Nice video. Interesting what these people did during their career. Interesting how the industry worked at that time. ( Remarkable, at this writing, Wink Martindale is 90 yo, wish him well)
Wow - -didn't expect to hear Roger Ailes' name on this! 1:07:55 - I wonder if the Cincinnati talk show was Bob Braun - -I watched it in Columbus in the early 80s
Shipwreck has always been a favorite action figure of mine. I used to have naval battles involving him & the rest of the joes in the pool as a child. A pleasure to finally meet you sir after 35+ years!
I don't believe they covered "Break the Bank" from its short run on ABC in 1976. Tom went hosting Split Second to the revival of You Don't Say and then a year later "Break the Bank." This was from the production company Jack Barry/Dan Enright.
I actually got chills hearing him do Shippy's voice. I don't think the people who were involved with GIJoe at the time ever had any idea how the kids that grew up with it would carry it forever in their hearts as adults. I'm 50 years old, and I still love GIJoe. Thank you, sir, for making my childhood brighter.
Sir your work along with the other voice actors are legendary. Thank you for the memoriable moments of my childhood. I was in elementary school in 1984 6th grade l would get out of school go to store for Cheetos and football gum go home be set for 3o clock line up inspector gadget, porky pig and Voltron 😂😂😂😂. Awww the childhood memories. It was a wonderful time to be alive at that time. It's good to see you living and good shape. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the childhood memories and nastalgia.
Shipwreck was the most realistic character because he was the only one trying to get in the guts of the female Joes…if there were only ten chicks around, I’d be trying to bang the chicks too
Shipwreck is a bit of a**hole, but I was in the Navy so of course he became one of my favorites. He was the only true Navy Man on the Team. Yeah, there were a couple of Divers; Torpedo and Deep Six, but they didn't fight on land. I am now collecting Action Figures, to later give my Grandson, I have Shipwreck, I passed on Torpedo and Diver. I mean, Torpedo isn't even a SEAL!
Watched the interview for the first time today. Sad to see that Tom passed 4 years later. At 60, I remember him as a young guy living in Toronto as the host of so many game shows that came and went. what a legacy he leaves behind and what a fine, intelligent man he was.
It's only pretty recently that I realized he was in many Star Trek episodes, TNG and DS9. He was the Pakled that kidnapped Geordi to make his ship go. He was in "Roadhouse" too.
Voice actors are amazing. This is why I wish movie studios would hire ACTUAL voice actors for the big budget animated films instead of "A list" actors.
Here is my experience as a kid in the 80s and 90s. I knew a navy guy that looked like Shipwreck in my neighborhood in Chicago. He was a Puerto Rican dude named Hector Sandoval and spoke like that too 😂 So Hector Delgado was an imitation of a real navy Puerto Rican Chicagoan 😅
I remember watching GIJoe on the living room couch one day, my mom was reading a magazine or something, anyway Shipwreck speaks and my mom laughs and goes "Is that supposed to be Jack Nicholson or something?" First time I ever heard of the great Jack Nicholson.
I always enjoyed Shipwreck moments in the series. It was just something different and out there and wacky. Even when they used him in later seasons when his character wasn't as prominent it was always memorable. And he was in just such extreme moments. Dealing with a gigantic sized Polly, on an island of morphed creatures and being chosen to be commander of the team. I mean he was always in the center of something fun when his character showed up. Even some of the Knowing is Half the Battle PSA's with Shipwreck are some of the best and more memorable ones.
Bless this man, I had the pleasure to meeting him a few weeks ago. I was the last person in line and we chatted for a while. I had told him what an inspiration he was and the roles he did, how I was just barely into the voice acting world and what I had accomplished, he was impressed though I didn't get to go professional which bummed him out. He said that voice acting today, isn't like how it was nearly 40 years ago, but to keep trying if I wanted it. I really feel like we don't have much time left with this wonderful person and when that day comes I will be incredibly sad, but I can look back at this meeting and go, "Dude was amazing."
I wasn't much of a fan of Shipwreck as a kid, but when I rewatched them as an older fan, I really appreciated him a lot more. And I really need to get around to watching the Last Detail.
Bob, I have seen thousands of youtube videos but I watched every minute and it was great. Appreciate the way you talk respectfully of Hope (uh, he wasn't perfect as no one is) I respected the way he got NBC to pay him by buying some of his many plots of real estate he had purchaded many years earlier and I think this helped him avoid some taxes legally.
This is great. Look up the Dean Martin Roast for Frank Sinatra and find the Jonathan Winters bit (he said he drove the Dorsey band bus with Frank). It is so funny I was thinking did Mr. Winters write this or did some writers?
I like meeting voice actors from my childhood not only because it's a huge geek-out moment for me, but so I can let them know what monumentally important part of my childhood they have been. How their voice made that character so real and meaningful. And I get a chance to say thank you to them, shake their hand and get an autograph...dream come true moment.
I always knew Tom and his brother were from here in Louisville but I had never heard the whole especially story straight from his mouth. What a wonder man he seems to have lived a great and long life. R.I.P Tom!
bill cullen of all the game show guys other than perhaps alex trabek is my favoite. he genuinely looks happy when contestants get big money, feels bad when they screw up and it costs them a game, and always looked like he was having a blast. i don't remember him that well outside of buzzer reruns but love him. never afraid to make fun of himself. most game show hosts were trying to get themselves over constantly. (ie gene rayburn and bowser) he got himself over by being funny, classy, not over the top, and looking like every emotion and comment he made was genuine. alex trabek did a good job of this also. any time a game show host that mainly deals with useless trivia/info makes comments about well i didn't know that, or well u learn a lot hosting a game show, etc. deserves ones respect. alex did that often, and it surprised me when he would at first because i'm sitting their thinking, "why admit to that on air?" comment about it on a commercial break or what ever. he did it on air and as far as i could tell always made the episode because, a. it showed humility, and b it showed he was a genuine person.. i don't remember bill doing that, but that's not to say he didn't, or wouldn't have, just that i didn't see him do it.
