. Thank you. Alicia from CT
So for first chapter Friday last year I kind of just picked a book randomly (different genres, difficulty levels, authors, style of writing) and read only the first chapter to the class! It gets them exposed to new books and some get so hooked after the first chapter they check it out and read the whole thing. The inheritance games was a really good FCF. All the class sets of novels in my room are provided by the school which I’m very lucky to have! For our whole class novels this past year we did Freak the Mighty and Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie (I cried reading this one) some of the book club books were Because of Mr. Terupt, Wonder, El Deafo, Stargirl, Loser and I can’t remember the rest!
I love the way she does FCF! I teach HS ELA and I do FCF but I let the students pick out a book and read the first chapter; they have a sheet they fill out with a collection of questions. They can choose this in lieu of taking the Friday quiz. ❤
Love the way your room is coming together!! If you don’t want to see what’s underneath the black table add fabric with Velcro on three side of the table or even hot glue!!
I don’t as of right now!! Last year I kind of just picked randomly and then left the book at the front of the room, but I would love to have a display like how elementary teachers do a “books we’ve read display”
Hi Jess! Great vlog, it was nice to see your classroom set up videos pop up on my notifications. Just some ideas - what if you take the placemat thats on the bottom shelf of white tall shelving unit and hot glue ut or tape it to that spot on thr back of your standing desk. Also the black table that's in the middle of your 2 black shelving units - if you're not sure what to use it for it can be a Science Store - and you can place any supplies each table of students will need for hands on experiments or any materials...the bins youre not sure if you want to keep can be used for ELA units or for ELA activities like book "tastings" or items for group projects, they can also be used as seasonal bins to store seasonal decor. Just wanted to share. Take care and thanks for sharing your process with us. P.S The plant looks really nice around the computer unit thhata on the floor.
@recesswithjess6th you're welcome! 😊 I teach K-5 Art and I have shelving unit that I refer to as the Art Store and all of my students know to go there for specific supplies or supplies specific to any given project - I got the idea from another art teacher. 🙂 You could even call it the Science Lab instead of store. Can't wait to see your next set-up vlog
Hi, this will be my first year teaching! I have never seen the hot glue gun trick for hanging things on the wall. Will it pull the paint off when I go to take it down at the end of the year? I assume not, but just wanted to confirm before I started hot gluing things! Also, I have never seen the matte spray paint trick. Thanks for sharing!
