Mike's Retro Trading Cards is a channel by 3 friends who all met at the local card shop in the 1990's! Mike "...from Mike's Retro Trading Cards" owned a card shop called Mike's Upper Deck from 1991-2004 and has recently gotten back into the hobby and has been going through his leftover shop inventory. Joe was a customer at Mike's shop from the age of 12 and is our resident expert on Marvel cards, as well as a Tom Brady rookie card collector! EP started coming into the shop as a teenager with his dad in the early 90's and quickly became a regular. He still has a lot of his cards from that time and is excited to share them on the channel! We have all renewed our love for the hobby, especially "retro" cards from the 1990's and early 2000's. If you share a love of all things retro and enjoy the collecting side of the hobby more than investing please subscribe and join us!
I am really glad the AI didn’t say something about Star Trek when Mike asked about this channel because I don’t think he would have been able to handle it.
Downtowns have not been rare for years. There's a reason I sold my Mahomes about a year ago. I realized how many there were vs the price and capitalized. I bet I will be able to rebuy at 1/3 the price. Been saying since 2021 that Downtowns and Mosaic Genesis are way overpriced.
yep, cause they are easy to mask the print run. They were popular the last few years for sure but something happened in the last few months...every video I would watch of a card show vlog people were killing each other to try to buy downtowns and kabooms.
Yeah I agree with EP on the downtown situation. Breakers often open products by the case (especially FOTL) so they’re more likely to end up seeing something like this in the hobby.
I'm conducting a 72-hour audit of Mike's Retro Trading Cards transcripts to determine how many curse words and Seinfeld references have been made before I call the FBI on Joe Day.
I had like 10 curse words and some of those don't even count...and 1 Seinfeld reference...pretty low stakes stuff to call the FBI about. That actually reminds me of the episode where Jerry was going to get free cable from the Russian guys and he had a dream it was a sting operation and the FBI killed him for it!
Just enjoying EP video at 9 am when sirens blast outside. I ran to front window i’m in large apartment complex. Police,Ems,Fire and rescue. The went in and out untill finally the Allegheny county corner arrived i knew what that ment. Really old dude just moved in last month had passed. You never know what you going to get in EP’s Extra innings. 😮
Yikes! I thought you were gonna say "I thought there was monster truck racing going on outside" because of the background noise a couple points on this video haha
Congrats on the grades! Are you putting together a graded 89 Score set? Or just grading the important cards? Are you trying to get a certain grade for the graded cards?
Yeah I am putting the 89 set together. I was planning on getting a graded Sanders. Probably a 9. I just graded the Thomas because it's beautiful. So disappointed it was only an 8.
You really made out well. So glad you had fun and hopefully are feeling better soon. Love the packs and the Spiderman card. Thanks for sharing, hope you have a great weekend.
Everyone boo Mike for slighting 90s Stadium Club (boooo, hissssss) Now that we got that out of the way, EP, you picked the wrong Never Compromise set. 1997 is infinitely better. Better design, some neat texturing and foil. And a mis-mash of absolutely fantastic photos (Steve Young, Slash, Emmitt, Deion running a route, and DT sacking Elway) combined with meme-worthy rookie photography. From Pat Barns looking like he's teaching Kevin Lockett swahili, to Kevin Lockett looking like someone is calling him about his car insurance on the sideline, to Warrick Dunn looking like someone gave their helmet to a kid, to Kenny Holmes looking like the waiter gave him extra spicy wings instead of medium, to an epic ass shot of Darrell Russell. It is fantasticly 90s.
Love listening to you guys even if you are not just into baseball cards. When sellers throw like football or basketball cards in with my purchases I confess they are tossed into the trash.
I think it's more fair to say we aren't as much into MODERN baseball cards. Joe has never been much of a baseball fan but both EP and I have always collected baseball cards. I still like to open some new baseball here and there but my heart is with the 70's through 2010 ish cards. Ask me how many 1987 Topps Terry Puhl's I have sometime lol
I fall asleep when people even say the word baseball...that said I pull autos out of every topps big league pack I ever opened! Thanks for watching lol
Parking got better throughout the weekend thanks to the airport. They made them stop charging for parking because traffic was making people miss their flights. VIP pickup was a breeze Thursday morning. My buddy did not have fun waiting in line outside everyday. I waited for him inside😂 I kept getting turned around in the big room. I believe it’s because all of the corporate stuff was stuffed in the back so the floor didn’t have many markers, just a huge room with the same looking tables. Brought my own food, water, and beer. Had a cooler in the car which made for a nice midday fresh air break. Bathrooms lines weren’t too crazy after Thursday and were relatively clean comparatively. Wore jeans comfortably except in the corners of the room. Nothing like last year. Internet wasn’t great, but if you were persistent it got there. I didn’t utilize my vip perks enough, but walking right in was worth every penny. Can’t wait for next year!!!
Bummed I missed you boys in Cleveland. I would’ve felt horrible if I shared the Covid I scooped up, however. My wife is thrilled. Can’t wait to hear about it every time I leave for the National for the rest of my life🙃
Ladies & gentlemen, here’s yet another example of how the card industry could benefit from emulating the world of Star Trek… true, every year in Vegas there’s a huge Trek convention, however they also go from city to city - so why doesn’t the National become a traveling show?? Like a 20 city convention tour over 52 weeks, from coast to coast?? Bring the Natty to the people - it’s only logical 🖖🏼
I would have to give it a 5 as well based on the same factors/my experience: - Parking/getting into location: 2 (a lot of the issues with flow into the show stemmed from with the lack of enough parking staff) - Admissions: 6 (I got in and out relatively quickly (15 minutes or less) but it just wasn't intuitive and could be done faster with more staff) - Show layout: 7 (relatively intuitive, no real complaints) - Food: N/A - Prices: 8 (obviously there are some ridiculous sticker prices on the floor but there's wiggle room or better prices from other dealers) - Bathrooms: 4 (I got in and out relatively quickly but I think I just got lucky) - A/C: 8 (I wore pants on Thursday and I had no complaints even though I usually run pretty warm) - Internet: 2 (struggled a while to get signal to pull up ticket QR code and to pull up PayPal) - Seating: 3 (obviously not enough but the chairs against the wall were great for a little breather) - VIP: N/A
wait, you had to wait in a line to get your vip ticket? the MN card show VIP passes you get it emailed right to you and print it off to hand to the person when you get there and in you go. seems the National could figure out something with this technology we have of email / printers ...
Yeah we were all boxed into a long narrow room like cattle being led to slaughter. About an hour and 10 minutes in line in a room that was hot and stuffy because of al the people. They only had maybe 10 or so people working in the room handing out the passes and the gift bags.
