Excellent advice. I fully agree, except for the point about underusing colours. You can perfectly steer the user's attention by using only contrast. If you are interested in that concept I stole from photography, search for compositional weight and designindata. It's going to speed up perception and you will get some complaints about not using colours at all (to verify the dunning-kruger-effect has a lot of gravity in the world of visual design).
